- She was nosy, stubborn and not afraid to speak her mind, but Nell Mangel will go down in history as one of our favourite Ramsay street residents.

You can see why Neighbours was so popular back then. It was the older characters that made it great, not just Kylie and Jason.
I think it's been really good since. People just get stuck on specific things and refuse to accept change.
@Craigy2818 I totally agree, Kylie and Jason shouldn't have been brought back for the finale, thank goodness they didn't overshadow the current cast tho.
It was fresh and frank. Not fake and crap.
BINGO. A show can't be truly great without a great villain. Dallas got J.R. Neighbours got Mrs Mangel.
Let’s get it right, in a show full of legendary characters, Mrs Mangel is in a different league. Quite easily the greatest character the show has ever had.
This was when Neighbours was at it’s best.
The 80’s & 90’s was the shows best era.
I haven’t seen the shown in years
Mrs Mangel was absolutely brilliant & her sparring with Madge & Helen were legendary.
Vivian Grey was an outstanding actress and was fantastic in another long running soap “The Sullivans”
She was in Prisoner Cell Block H too.... She poisoned her husband over time but got away with it. Was based on a true story.
Mrs Jessup in the Sullivans
An excellent Australian actress. Her role as Mrs Jessop was beautiful played as the caring but nosy neighbour. She play the mathematics teacher in Picnic at Hanging Rock. I loved her as Nell Manel too.
The most iconic neighbours character ever. Especially at a time when they were all really strong characters.
Back then the shows and stories were character driven, rather than bedhopping and explosive caricatures that they are now.
Loved Mrs Mangels arguments with Madge they were classic, I bet Vivean and Anne enjoyed playing those scenes !
I used to see vivean Gray in shoreham on sea in west sussex where she retired, and she was the nicest person you can meet
@@josephxuereb1978 I mean, at the end of the day they were just acting! I guess it’s an accolade to an actor when people think of them as their character!
@@misplacedkiwi9498 of course, but at the time, she recieved alot of hate mail and people could not distinguish between the character and her real personality
@@josephxuereb1978 How did you recognise her? Had she altered much since Neighbours?
@@SimonandJojo her eyes and features were the same, and i was chatting to her for ages, and what a sweetheart she was
Mrs Mangel what a legend. Pity people weren’t able to distinguish between the actor and the character forcing her to leave
Poor Vivian!
Vivean, sorry!
I didn't know that
@@gazXspace me eather
I hate when that happens...
Vivean Grey, an icon of this programme and a blessing to her industry. Much missed. A joy to watch and an honour to reminisce. More of these please! 🙂💚⭐️
Where in God's name can we find these old episodes? I would literally just binge the entire thing from the start, but I can only find a few DVDs from random seasons. There NEEDS to be a Neighbours streaming archive set up where every episode can be watched. I'd pay good money for it.
Absolutely love Mrs Mangel, I wish the show had a character like her now
They do, her names Dipi
@@daneburton5747 Dipi is no Mrs Mangel
That’s true! That would be so good to have a Mrs Mangel on the show now!
Essentially Sheila, but much less prim and proper
I thought Mrs Mangel was quite a character, the old episodes were brilliant.
It's a testament to the late Vivean Grey as an actress as to how good she was as Mrs Mangel. Despite being on the show for only two and half years, she created one of the most memorable characters to have graced the series.
Everyone knows this type of woman. On the outside, she's a portrays herself as a caring, thoughtful Christian lady with high morals. In reality however, she was a nosy, judgmental woman who made life an absolute misery for everyone around her.
She did have those moments where she was able to express kindness to others (most notably her granddaughter Jane), but too often her holier than thou attitude pushed people away from her.
Vivien Grey was that convincing in the role that in real life she ended up having to leave the series due to people not being able to separate her from the part as she was being harassed by people and bombarded with hate mail from viewers.
My neighbour
So true. Some people R a really a complete and utter morons. She was the only ones that kept me from watching neighbours back in the day, when she left, I completely lost interest until Natalie Bassingswaites as Izzy arrived.
So many memories seeing Mrs Mangel. Plus a young Clive at the start.
I knew I recognised his face! 😂
I thought I recognised him! I didn’t realise Clive was in it then! He looks so different!
Bless her. Vivian Gray spent her final years living in Shoreham by Sea, just a few miles away from where I live. Absolute legend.
The golden age of Neighbours. Loved Mrs Mangel and her put downs. Nice to see her finally finding happiness when she left the show.
