Lalo n ung finals ng grandslam year nila.. .. up to now SMB pa rin fav.team ko.. Win or lose.
what a joy to watch mon fernandez, hector calma, yves dignadice, samboy lim playing together. haay nostalgic moments.
Hector Calma talaga, the playmaking talent. Best point guard.
As an American who grew up in the Philippines (and someone who loves the game of basketball) Joe Cantada and the 80's and early 90's PBA were some amazing memories. I remember going to one of the games at the ULTRA and getting pelted by the octagon 2-peso coins that the fans rained down on the court when the refs made a questionable call against Ginebra(or whatever team was frequented by the "Big J". I remember the infamous Anejo walkout (I was a huge fan of Shell)--Rudy Distrito broke my heart the following season.
And while I liked going to the games, I also loved seeing them on TV and listening to one of the great sports voices of all time. Cantada
One of my favorite lines from Joe Cantada, "Samboy Lim, the dragon belching fire through his nostrils..."
Another one, "Alan Caidic/or Ronnie Magsanoc with an ICBM"
"Smoking Joe" was a rare treat.
Historical Perspective Wow, I grew up here in the USA (Filipino American) and went to live in the Philippines in 1988. My grandparents had season tickets to the Washington Bullets my favorite team. When I heard Ennis Whatley ( Starting point guard along with Moses Malone with Bullets 1986-87 ) was replacing import Keith Smart, I couldn't believe it. My grandfather took me to see Whatley's first game in the PBA at the Ultra and he was so smooth and made it look so easy even against the other imports. I then saw him and SAN Miguel win the grand slam in 7 games against Anjejo. I talked to Ennis after the game telling him he should still be in the NBA....Sure enough, he played for the Portland Trailblazers along with Clyde the Glyde, and Terry Porter just a few months after winning his first ever Championship in his long Pro basketball career. He was known as "the journey man".
I used to admire the guy cantada but now that i'm old and hear his commentaries again oh my goodness i just realized that his comments are like being done during a beer drinking spree while smoking cigar, well smokin joe he was
naks
The good old days.
My no. 1 idol best poin guard of all time Hector Calma.
Combination of pba veterans and sophomores. Naalala ko si hector calma, sya ung all time best pba point guard.
I, Taulava, Menk and Alvarado. That was a complete rub
Hector Calma an native Cabalen , and i always lend my ear and remembered it ibang iba ang basketball noon Komatsu fan here muse Tina Revilla opening 1975 correct me if memory lapses always willing, salamat
Hector calma ang galing na point guard
mula noon at hanggang ngayon wala pa ring kupas si the Dean,Quinito Henson sa kanyang analysis...and,Joe Cantada was simply LEGENDARY!!
.... One and only Skywalker ... Samboy Lim .🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Lupit talaga ni Hector pag walang injury. miss this days of fun Basketball✌
Its nice to feel young again....22 yrs younger! Thanks for uploading!
Mula nuon, gang ngayun! San Miguel solid!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Whoever’s doin the voiceover when they make 3 pointers, foul, last 2 minutes is awesome!!

Year 1989 San Miguel Beer team won grandslam champion that year
elegant shot Don Ramon.
This was a decade where watching PBA was like watching the NBA. Commentators are great and the players were giving their all for the title and the love of the game.
17 Years Old Nako Ngayon....
Pero na miss ko talaga Yung Taon Na Yan....
Parang Gusto Kong Balikan...
Hehehe dyowk Lang naman... 🤣🤣😂😂
Can you imagine if Purefoods was able to keep their core: Patrimonio, Codinera, Lastimoso -- plus Asaytono . they could have had multiple 3-peats for sure.
wow.. my idol... hector calma..
Thx for posting! Please more games! Anejo or more San Miguel beer!
the director hector calma
maganda p manood ng pba dati eh....ngaun kc payabangan nlng hahaha...dati kht nsa bhay k lng manood feel n feel mo ung intensity ng laro...solid smb fans here
i miss this SMB lineup
Damn, S.Lim baseline reverse looks like doctor j!
Wow, I am surprised. Kasali pala si Ato Agustin sa Grand Slam SMB, 1989. That looks of Agustin ang nanalong MVP noong 1993 vs Asaytono, nang lumipat ito ng MBA, parang ang laki ng pagbabago ng mukha. In this game, kita talaga na si El Presidente ang pinakamahusay na manlalaro sa kanilang lahat. Parang alagang alaga ni coach si Samboy, di masyadong binababad kasi ang status niya, now you see, now you don't hahaha, pero super galing talaga. Calma was also very quick, magaling talagang point guard.
Elmer reyes side step & lay-up.hector calma d'director' d' jango fr.pampanga.
Very nostalgic pba finals game 30 years, parang nakakamiss yung games dati, example nalang the way games are palyed, the rules of the game, the announcer of the game and the players.
