    Who else is running wheel spacers?

      I use them on my Toyota pickup. For tire wheel clearance against the suspension arms bc I put alot newer wheels tires on older IFS truck

    The Negatives
    The main issue with a wheel spacer is that it moves the wheel to a wider position whilst the rest of the suspension arms remain in the same place. In particular, the king pin inclination axis remains in the same place. Therefore, fitting a wheel spacer moves the wheel outboard and alters the scrub radius of the car. It is important to know whether your car currently has negative or positive scrub radius and ideally how much it has. Fitting a wheel spacer will increase the positive scrub radius at the front wheels which has some unfavorable consequences.
    If your car already has a bit of positive scrub radius then the wheel spacer will increase it. An increase in positive scrub radius increases the forces on the steering rack under braking conditions. Any bumps in the road will also be amplified through the steering wheel, making the steering jerky and more unpredictable. Twitching wheels when braking can cause the tire to lose grip and ultimately can cause the wheels to lock up and slide. An increase in positive scrub radius also causes the wheel to gain positive camber when the wheels are being turned, reducing grip in corners on the front wheels and producing understeer. If your car has the more favorable set up of negative scrub radius then installing a wheel spacer can cause bigger issues. The outward movement of the wheel can make a negative scrub radius become zero. This is the worst position for it to be in. A zero scrub radius can cause squirm. This is where a scrubbing action occurs on both front tyres in opposite directions which can create unpredictable handling in corners and can lead to understeer too.
    Secondly, installing wheel spacers on a car increases the leverage on the wheel bearing. The larger the spacer, the larger the leverage becomes. This reduces the life of the wheel bearing as they are not made to take leverage forces and can therefore wear faster, increasing rolling resistance and power loss of the car.
    Finally, the wheel spacer moves the wheel further away from the damper mounting point. This means that the wheel will have a larger effect upon the damper and will act upon it with more leverage. This effectively makes the spring and damper softer and less effective on the wheel. This means that the car can roll more on corner entry and exit and feel generally softer out on track or on the road.”

      Are the negative impacts the same for smaller spacers? I am thinking 3 - 8mm.

    • @rubioalejo
      @rubioalejo Před 3 lety

      @@nx555v when the car is rear wheel drive , recommend maximum thickness of spacers on front is 5mm and rear up to 15mm.
      3mm front and 8mm rear is perfectly fine!

    • @spencerhoff7373
      @spencerhoff7373 Před 3 lety

      @@nx555v yeah, good explanation. Obviously it scales, so the bigger you go the greater the impact. Really depends on the car. I have buddy who has an evo and when he tracked it with spacers it was frightening i guess. Other friends have audis or bmws and some of them run upwards of 20-25mm spacers without issue. So, it can vary but the closer you can get to proper fitment for your car, the better (center bore, bolt pattern, offset etc)

      there is absolutely no difference from this than using a different offset wheel your car doesnt know the difference in several examples.. as long as you have proper stud length to compensate for the spacer and its not crazy.. eg.. if your stock wheels are 17x7 et50 an get a 17x7 et35 your effectively pushing it out 15mm.. I have ran wheel spacers for decades with 0 issues not one wheel bearing fail or any other issue.. But i also use proper stud lengths when installing them and i have only used H&R ones so cant comment on other companies.. Im only referencing reliability on my part i can only go by personal experience with this and again i have never had any issues in using them for at least 20+ years

    I just bought 25 & 30mm spacers. Currently I have small 3mm spacers on there. You think it’d be okay to run the 3mm spacer under the big spacers so that it clears the bolts and not have to cut them? They’re both hub centric spacers

  • @Sunde53
    @Sunde53 Před 5 lety +2

    the only thing i have against spacers are big spacers, they might make the wheel flush or poke from the fender, but when you see the car from behind and or under you can see a 225 tire when its supposed to be like a 255-275 whatever it may be it looks weird, its some hovercraft shit. i guess it would save money from buying a 18x9.5 or 10 then bigger tires, but i dont see a real problem with spacers lol pretty sure its all myth and idiots, if installed correctly and you get a spacer with a hubcentric ring as well i dont see a problem, upgraded quality arp wheel studs for big spacers etc.

  • @adamsorell4851
    @adamsorell4851 Před 2 lety +1

    Incorrect. The hub bears no weight. It just centers the wheel. If the lug nut is tapered its hub centric of its conical its lug centric