Pops be lucky to make it through the car journey
My stoney old heart welled up when Madge hugged Mrs Mangel.
Yeah she was a loveable old battleaxe. Mrs Mangel and Madge had some battles including the times they refused to call each other by their new married names. When Madge married Harold, Nell addressed Madge as Ramsey (her maidwn name when she drppped Mitchell following her divorce from.Fred) and when Nell married John Madge addressed her and Mangel.
She was so of her time. As a kid back then, she used to terrify me lol but I was very sad to learn that children used to harrass her in real life. She was a legend!
God I feel old turning 40 this weekend and watched most of this in the mid 80s to mid 90s
A child of that era or not I even know that it was simpler and a much more joyful time for most of us.
Oh Joe Mangal, what a character he was too. I remember he came here to do shows. He was well liked. Not seen him in years though. Omg bouncer too 😊
Joe has left it all behind, and is in Wales being a farmer! No neighbours anywhere near him!
@@katethomas5712 Lucky devil.Till.I came here I had no idea how unbelievable neighbors could be!
Ban-sah, used to love it when he called Bouncer.
@@katethomas5712 Good on him. I think it was The Big Breakfast show he done for a while and maybe some BBC Radio. I think he was the only one of that era that done anything like that. I had a relative in Australia and every time she would visit my sister and i would be asking her all these questions about them and she would say that nobody knew who they were except Kylie and Jason . Natalie Imbrugulia was yet to start music and Holly Vallance wasn't even in it at that time.
But yeah the guy who played Joe was the only one that knew how popular it was in the UK and to make the best of it was to move here after his character left the show.
Of course then there is Alan Dale who played Jim Robinson who went hollywood.
@mitchcraft
You're forgetting the best actor of them all: Guy Pearce
mrs.mangel is a great character
5:05 that music brings back early childhood memories!
Mrs Mangel was a woman of class, she spoke her mind. She might not always have got things right but a true neighbours legend
We need all episodes on some sort of streaming service, as all the episodes are special and remenising them brings joy and happiness to our lives again! Should be available to everyone
The sad music played at 5'05" in is one of the most iconic pieces they had and it was used for years and years. Love it. Great clips here.
Totally took me back!
Often imitated, never duplicated. Vivean Gray was a superlative TV actress and her "Nell Mangel" was one of the greatest creations in TV soap.
@@stevenhallam6370 Dot Cotton would like a word.
And may I add her role as Ida Jessop on The Sullivans. She won quite a few Logies too. I just adored her.
I so loved the incidental music played in the background in Neighbours during that era! It's a pity it was never retained for years to come
Loved Mrs Mangel. The days when Neighbours was at its best. Great storylines great actors and actually actors playing characters the same age and not 21 year olds playing 16 or 17 year olds like in soaps today.
Mrs Mangel was one of the handful of characters that made Neighbours in the 80s. That brief scene with Madge where they hug and recognise (and love) each other's differences was what made the show stand out from the crowd. A small, but absolutely momentous moment, never forgotten.
Mrs Mangel is a English actor aka Vivean Grey.
Just found out she was only there 2 years. 1986-1988. Thought she was there longer. Other big stars left same year, like Kylie and Jason too.
One of my favourite characters Mrs Mangle Interfering old fuddy duddy
It was brilliant viewing back in the day ....Fantastic!!
Dorothy Burke filled the void left by Nell Mangel.
Love this, she was one of the best icons in any soap I have seen.
A bloody magnificent legend. Neighbours forever.
Madge, Harold, Lou and Mrs Mangle were the actual best characters in this show.
Vivian created neighbours more iconic character. She’s still there now. In presence. Two years she played her her legacy lives on and on
Apparently her real name was Jean Gray, Vivean Gray was for work.
My Gran used to watch Neighbours for years and it was the first show I ever watched at a few days old.
She used to love Mrs Mangel and she stopped watching soon after she left because "it isn't the same without her". My gran was an opinionated battle axe so that's probably why she was such a fan, saw herself in the character.
haha such a great comment. My nan was the same. Grandparents are the best.
She was certainly unique from one extreme to another here. Never in the center as she'd bounce back and forth and she really prized Bouncer her dog as well, maybe more than anyone else. It's so weird watching a neighborhood seeing some one off that they may not of always liked but she indeed was the most memorable as well. I wonder what she was like in real life?! And top acting from Bouncer as well!
