You can travel to Kokoto if you upgrade the boat. There you can hunt Rathalos and Monoblos. Kirin should also appear in the quest list since Kushala, but it's random chance. You need to slay it in the mountains to get the Chameleos quest after hunting every village monster. I think Teostra is unlocked after that.

I often think of it as the less of a hitbox problem and more of an animation problem. The games would have had major balancing problems if the hotboxes were adjusted to fit the animation better, instead I think the animation should have been adjusted to more properly match the hitbox.
@@Lutyrannus matching the animations with the hitboxes wouldn't fix the main problem of old MH fights being horribly designed.

Gypceros fake death worked in Unite if there were multiple mons to hunt. He's still a silly fella that more likely wakes up to 4 hunters stacking barrel bombs on him tho

it also works in MH2, I can definitely say that after playing online. It wakes up the MOMENT you get close to it (in low rank at least) so a lot of newer players get close without realizing, and it's wakeup is almost an instakill depending on your defense.

Ironically, Rathalos charges more than Rathian in this game and those are much less predictable than Rathian charges. On top of that he also does dragon damage with those.
Btw, if you upgrade the Boat in the village you can travel to Kokoto and fight Rathalos and Monoblos.
Kirin is also a random encounter and if you hunt every village monster you unlock Chameleos and Teostra.

The bouncing that you mentioned on Daimyo Hermitaur is actually a mechanic that affects sharpness at yellow or lower. When attacking, if your attack connects near the beginning or end of the attack animation, it will have significantly reduced sharpness (0.3x (70% reduction) if it connected at the beginning, and 0.5x (50% reduction) if it connected at the end), and thus bounce on parts that you usually would not bounce on. This is a feature in every monster hunter game, but you don't really experience it that much in the newer games due to them usually giving you green sharpness super early.
That's... i never knew that. Part of me wishes for hunts where your weapons are just total dogshit but it's the best you can get because your hunter is stationed in a place with poverty.
Getting to green was such a fun milestone.

@@thechazz3230 The closest thing I can come up with is instances where a longsword can bounce at the tip but not the center of the blade, but that's due to damage modifiers and not the animation itself, something I've also never heard of.

If you play this game its very accurate. Your first and many other carts are likely to come from small crabs lol
When playing Dos you have to throw expectations of 2nd gen and psp monster hunter out the window. The game has a very different mechanics, armour system, offline and online progression, and of course controls (built off of MH1 and G of course).
psp titles are intended for after school fast food sessions
Theres a patched MHDos iso that allows for modern controls like MHTri with double analog camera control and button press attacks
MH1 G the Wii version also has modern controls and camera
@@jhkuno88 That version isn't really worth playing ATM as it lacks online servers so you can't play multiplayer and I'm still working on it's English patch.
@@jhkuno88 The MH2plus patch does have some bugs and doesn't work with the most recent English patch Yuzucchi will get to fixing it at some point.
11:37 You are bouncing sometimes because there is a late/early hit damage penalty for every blademaster weapon if you are below green sharpness. The times you do not bounce are because you are hitting during the 'sweetspot' of the weapon's animation.
As a monster hunter veteran, I'm still getting surprised by all the little things I learn every now and then about the games. Like the fact they they used this exact mechanic for Rise (which is how I even know it exists), or the fact that you can fish Nibelsnarf out of the ground under certain circumstances.
It is my father Pak Pak, feeding me with my monthly meal like a mother feeds a baby bird.

Pre 3rd gen you mean, also 4U's G Rank is probably harder than 3U's, do you agree? At least it felt easier to me (i cheesed 3U with Poncho Anubis and Slime Swaxe)

@@sakuranohana1014 Idk, Raging Brachydios in 4U felt even easier than both his World counterpart and frenzied normal Brachy in the same game. He's much more manageable. Also i'd always take Apex Zinogre (the 4U one) over Stygian (the 4U one).
I still hate some monster because of their hitbox even though it have been more or less fixed in newer gen

i played monster hunter before and died probably over 500+ times
the small crabs are no problem in any mh game other than dos.
in dos, they have more attack better tracking and speed.
it will see you from across the map and the second you start your potion animation it was side skuttle from the other side of the area in 0.5 seconds to knock that last 10% hp you had clean off your thigh. its fantastic!

This is unironically one of my favorite games in the series. It's a totally different pace than anything that came after, but it is very immersive.

