    I had to come by and comment on this. We have lived in this house two years and we inherited hard water stains in all three bathroom toilet bowls. I have tried just about every cleaner out there and nothing worked to remove them. Anyway, I tried your method and it worked great! It didn’t scratch like a pumice stone. You can have the cleanest bathroom on the planet but those nasty rings make everything look bad. I am so happy to be rid of those! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Drywall screens are sandpaper, made for sanding drywall joints. It will remove the stains but will scratch the ceramic. The scratches will then hold more dirt down the road.

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 Před 11 měsíci +2

      Yes, "Vitreous China" is soft. Ceramic is ground colored glass applied to heated metal, from signs to bathtubs. Toilets are a mixture of clay pressed into a mold in multiple parts. Air dried for hours & days. Assembled then smooth with paddles and bent tools, then heated to a somewhat low temp compared to metal. Larger scratches are removed by finer sandpaper which can be wet & dry. 6,000 grit scratches are polished. This is done dry so with the water shut off, the tank & bowl are empty. They sell buffing / polishing compound and 2" wool or foam buffing pads. Harbor freight is one seller but an automotive paint store has good stuff.
      Any contamination sticks to imperfections on the surface. This is the purpose of "Nano-ceramic" coating for automotive paints and clear coats. You have to switch your thinking as to the root cause to repeat cleaning. A $350 toilet from Lowes, Home Depot or Menards is super smooth. But either an acidic liquids or alkaline liquids attack the surface over time, you have microscopic pitting. This is the imperfections stuff sticks too!

    Thanks for video. Another thing you might want to try is turn water off, get a turkey baster to remove all water (when have stains at bottom, then put 1 inch of CLR. Put little pieces of toilet paper around stain ring soaked with CLR. Let sit for about 15 minutes. I’ve found that the CLR makes removing hard water stains much easier. Can then take toilet brush and scrub but won’t be as much work. Anything left over you can do lightly with your drywall screen or I use pumice stone. It hasn’t scratched porcelain for me.

    To make this chore easier: Fill a bucket with plain water, and dump it into the bowl to displace the water - some will remain but the fill line will be BELOW where it normally stops (where the stains are the worst) This will help the scouring powder adhere better while you scrub.
    You can also soak up excess water with an old rag and wring it into the empty bucket to get stains in the bottom of the bowl.

    A thought people - when you any abrasive on porcelain or anything like this - you will leave scratches (you can't see) that will allow more dirt/stains in. This will work - but temporary - that will be back in a couple of weeks or month - but worse and harder to get out. Think of a cavity in dentistry.

    100 grain/grit sandpaper does the trick and makes it real smooth. It also works underneath the rim to remove the rust stains also the inner edge pf the toilet seat. You need to lower the water in the bowl first, just turn the water off and flush it then plunge a few times until the water is at least an inch below the dirty ring line. Then just sand away for a few minutes and that's it.

    As other posts, missing the last step.
    Once you complete the cleanup, lower the water level and let it dry. One it’s dry apply WD40. This will prevent the buildup from coming back quickly.
    I have used this method and apply WD40 after every regular cleaning and the ring has been evicted.
    PS. On regular cleaning I use the toilet brush to lower the water level and only use a small spray after it’s dry.

    Your water must be only slightly hard compared to my water at Lake Hartwell, GA. I have not tried the drywall screen, which may very well be less abrasive than the pumice stone, but our stains always return in approximately 2 weeks, or less. I have always thought the pumice stone was to abrasive and just contributes to the stain problem. I will try your method when I replace both toilets.

    Sorry, but drywall screen will definitely scratch the finish; it's made of silicon carbide. If it didn't scratch, it wouldn't scratch off the ring. Yes, the stain will be scratched off, but it will leave pits in the porcelain which will refill more easily in the future. I've seen the microscopic evidence.

    I just cleaned the hard water stains from my toilet with Lysol Power Plus toilet bowl cleaner (grey bottle). I was shocked at how well it worked.

    Turn off the water supply to the toilet, flush it and then start cleaning the ring. You won't be touching the gross water.

    Toilets aren't gross. Poo coming out of peoples butts is gross. And yet, it's only natural. Who taught us to be grossed out by our body
