There is good dubbing in alot of amime I've watched. There is also BAD dubbing as well but I've only come across sthat a few times.
Don't let people options dictate yous it all I got to say. 🤗

Although the heroine has been hit by the witch's aging magic, there is only one way to break the curse, and that is the power of love, which can break any curse.

A reason Howl got his reputation for pestering beautiful girls in the beginning was because he was always looking for Sophie.

Sophie's curse is about how she feels about herself, not necessarily about becoming old. Any time that she's confident, happy, loving, or otherwise not self-conscious (like sleeping), she looks young and beautiful. Normally, she doesn't see herself that way and feels like she's a grandma with no future left (hence the curse's appearance).
In the book version, she's the eldest of 3 daughters and feels she's destined for a mundane life running the hat shop with no chance of being happy. Her story arc is about confidence in herself.

  • @satsuki4646
    @satsuki4646 Před 3 lety +196

Okay so here are some clarifications if you want some! And some fun facts
The reason Howl saw Sophia as young at moments or she became young at moments was because love breaks the spell and they were expressing strong feelings of love so the spell was wearing off. You’ll also notice how she gets a little less aged in appearance throughout the film.
Shooting stars are dying fire demons so if a wizard makes a deal with one they give up their heart in exchange for more power and the fire demon gets to live forever. Neither are allowed to tell the details of this contract but a third party can break it if they themselves are able to find the solution.
Because the demon has the heart the wizard is ofc without their heart which causes them to become evil the longer they are without it. In the book the witch of the waste went too long without it and was truly evil and Howl was on the same path but his old mentor, Saliman in the movie, warns her to find his heart or he’d become just like the witch of the waste. That is represented in the movie as Howl turning into that bird like monster creature thing. Calcifire tells him the more he turns, the harder it is to revert back to a human.
If you noticed in the beginning of the film Howl mentioned how he found Sophie again and it took a long time and that is a reference to her telling him to find her in the future. This part was not in the book though.
Fun facts (from the book mainly):
    - the war was not in the book
    - Sophie has two sisters
    - Michael is a teenager in the book and if I am not mistaken, I think Michael is Black. He is possibly another race but he certainly is a person of color as he is described as dark in the book.
    - Howl spends his time flirting with girls and pretending he’s a musician to get them but he breaks up with them as soon as they like him back. He just likes the chase
    - HOWL IS FROM THE REGULAR HUMAN WORLD. OUR WORLD! He is a Welsh man whose family thinks he studied the occult in college and now just wastes his time and money doing whatever but little do they know he’s in a wizard world as one of the most famous wizards
    - the witch of the waste was taken over by the demon who had her heart and she wanted kidnapped two men, the prince and Wizard Solomon (or Sullivan, I forgot) and uses pieces of their bodies to create one body and wants Howl’s head for the final piece.
She’s also after Howl’s heart because she needs a new one
    - Howl connects the shop to a field of flowers and they open up a flower shop
    - Howl’s kinda cold to Sophie in the books. Always complaining about her being there and touching stuff. He did it in the film but in the book it seems colder to the point where Sophie is sure he doesn’t like her
    - Howl’s real name or at least his regular human world name is Howell!

Remember when she's in Howl's childhood and she yells, "Find me in the future!" as she falls? When she first meets Howl he says, "I've been looking for you everywhere." hinting at the fact that he remembers her and HAS looked for her. Maybe this was on purpose, maybe not, I'm not sure, and it's not clarified. It's still cool to look out for, though.

    @EmphaticNod Před 3 lety +60

Maybe I'm about to offend some people, but... Miyazaki films always have excellent, high-quality dubs that get the spirit and message of each story (which the creator himself would agree is the most important thing), even if the words themselves aren't a perfect translation. The whole sub vs. dub debate is stupid to me, because both are objectively great.
Reading the subs in the original language provides some extra cultural insight at times, but the tradeoff is that you have to divide your attention between reading and appreciating the beauty of the animation on screen - which means that for some people, they're only getting half the experience. I think we can all agree that this is a great shame, especially with Miyazaki films.
So, if you're the type of person who is more moved by words and tone and audio, by all means, watch these films in the original sub. But if you're more the type of person who responds to striking visuals, expression, and body language, you'll probably enjoy the dub experience just as much, if not more (they really are a feast for the eyes!). Honestly, I recommend going back and rewatching each film both ways, just to see which resonates more with you. And don't feel pressured to cater to one group over the other when its impossible to please everyone. Watch them how you think *you* will enjoy them more.
Also, please consider doing Kiki's Delivery Service in the future, when you have the chance. It's very cute ♥

Please keep watching Studio Ghibli movies. They seldom disappoint. They can be VERY different, but always quality. Go back to Nausicaa (make sure you do a subtitled version...the first dubbed version was so horrible Miyazaki almost gave up releasing his movies through American companies! Disney talked him out of that stand and it is thanks to Disney that you see good dubbed versions of his movies). It is amazing. One of his best even if the animation is a bit dated now, it is still gorgeous with music that is sublime. Kiki's Delivery Service is also great. More low key and charming than most. The city that is beautifully and intricately shown in Kiki's is based on Miyazaki's own experience in Stockholm, Sweden.

I love both versions though, and the author, Dianna Wayne Jones, claims that she loves both as well as being very fond of the movie's castle. She said she even had several versions of the castle around her home.

You should just watch movies how you want to watch them and not worry what others think or say. Personally I can't stand most animes I've watched in their original japanese voice acting, I find the culture gap a bit too jarring and alot of the time the voices sound out of place. So yeah, you do you 😊

what i find amusing is, that in japan, alot of people think subs of american/western movies and shows are better than the japanese dub aswell...

Subs over dubs always, no matter what the language is. If for no other reason, then just to get the original vision as uncorrupted as possible since some lines are always changed.

I said it in the video that I let my community pick how I watched it through a vote on my community tab. I can't please everyone since there is so much discourse over which version is better, so I went with the option that my community voted for the most.

  • @redcardinalist

I'm unsure what the "hype" as about "Howl's Moving Castle" was as it's not a very good Gibli movie. It's not terrible, but it's Gibli on its delcine, what with it's overuse of settings, scenes and charcacters we've seen already.
For far superior Gibli movies, I suggest "Kiki's Delivery Service" "My Neighbour Totoro", "Spritted Away", "Laupta" "Whisper of the Heart" and "Only Yesterday".
Doubleplusgood to you though for watching the original Japanese language version and not the abysmal Disney English version. please avoid these lik the plague.
Enjoyed your reaction! Please do more and...subbed :)