I'm one of the weirdoes who kind-of like the old MH mentality of needing to prepare - hot / cold drinks, paintballs, fights getting nerfed from absolute nightmares to pretty easy with flash / sonic bombs and barrels etc. Also basically needing earplugs to not lose your mind against constantly screaming Khezu and the like.
I get that crafting hot drinks isn't exactly exciting gameplay or even require anything besides the mats and some clicks, but it adds to the feeling of being an underdog that should use every tool available to not be horribly mangled, if that makes sense. It's strange, I realize it's so obviously conventionally "bad" game design but I still like it.
Those goddamn crabs & boars constantly interrupting you can go straight to hell tho!
It's really not bad game design? It teaches you preparation! And gives some risk to the environment.
@@JeanKP14 I'm also a fan of the old MH survival aspects, including hot/cold drinks, but they are objectively uninteresting. Yes, they teach you about preparation but beyond the early stages of the game they just take up an inventory slot and add nothing interesting besides "immersion".
@@AsDf-fq1sh imo they encouraged seeing the areas as actual ecosystems rather than just really big boss arenas in world there was almost no point scavenging you don't even stop to gather herbs and honey anymore hell they cut the blue mushroom from the potion recipe so every herb spot is an automatic free potion in older games the hunt was the main event now its pretty much a boss rush to the end
@@thesilverblueman I agree that scavenging isn't something you do a lot in World, but the enviroment is even more important there thanks to the hunter actions. Playing SnS really makes you love how they designed every World map
I've been replaying FU for a while now with a friend new to the series and we've made it to mid HR for now, and honestly that preparation thing isn't relevant for long enough. Like in LR 4 you already have quite the stock for preparation to be reduced to merely switching inventory sets before you depart

It’s always awesome to see more people start their Dos journey~ I only hope you’ll give the full game a shot, online is a fun and fairly different experience (even if you’ll encounter similar hunts for a bit).
I really hope you decide to play online, in my opinion it's where a lot of the game's design shines.

This video made it onto my front page and I’m so glad it did. It took until Rise to truly get me into the series after trying multiple different tries with the others (mainly the portable ones). It finally clicked and I had so much fun but while I don’t think it would be something I’d enjoy too much, I love the older games making you actually prepare for a hunt before setting off instead of just eating, and love videos about the old games.
Got a new sub from me and I love horror retrospectives as well so I feel I have found a great channel to watch :)
Well this was a fun coincidence, I had just now recently begun playing MH Tri Ultimate to experience the old style of games as I first got into the series with Rise. I personally don't think I'll go quite as far back as the original PS2 games as the controls horrify me, but it was fun watching and seeing where my favorite boy Teostra's first appearance.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I hope to see more MH content form you in the future.
The controls are the same as the first Monster Hunter, which were really unintuitive when I played it back then. Glad the newer games control better.

You are missing one thing: it didn't start using right analog for attacks, that was the first game. Dos just kept it.

Found this video last night and what a treat it was. While I've only played a small amount of MHDos, I did play through the village of MH1 and this video brought back a lot of painful, but loved memories of that time.

Regarding Kushala Daora and storms, I have a theory.
It may very well create storms, but only if requirements are met, like moisture or something, like clouds in the sky or whatever. Kushala Daora generates wind, so that might act as a catalyst for a storm's start in a concentrated area around it. A desert during the day might simply be too dry to cause a storm with its wind-abilities.

That is basically the sequence of traumas I had on my first experience with old Monster Hunters as a kid. How the f*ck did I come to love this series before I even knew what I was doing.
Between classes in college I would watch my friend play this game and get progressively more angry. It was a great game to watch this way.

Bulldrome was the epitome of glass cannon. Actually good beginner monster. You either figure out how to constantly be hitting him while avoiding getting hit, or your getting trampled.

I've been watching a lot of videos about older monster hunter titles and I gotta say this was probably my favourite so far!
This happens to me for the first time when playing Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and then when I'm at the quest called "Clashing Fists" to fight against the toughest Brachydios, and then if I'm already at dangerously low health after being hit by that monster, and then this stupid rhenoplos finished me off, and then I fainted for reals, that's why!

If they need reruns, they should start by polishing up MH2 and MH3 with the modern day features and QoL touches since most of it is already there. I'd be interested in it, surely; I think it was the first MH game I ever touched, and when I say 'touched', I mean I saw it on someone's console and dabbled with it, but my foggy memories of being a pre-teen had no room for MH until I embraced MH3 and was molded by Underwater combat.
Didn't 3 get a touch-up with the ultimate versions on 3ds and Wii U? Or I guess you mean even further touch-up for more modern consoles?

What exactly do you mean by endgame grind? Wasn’t MH4 the first one with a real „endgame“ how we know it today?
@@RaveF0Xx not really. The endgame grind in MHDos is unlocking all the special monsters (Metal Raths, Fatalis) As you don't actually unlock them all once you hit the highest quest bracket. And for white fatalis armor, you need to make black fatalis armor and upgrade it to crimson and from there upgrade it to white. So a lot of rare material farming to make the rarer/stronger sets.
after this video I will never try dos, also the monsters look boring compared to world

YES, Monster Hunter Dos is a classic, although I have only had the pleasure of playing it now, sad it didn't get an English release. but Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is a solid game as well.
This was something I noticed when I was watching on PC, but you might wanna try mixing your bass to make it a little less intense. Other than that this was a really great video and I'm interested to see what other MonHun content you'll make!
