1986 Ford XF Falcon S Pac Wagon: Part 3 - Update & Drive

  • This is the final of three videos we've put together on the XF. We were expecting to have to do more to the car; it was basically good to drive from the very first turn of the key. Not much of a "project" as it turns out.
    We're very impressed with it. It's quiet, comfortable and smooth. There're no strange noises, no squeaks or rattles, and no whine from the diff (I was expecting it to sound like 90% of the XF taxis I've used in the past). This is not a rare car; with 278,101 produced, the XF was Ford Australia's most successful Falcon model. One online site gave the XF a one star rating (out of five) for "Collectability." Even though there were a lot of them in the day, they have become rarer to see on the roads.

    250 Crossy with a 5 speed manual is the dictionary definition of effortless! 👍

    Simplest check is the filler neck. ULP will have the narrow throat. You’ll find the hard ADR deadline for ULP manufactured cars was 1-Feb-86, and there’s quite a number of (leaded) VK V8s I’ve come across with 12/85 on the body tag, and 1/86 on the ADR/chassis tag. I never knew they made the S with the 3.3L. Had numerous friends with them over the years (some since new) and they were all 4.1L, with the odd EFI one - manual EFI were a pretty punchy car. This wagon has all the right S bits too, including one of my favourite Aussie instrument clusters with the analogue & VFD combination. What great condition for a 37 year old car. Nice find.

      Cheers for the info. The former owner is still chasing the paperwork he says he has which says it's an early ULP engine (although it has a wider throat). My personal guess is it's not. My only interest about the engine has to do with the use of Valve Save; I'm wondering if the original owner used it as a lead replacement? I would have preferred the 4.1 (and I'll be greedy and ask for a 5 speed while I'm at it). I was surprised it was a 3.3 S Pac too.

    No power steering I noticed that when looking at the engine. But been a 200 (3.3L) and manual you wouldn't always expect that and perhaps the buyer wanted to save money with reduced cost options. A great example for sure, has all the standard S pack features such as foglamps, digital dash displays, adjustable steering, etc.

      I think I would have saved money the same way ... maybe I would have opted for the 4.1 litre if I were buying new. I had a friend who had an S Pac XF sedan as a company car as an 19 year old. Going around the corner in the wet, she wrapped it around a telegraph pole. She blamed the ultra light power steering for her overcorrection. I really like the road feel and feedback of this car without power steering.

      I remember I once took a XB Falcon 500 wagon for a drive, 250 engine, column shift manual (front bucket seats with fold down arm rest centre seat) and it had aftermarket power steering. I agree I found it extremely light. My 2006 Nissan Tiida and 2000 Mitsubishi Magna TJ Sports feel much better, both are auto. I also owned a 1986 Mazda 323 (BF), 3 speed auto with no power steering but my goodness it felt great on the road, was just underpowered and would have been better 4 speed auto (1.6L). Many years ago I owned a 1989 TP Magna GLX wagon manual without power steering, bigger car but lighter than the Mazda and it felt just as good. So yeah cars without power steering do feel good on the road that is for sure.

    the easiest way to tell is the exhaust system, if it has a catalytic converter then its an unleaded engine, if it does not then leaded engine.
    XF with 3.3L in S-Pac trim with no air con and power steering? that would be a very rare combo.
    Nice Falcon, if you still have it please look after it.

    What a find! And with the extras in the boot. Sadly cars like this in NZ would be extremely rare and cost moonbeams now after the events of the last few years. I wonder why it was parked up? Great for a Xmas road trip video.

      Cheers for the post. A mechanic friend of ours bought it at a deceased estate auction in Canberra, and because of work commitments, he didn't get the chance to do anything with it. He had it parked in his yard for close to a year before he agreed to sell it to us ($4000). Last official service, according to the windscreen service sticker, was the beginning of 2019 ... I don't think it's done many kms in the past few years.

    Funny how Ford didn't give a XF Falcon S-pack Power steering or Air con as standard, yet they gave you digital Fuel & Temp gauges , which does nothing to improve the ride comfort of the driver or passengers over a bog-stock GL Falcon.

    Sweet ride, looks like a great cruiser. I was under the impression that the side bumper indicators were fitted to unleaded cars only

    • @DPOSFS
      @DPOSFS  Před rokem +2

      G'day and thanks. I reckon that's the best description; a great cruiser. You're right. The Series 2 had the bumper bar indicators and unleaded engines. The former owner said he saw paperwork that this late Series 1 wagon had an unleaded engine, but he couldn't find the paperwork. I was thinking it could have been an early running change just before the official launch of the new engines. Just to be sure, we'll continue to use Valve Saver. I'll see if Ford can tell me one way or the other.

    XF Falcons truly are a great car, they have stood the test of time and proven that you can still drive them even 40+ years later without any major work.
    What was the owners reason for parking this one up?

    • @DPOSFS
      @DPOSFS  Před rokem +1

      It was part of a deceased estate. Apparently it's a one-owner car. A mechanic friend of ours bought it at the deceased estate auction, and because of work commitments, didn't get the chance to do anything with it. He had it parked in his yard for close to a year before he agreed to sell it to us.

      There’s not many left on the road - that in itself says they haven’t lasted. The build quality of them was appealing and only matched by the series 1 EA.

    Never seen a S pack with a 3.3, was it a special order?

    • @DPOSFS
      @DPOSFS  Před 6 měsíci

      Hi. No, factory produced that way. Don’t quote me on this, but I think later on in the production run all S Pac cars had the larger engine. This is the very last of the first series … the next month they switched to a Series II with the unleaded engine … maybe it happened around this time. Again, it’s a good question … I’ll have to do some research to confirm. Cheers

      All a matter of taste. I think some of them were pretty good such as the XE. I was a Holden man until I bought my first new car ... a 2005 Holden Adventra. What a shocker.

      XE ESP was beautiful and an XF can look great. The 90s had some great lookers too. The ED XR range looked stunning along with EF and EL XR

    • @351tgv
      @351tgv Před 3 měsíci

      @@DPOSFS - the only good thing about the Adventra was the Borg warner developed Cross Trek AWD system which Ford later used in the 2011 onwards Territory turbo diesel replacing the previous old style BTR AWD set up which used traction control and open diffs for constant torque transfer which chewed out front and rear tyres.
      The rest was pure GM crap.