PBA IS THE BEST DURING 80'S AND 90'S
How can u beat this team all superstars players during that time.hahaja.bring back memories
Smb pa Rin hahaja
I hear Quinito Henson, wow I was born 89. Hehe I grew up watching Quinito Henson on PBA.
@loy829 No Ricardo Brown as he was semi-retired around that year due to a heart ailment. He came to SMB in 1989 and was part of the SMB Grand Slam.
Iba talaga galawan ni Calma
Alvin Patrimonio's low post moves are pleasure to watch.
Hector caLma ... Pinaka mataLinong point guard .... kaya pLa tinawag xa na the director ....
"He had his eyes set on playing quality minutes, as it turned out... it was only a quality minute!" - joe cantada on sonny cabatu returning to the bench
The best ever fast break finisher...!! ELMER REYES
Samboy Lim? Score plus a foul.

PBA IS THE BEST DURING 80'S AND 90'S GREAT PLAYERS, COMMENTATORS, COACHES AND EVERYTHING.
The best all-time si El Presidente Ramon Fernandez!
This was the grand slam year of SMB with coach Norman Black. The next conference would feature Ginebra in the finals with one of the greatest scoring imports of all time - Carlos "Red Haired" Briggs. At 5'10" he would average around 60 points per ball game. I was in third year HS and I would never forget Carlos Briggs.
Samboy Lim "The SkywaLker"
hector calma
i dunno about baby dalupan being overrated but having 15 pba titles is something. yes he doesn't have the wizardry of famous coaches like john wooden, dean smith, coach k, bob knight, ron jacobs, etc. but one thing he did best that not all filipino coaches can do is to assemble a "super team" and to play them team basketball.
brings back a lots of memories, those where the days....
6:32 Yves Dignadice's pull up jump shot
kaypee official shoes of the PBA
1:06:00 Commissioner Willie Marcial was then a Score Keeper as mentioned by Smokin' Joe Cantada
To tell you prankly I'm a die hard fan of San Miguel since Mon Fernandez joined the team.
Core of NCC men's team vs core of NCC youth team. Parang gilas men's and cadets if maglaban ngayon ;)
Grabe yung sigawan nung pinakikilala yung 1st five nang bawat team hehe.
Correction, the 2nd championship of the 1989 campaign. The All-Filipino is always the 2nd conference. Their 1st crown of 1989 was the Open Conference (March 5, 1989 - May 21, 1989). This All Filipino Conference was from June 18 to September 3, 1989.
So many Legends! And 2 Groups of National Team playing ...NCC Boys of Coach Ron Jacobs and their Successor the Joe Lipa Boys
@@tommymanotoc6227 pinagsasabi mo
ano po pangalan ng coliseum announcer/barker? :-)
yeah and no body does it better like the smoking Joe Cantanda, tempo of commentating was spontaneous as the game goes.
I just realize how good the commentator are, very fluent english
Ang Galing ni sports anchor Joe Cantada magsalita Ng English very modulated at straight spoken...
Watching 👍
ang lupit maglaro ni hector calma.playmaker.
the director hector
as what the late Joe Cantada had said "we got an overflowing crowd at the ULTRA"...far contrast from the Finals of today's PBA with lots of empty seats!!
ang linaw full hd
3 years old ako neto.😂
Last na Championship nila ung 1994 AFC , nasa SMB na rin si Caidic non pero di sila umubra mapa- Purefoods (Patrimonio & Condinera) Alaska (Jolas) and Sunkist (Asaytono & Solis)
Facing the basket, Mon Fernandez was unstoppable....what he didn't have in bulk, he made up for it with speed and agility. Complete game, can shoot from the outside or take it in strong to the hoop. I think He was more effective when he drove to the hoop. That would set up his outside shot
Grab Yung drive ni El Presidente
wow, 7 players in this video are in the 25 pba greatest players of all time....
It's the original Manila classico games,,, full of intense til Last second of 4th quarter,,, I like Joe smoking cantada the way he anchored these games,,,
purefoods team of 1988 and 1989 was bannered by players played in phl team coached by joe lipa and nucleus of tanduay
Nelson the bull asaytono nasa purefoods pa since 1989.
pido jarencio with a harakiri drive... classic joe cantada commentary hehehe
May mga mala Jordan fade away moves dito si Yves Dignadice😮 Didn’t know he can actually do that. I only watched him in the 90s and he wasn’t effective on offense anymore by then 😢
that running jumper with right knee in front is Boy Sotto's patented shot of Baste during his stint in NCAA we are neighbors where i drove lambretta a tricycle then, the only one in Manuguit, what a word you used Mr Baritone voice john Doe and again and again
I owe a lot of my vocabulary to Joe Cantada
may idol
Chicks really liked the PBA back then. You could hear them scream loudly.
Yves dignadice...