Mrs Mangle a legend
Good clips but 5 of her finest moments missing :
1) Playing the organ badly at Harold & Madge's wedding
2) Giving Harold a lecture on the eve of his wedding
3) The newspaper fight with Madge in the driveway
4) The reaction to Henry finding a gun buried in her garden
5) Getting all smitten with Daphne's grandad at Des and Daphne's wedding
yes i think Neighbours has being missed a caople ones of Mrs mangle
Exactly, putting the prowler scenes in there was a waste of time that could have been used for the scenes you mentioned...
She stuck the boot into Madge calling her Mrs Mitchell on her wedding day to Harold, Madge returned the favour by calling her Mrs Mangel when she married John. The last scene between the pair was classic.
Lol the newspaper fight 😂😂😂😂😂
Madge was epic ‘yes, go on, run away!’ 😂😂😂
The look on her face when she caught Charlene's bouquet, ha ha.
❤️Nell👍🙂
Mrs Mangel Aka Vivean Grey is typical English actor born in the UK. Great character doesn't take no nonsense.
The music at 5-5.50 mins - brought back memories!
Piece de resistance was Bouncer actually waving goodbye at the end... 💧❤️
The part where she was on her own after the police officer left ,was quite sad especially the background music. It is testament to the vast uncredited talent of Vivian gray that make this scene quite sad to watch.
10:46 is not enough time to even scratch the surface of that icons greatest moments. Brilliant exit scene too
love every moment of it love Mrs mangle Neighbours please please update more of theses wonderful memories just remember Neighbours become good friends just think of us fans for the future
Bouncer 🦮
I was about 4 or 5 when mrs mangle was on neighbours. Think my older brothers teased me and said she was a witch! Every time she appeared on screen it scared me 😂
Same. I remember thinking Helen's portrait of her was hilarious as a little kid!
Mr Worthington played Stan Dobbs in Prisoner
So many of the iconic stars in this clip. I would run home from college to catch this show from 1897 to the early 90s. Brings back wonderful memories of being young and Ramsey Street 💙
1897?Not easy running in a long skirt!LOL
3:33 - 😂😂😂
Everyone knows someone like Mrs Mangel lol
The OG #Stickybeak ! x
Everybody knows a Nell Mangel.
Great to see Bouncer again, just loved that pooch 😀
She's iconic, and an inspiration.
She was a legend :)
That last scene, especially the bit with Anne Charleston, gives me goose-bumps.
Beautiful storytelling
Vivian was superb. She created the greatest character in its history. Shame she never returned. She retired and nobody knew what happened to her. She had many more years left in neighbours.
She left the series due to the amount of hate mail and abuse she received from fans. She then retired from acting and moved back to England, where she lived for the rest of her life.
@@nkt1 Hades, why r hoomans so blamed mean? And kind of pathetic they cannot part fact from.fiction.
One of the most iconic and great characters to live in Ramsay Street. This is Neighbours at its best! Very sad the real reason she left, there was so much more she could have done in the show. RIP Vivien Grey - what a legend! 😊
what's the reason?
@@tonymil7319 she was continually harassed by members of the public because they couldn't distinguish the difference between a character and an actress! People used to throw bricks at her house, throw things at her in the street, verbally abuse her etc. It got too much for her 😔

This era represents my earliest childhood memories. Watching this before I was even in school. Aged 3 or 4.
Mrs Mangel was the best character in Neighbours
We used to rush home from school in time for neigbours here in the UK. I remember when it started. Same with home and away. Fantastic TV
Vivian Grey was a great actress. Totally agree with all the other posted comments.
English actor Mrs Mangel aka Vivean Grey.
Mrs Mangel was the iron lady of Neighbours
I was upset when she left the show. I remember that. She used to peep out her curtains lol
The OG Nell
She put Hyacinth Bucket to shame.
My darling, beautiful, gorgeous Nellie-kins! Ramsay Street wasn't the same without my sweet one! Love you, Nellie, my precious, my sweetie-darling! Come back - you are very much missed!
Vivian Gray was a nice lady, she was a regular customer at a Hardware shop worked at in England.
Omg Clive is in it! He looks so young! Nice seeing Mrs Mangel again!
Don't tangle with Mangel!
I can remember these episodes like they were shown yesterday and I am 43 year been watching it since 1985. love it
The actress was getting a ton of hate mail.
I swear they made her love bouncer so that Vivean would get more fan mail and her goodbye was perfect.
I think if a villain is evil enough to get real life hate mail. They deserve merit and praise. Not hate.
