I'm so glad you mentioned the friction part and how if you're weak and drag them across your body, upper body weakness, etc...bc "I" fall under this category badly and I didn't immediately think about that aspect of it at first when breaking down/setting up my chair so thx for looking out for ALL of us girl!! I have similar ones on my chair but they don't have the little nubs on them. I think they came from Poland. I got them on Amazon.
There are good and bad things that Ive found. 1) I wish I had them years ago because they would have saved my doorways from getting chewed up. 2) they are very comfortable for my hands, one which has arthritis. This is the main reason I got them. 3) when I'm taking my chair apart or putting it together when getting in my car, they tend to get caught on my car door when I reposition my chair. I have to use more effort when I turn my chair to keep and to keep it near me. A few times it almost got away from me!
To keep hands from getting "push burns" and callouses wear push gloves or weight lifting gloves. The brand I like is called "Hatch". You can get them in half finger/full thumb or full finger glove style for colder weather. They are padded with gel and have a slightly roughed up surface to aid with gripping wet hand rims. They are made by a company that makes gloves for law enforcement and military. They well made and very durable and last for months.
In the beginning I tied golf gloves and weight lifting gloves but they quickly fell apart. This was 20 years ago so maybe now there are better gloves out there that will last longer.

Pushrimcovers are the best :) I haven't experienced these with the extra grippy texture, but even smooth ones make a big difference. My strength wears out very quickly and with this friction I don't have to squeeze as hard to get a sufficient amount of grip.

Hi Gem, thanks for this video about the push rims!
I am saving money to purchase some red ones as soon as possible, cause pushing is so much easier with them on the pushrims. And it is much warmer to touch in winter or when it is raining. Well, I 'll send you a picture when I have them on my wheelchair! As it is a red one I need red ones for it of course!!! Have al ovely day! Britta

I was just looking for new ones and came across your video. Not that mine are worn, they're just black. Can't get over the price increase, mine were £40 about 4 or 5 years ago. But, depending on your wheelchair service area, some wheelchair services actually provide these. So certainly worth asking if you have a chair supplied by them.

You should be able to eliminate the vibration/farty noise by gumming the edges of the covers down. I'm not sure what would work best but I think I've seen some removable glue/gum advertised for something similar in the past.

Coming back to his again because if you get the smooth type, they may look like they're too big for the push rim. They're not. You want to twist the cover till it sort of settles on the pushrim, they will look like there is a bubble type thing and a section just won't sit, this will be solved by twisting it around. Honestly! I don't find mine come off but mine are pretty thick smooth ones.

I tend to destroy covers quickly. Also they tend to get in the way or burn my hands while braking going down ramps and such. So when needing to add more power to wheel up ramps i just put my thumbs over the tires to push. Yes, you get dirty. Thats what hand wipes are for ! And no, i hate gloves if yer asking.

@ Strange Kat -- Have you ever tried 'refurbishing' any of your boring hospital issue- type crutches?
If you trust yourself to completely disassemble the hospital-issue crutches (AND THEN reassemble them correctly), then I don't see any reason why you can't take any paint intended for metal -- _I'm thinking bike paint or car paint would be ideal, but in the USA we have all kinds of paints for metal furniture, etc that would likely work, too_ -- and paint the boring gray to make it the color (or colors) or your choice. Then find some cool sports grip tape, typically intended for sports equipment handles, to match your cool new paint job -- _tennis racket grip tape, hockey / lacrosse grip tape tape, baseball / softball bat grip tape, golf club grip tape, etc._
Of course, this would be "at your own risk"... _(As someone who used to work as an engineer, until my employers kept deciding that my disabilities were too much of a hassle to accommodate, I have a difficult time seeing how someone could 'mess this up' UNLESS they (1) didn't reassemble the crutches properly, (2) changed the FORM and/or FUNCTION of the crutches, and/or (3) did something dumb during the refurb process instead of following common sense...yes, mistakes do happen =/ .)_

    • @strangekat2840
      @strangekat2840 Před 5 lety

just listened to your farty noise video...lol.
It's not the push rim covers that are making the noise it's your coat sleeve on the wheel.
i've been using push rim covers for years and never had that problem.
Try them without your coat on and you won't hear anything.

These were the cheapest available, and now that theyve gone out of service, the cheapest USD I can find now are well over 150 dollars. They're expensive, yes, but they weren't literally more than a basic chair costs like the rest ive found have been.

Are they? You can just take them off and soak them in the bath with a little gentle soap. Let the dry and job done. X

Out of curiosity have you enquired whether they can be washed in a dishwasher (if you have one obviously!)? Silicone is usually dishwasher safe so just a thought.

@@Wheelsnoheels - It was just a thought. Dishwashers are indeed versatile: pets, car mats you name it! Only kidding obviously leather or fabric leashes must be removed first!! :)
