- Gelvandale is quite popular for its diverse community, with a significant portion of the population being of Indian and coloured descent.
Unfortunately, it has also gained a reputation as one of the most dangerous suburbs in Port Elizabeth, and not without good reason. The area has struggled with a high crime rate for many years, with violent crime being the most prevalent.
Gang-related activity is a significant issue in Gelvandale, with gangs responsible for a significant portion of the violence in the area. Residents often live in fear of being caught up in the crossfire of gang-related shootings and assaults.
Furthermore, the socio-economic conditions in Gelvandale exacerbate the crime situation in the area. Poverty and unemployment are prevalent, which can lead to desperation and criminal behaviour among some residents.
The lack of opportunities and a sense of hopelessness can make some individuals feel that they have no other choice but to turn to crime to survive.
Moreover, the poor living conditions and inadequate infrastructure in the area make it easier for criminals to carry out their activities undetected.

So true, I was proven wrong, the community is quite opposite of what the media says.... I like Gelvandale.... It was also very clean and quiet, I guess like anywhere else in SA, it also has its ups and downs.... Wish the media narrative would change, Salute!
No, it's not I was there they told me run to the taxi because there were some guys that were shooting guns robbing people

Hi I'm from gelvandale was born here quite safe yes there is isolated case of drugs n alcohol abuse but quite frankly a very nice and chilled place dispite some cases of violence

Port Elizabeth people love to drink however they extremely hard working people. Extremely friendly and excellent host. Gelvandale is probably the safest area compared to katanga, korsten, shordaville also one must note that most violence is amongst the gangs and gangsters ordinary people are very seldom troubled by crime. P.e is probably one of the safest provinces in our country.

I am staying in Helenvale Stag street over 25 years and i am a Photographer for 20 years and i use to take photos in the whole of Helenvale so helenvale so i just wonder what this video you make were all about 😮 i just wonder

How's it bro, it's imperative that you do your homework of the area and or country you documenting. That said gelvandale stadium is very much in use. Local community and p.e at large uses the stadium right through the year for various different occasions

Well l had my fare share of Galvendale. Couple of years back we were at a youth function. We were rob inside the church gunshots were fired inside the church. That was my last day l set foot in Galvendale. 🙆🙆

Don't know much about. Galvendal. Had an aunty. Who immigrated from. Zimbabwe to port Elizabeth. But a lot of water has gone under the Zambezi to now hear a lot of Kirkwood was with late husband there in. 1988 stayed at hotel. Where lighthouse is
Thank you for sharing. Gelvandale is in the Northern Areas of PE, apparently it's not a bad area to stay though there are incidents of crime in and around the neighborhood or community of Gelvan, Helenvale on the hand is said to be notorious by media and people from around PE....
Helenvale starts from gailrd at the back streets from martin str it's dangerous to walk

Why concentrating on Gelvandale only? It doesn't represent the whole of the Northern Area. If you just went more north, you would have seen the poverty, chaos, and a fractured community that also affects Gelvandale, There is still Springdale, Beverly hills Helenvale (Katanga) these are all suburbs that are just separating Gelvandale by a single rd.

I used to stay in P.E for more than 12 years .I can tell you the dangerous areas out there. Booysen Park ,Kleinskool,Missionvalle,Katanga.All those are nothern areas including Shauder in Korsten.Missionvalle that's where I used to be that was my Hood.

What you saw in this video is what I saw during my day visit there, not sure at night though.... The community gave me a sense of any normal safe community or neighborhood in SA, yet the pictures painted by media is opposite to what I saw and experienced. For now I can safely say it is safe to visit during the day like anywhere else around PE or South Africa.
