- One super cool sleeper on Melbourne roads is George Hatzi's Ford Fairmont Ghia. The Falcon XF street car is now powered by a newer Barra turbocharged six that has got fantastic results while still keeping a lot of that retro 80s vibe.

I turbocharged my xf Fairmont Ghia about 15 years ago. I installed an EA ecu to do away with the airflow meter for the map sensor, fitted a 12:1 fmu, front mount, high rise manifold with screamer, small turbo by todays standards and everything else remained standard. It's the most comfortable car I've driven and the suspicion you'd see after opening the gate followed by the blow off valve is a highlight.
Looks are decieving. That's a true sleeper. Grew up with these cars.❤. Very nice.

Those door handels break because the bushes on the hinges are stuffed, once the door drops it hooks the latch up and thats why you have to lift on the crappy diecast handle.

OMG my Aussie grand dad had one of those, an ESP with a smog 351 that made 200hp. I remember riding in it as a kid on a trip to Aussie to visit him y'all.
must have changed the engine then because the xf model was never offered with a v8
did xf have esp.i always thought they were an xe thing.
Clearly a viewer from the Good ol USA that actually rode in an XE as a kid, and time has blurred that memory. Easy on the guy! Cool story though! 👍

Barra kills it for me mainly because I remember the boosted xflow boy's and the sound was glorious
Do love a SOHC myself, but still a sweet car!
The xflow turbos sounded so grunty and they are, I want to see a tripple carby barra in a older ford

My first car was an XE 250 with a stock 4 speed BorgWarner brought it for $1100 and came with a spare diff and got the gearbox rebuilt and the suspension lifted because i was on my P plates. I would love to get an XF and do a garret sleeper like this if i could get one in reasonable body condition. This car is amazing mate well done keeping one of the most stylish 80s cars alive...
Hell yeah.. owned one myself 87 Monty gia white ,extremely low and loud. Had it from 99 to 2022.. allways wanted to do a Barra or single cam swap.. ford guys are the best, we just tell it how it is. This is one of the best sleeper builds in the country and what a top bloke that owns it…

The door handles last longer when you push your thumb into the handle as you lift it until it pops. Then you can pull the door open.
I heard a story about XD - XF falcons from a Brisbane taxi driver. When the door handles start becoming difficult to open, customers would struggle. But for some reason, the aboriginal customers had a natural knack to open the doors without issue.

George is a true gentleman, he has assisted the old man and people like me who are new to the world of working on cars. A huge passion for cars and knowledge, especially when it comes to electrical.
Back in '88 at the panel shop, we used to transform loads of the used VIC Police XF patrol vehicles that Bayford bought at auction to then sell to the public & almost every XF had broken door handles. Ford would of raked in heaps selling XF door handles.

What a ripper old car. My dad bought a ZL Fairlane brand new back in the day with the full digital dash like the Ghia, he loved that thing.

my father in law want to gift me his ZL Fairlane for free, it was his mums and only has 135k on the clock, but as its hardly been driven has a few mechanical problems its in good conditions for its age just not sure if its worth the hassle taking it on
@@jnr83j The electronics in those can be very problematic, especially so given the age of the car now. Just be aware of the possible cost and spare parts issues.

I had an XF for 10 years and lived with that door handle anxiety, it was horrible!
Also ball joints every time it needed front tyres.
What excites me the most is that it’s an 80’s Falcon.

I know some fitters that used to work at that factory. Wool used to be massive back in the day too. Sadly all gone or going away.
I LOVE this car! Love me the XF and love the Barra's. If George ever did sell this car, I'd want to know as I'd be dead set on buying it.
Hey George, that is a awesome Fairmont Ghia. I also had a 87 S-pak EFI T5 in Monza Red back in the 90’s it was a great reliable car. 👍🏼

Its so funny im a holden man and always hated the xd/xf style shape unless was a 351fairlane with convos. But when i see them these day i love em and want to buy them all. Thats nostalgia for ya its a powerful thing
I had a red 86 XF S pack back in 2009 when I was in the RAN whilst based in HMAS Cerberus, it was my very first car. I couldn't register it as I had to do a fair bit of shit to get it road worthy but I just didn't have the time or money to do it. To have it parked on base, it needed to be registered so I had to park it outside the base in the golf course car park. It stayed there for at least 2 months, and one day I went to get it so I could take it to the mechanic, and it had been stolen. I saw it driving around Crib point at least 1 month later sporting a new black paint job.
Theres a beige wagon getting around my area, it looks in VERY original condition. A mate also had one 25 years ago, no power steering and column shift manual.

My mate from school, his dad bought a brand new XF S pack manual back in the 80's.
They tinted the windows and put B45 Simmons on it. Unfortunately the car was stolen and never seen again.

The XF Gia had the shiny snowflake wheels. The ones on this car appear to be the machined grey that were on the EA Sports Pack edition. Sorry to be that guy, I had an XF Fairmon that I spent my weeks wages and a set of XF Gia snowflakes

Lol the EA was the last of the series to have ashtrays and cigarette lighters in the rear doors. I had a Fairmont Ghia my friends used to joke it was the smokers edition not that anyone was allowed to smoke in it.
