Roger Brown's works are great, i love his art and Chicago imagists group, they created something unique in visual art, it's always a special experience for all who love paintings
The small works by Cecile Brown look like they may be studies for her larger works, working out colours and patterns. I have followed her career since she made it big in the United States, love her work. I agreed with your comment that it is brave of her to reveal these almost brainstorming works. Chris

for good or ill Sylvester's Brutality of Fact Interviews with Francis Bacon was my first intense intellectual/material/artistic/conversational/emotional obsession; and then his work with Giacometti brought me into that milieu, the studio/café/streets of Paris/existentialist (not to label either the critic or the artist, just a handy handle). Thanks for helping continue my education into the new century

I think it was Matisse who said it's not about thick or thin but Brown's work seen up close its thinness impresses me, I had thought that these were thick paintings; she has a very deft brush
I think Cecily has made the right decision to abandon all the stuff about the female body in a photographic state of catastrophe and instead concentrate on using that experience to advance pictorial research in the form of some very good paintings( and some more 'yet to be concluded' ones) that aim at absolute representation of chance chiming with facility and fecundity... The ultimate chancer's pictorial adventure... :-)... A bit like Tom and Jerry and one of them gets out a paintbrush and has absolute facility in immediate magical resoltuion of form, pastiched by Rolf Harris on TV in the 1960s.

for some reason the Roger Brown materials; varnished wood, shiny screws, glazed ceramic cups and whatnot...just doesn't do it for me. The idea is there, but the art is lost. Too much like furniture. Although the painting style is rather hypnotic, the shelves et al get in the way.

jameskalm you meant relentlessly making ' oh-so-painterly' pornography inspired semi-abstract paintings that look like piles of shxt? the insistence is definitely impressive, or is it because people are willing to pay a lot for the turd? pretty typical lucky case of someone obviously not so talented stuck to be that one trick pony . and why all of a sudden making small size work? because small stuff sells faster and easier.