Absolutely brilliant actress.
Loved Mrs mangle I've not watched Neighbours since the late 90s it was great in the 80s that's my favourite years of Neighbours
Mrs Mangel was a representative of old Australia and the Ten Pound Poms. Brilliant actress.
Bouncer!! I love Bouncer :))
Mrs Mangel was one you could call the witch of the series, she did sort of tone down as years when on and she got amnesia, but her leaving was a big blow considering there no one near as mean around to replace her and there was no more rivarly for Madge.
Vivean was born in the same place as I live in Cleethorpes England. This for some reason though goes under the radar even in her home town. It was years before I knew this. That portrait that was painted of her was so funny!
Oh wow! I had no idea she was born in England.
I grew up watching Neighbours and I remember thinking that portrait was hilarious as a small child 🤣.
@@AlisonBryen Yes she is English her accent is very posh and well spoken no hint of aussie at all.
PS. The scene where she falls off the ladder in the Clarke's house and loses her memory is missing from this collection of clips
So many of her best moments are missing, not sure why they wasted so much time with that scene in which she thinks there's a prowler.
I remember a weird scene of this show when I was a little kid, that scared the shit out of me. Mrs Mangel's niece (I think) the one in pink at 2:51, can't find Mrs Mangel when she was supposed to meet her or something, so she goes to her house. She lets herself in and walks into the living room nervously saying "Nan...?" and looks scared as she finds Mrs Mangel sitting there on an armchair staring into space and smiling, not responding to anything, like she is hypnotized or dead. There was creepy music playing, and then the episode ends. Now that would be funny but back then it was just scary lol What was going on in that scene?
The girl in pink is her granddaughter Jane
Mrs mangej was brilliant 👏
What about to that scene when Harold Bishop goes to bed and finds out that he is in the same bed as Mrs Mangel.
Yep, so many great scenes ignored for drawn out scenes that didn't show her at her best at all...l mean come on, that prowler scene...really??
That probably be more suitable for a video on The Best of Harold Bishop instead.
😂 lol that was the best😂😂😂
Been watching a few of your vids featuring '80s Neighbours. I've discovered two things: 1) I love and miss so many of those characters. 2) I LIKED and STILL LIKE 1980s fashions! Thanks for the memories x
Mrs mangel makes sense now and what’s with the back ground music Where we really listening to this type of music in the 80s
Mrs Mangel she is actually British Born and immigrated to Australia like most have for decades.
What beautiful stage sets, even now they look great!
#bringbackMrsMangel'sfrontroom
Australians are mainly English settlers same like Mrs Mangel AKA Vivian Grey.
she was an exceptional actor
English Actor well spoken and speaks her mind Mrs Mangel.
Need to ask a question. I always remember an episode of Neighbours way back then when Mrs Mangle was sitting on her chair and I think it might have been Sky walked in and she was just sitting in her chair looking forward and wouldn't speak and the house was a mess. Sky then ran across the road to maybe Harold's house and said somethings wrong with Mrs Mangle and when they came back to the house the camera panned to her dusting the mantlepiece and she was just fine. Does anyone remember this and what the storyline was? I just clearly remember that happening but can never find the episode or info about it. And I seem to be the only one who remembers it lol.
I remember that scene, it was scary because of how weird it was, Mrs Mangel was just staring into space like she's dead lol I think it was her niece in pink Jane who found her. When I was a little kid I thought soap operas were realistic so to have a weird creepy scene suddenly happen out of nowhere was jarring. I think there was a mystery about what happened, there was blood on the floor and so a burglar broke in or something and Mrs Mangel had amnesia, but I don't know why she was frozen like that or exactly what happened
@@imcallingjapan2178 Oh my god someone else actually remembers this. I have asked countless people and they just don't recall it. Yes, she literally was just staring into space all creepy but then when they came back to the scene she was all good as far as I remember. And as you said I also probably remember it because I was like 9 or 10 and so it was very weird. I need to try and find the episode. I guess it wouldn't be too too difficult to find it. I just need to look. Thanks for replying and confirming it wasn't just me thinking that happened.
@@brianharrison3676 I think it may have been the storyline where previous to that scene, she was heard arguing off camera with her husband Len (who we never saw) Jane heard her say 'I could kill you Len Mangel'. The scene of her being in a trance was a plot device to suggest maybe she had killed Len because he disappeared shortly after and other pieces of evidence such as blood and a gun were found about the house.
