(Almost) PERFECT SCULLING TECHNIQUE - I have never seen anything like that

  • Recently I have used the term "perfect" quite a bit, I know that. However, the boats and rowers featured, were and still are superb. Today's Athlete is Guus Molle from @WedstrijdroeienW3 whose Coach, Paul Hartog, uploaded this very video. I have never, not once, seen a single sculler so perfectly catching with such delicate shoulder control as Guus.
    Please find here the link to the original footage:

    Please do a “Learn how to row” video. Thank you.

      As I learn about rowing ... there is not just one "learn how to" vid. Rowing as such is simple ... but to transfer the movement into our human body and through our human body needs training, training, training ... and as many don't have the patience, they learn awkward movements, tweak the right technics to their own laziness and then end up in a mess (e.g. even damage of own body). You can make a single video about feathering ... and another video about training methods how to learn correct feathering. And so on .... rowing is to learn in small steps, over years, by milages and milages on the ergometer (bad weather/winter training) and in the boat. And there are many different concepts out there ... from coach to coach, from club to club, from country to country (e.g. Italian, British, German, Dutch rowing style). Take your time to study ... read books, watch different videos/youtube channels ... as you need to find your own way through all this, as its your body (individual physiognomy), health condition, fitness level and mental state. So there is no "one single video" about how to learn rowing. Good luck ! :-)

    Yes, please do a beginner’s video of body mechanics please. If you have done it since this comment, may I please have a link? So appreciate you teachings. I’m a beginner at home with a C2 and so appreciate learning how to protect and be efficient with my body. Thanks 😃

    I would like to introduce to you the ‘PowerPoint’ this is what makes this rower great!
    When the blades are around the perpendicular point, he has still left half of his legs and his upper body
    All the energy is growing into boat speed!
    I completely agree with the round movement around the oarlocks! In my trainings I put the rowers at the PowerPoint (when the hands come together) and let them feel that all the power they have can be put in at that point.
    I then let them build up to this PowerPoint
    Does this makes sense??
    Greets,
    Rob Kluvers

    A learn to row would be great. I've seen an experienced coach working on a group of complete novices and was amazed how he was able to reduce the rowing stroke to just a couple of words and made them row together within minutes. So, I'm very interested in your approach, doesn't need to focus on simplicity. Thanks for your refreshing thoughts on rowing.

    The catch is perfect because he is totally relaxed in making the right connection with the water. He is paying attention first of all the catch and then pull back in my opinion his upper back it’s not an issue

      @Yan-bs5qf Před 5 měsíci +1

      I fully agree. Aram over analyzes the stroke. Nobody while rowing could possibly think about all that Aram is saying.

    • @profiskipinternational4402
      @profiskipinternational4402 Před 23 dny

      @@Yan-bs5qf As I see it rowing is also mind work (on land). You need to visualize the correct movement in advance, before you go into the boat. This is for any kind of sports either its Judo or ski jumping or diving ... Look at the legendary British and American university rowing (Yale, Harvard ...), They even use water tanks with big mirrors to give the rowing students the chance to analyse own movements, without all the shaky instable issues of the boat and nature influences. Its the question what you expect from rowing ?? Do you just want a relaxing time out in nature, being imperfect ... just moving around a boat, every stroke is missing the correct movement. Or do you want become a master rower, steadily learning and become competitive in rowing events ? Everybody can find in rowing his/her own joy and attraction, and there are all kinds of motivations behind to row (e.g. escaping from daily stress, training self discipline, adventure, team work etc ....). Aram in my understanding has his own approach, and builds up his own knowledge (also as CZcamsr). Yes, its very technically, and its very analytical, if not saying: intellectually. But that's him, and its OK. Find your own path, find your coach you feel well with. I learn a lot from Aram's videos, as my brain needs the food, as many, many questions pop up while I sit in the boat and I notice that things are not working (Rec.: I don't train in a club, I am learning DIY in a coastal rowing boat with sliding rig (VIRUS Turbo II skiff)). So long things are working, a brain is lazy and not asking. Right ? We learn by mistakes, by failing. Yesterday I had first rowing on absolute flat water, with zero wind (mostly not happen in NL). Water surface was like a mirror. And it was the worst training unit I had while I got it more easy and right when it was windy, wavy, choppy. So I have to find the answer: Why ? Why I struggle so much in best conditions ? And I have already some theories about ... so now I have to proof whats behind. Good luck ! - Happy Rowing, most important, we have fun, isn't ?

    The best technique I saw was Aram on the BioRower 😁
    I remain unconvinced by the adoption of shortening of the finish to smaller boats, especially the single. The smaller the boat the greater the emphasis finishing correctly IMHO, as it takes longer to build up the momentum through the drive.
    To me this sculler is nothing special. The placement is slow, presumably to protect the lower back as it initiates the drive. He has good connection through the mid drive but the contribution from the shoulders and arms is reduced as the finish is sharply protracted, but the 'benefit' is that more of the momentum from the athlete is transferred into the boat (demonstrated by the pronounced bounce of the bow at the release) rather than being absorbed and redirected outwards as it normally would be using a more traditional finish.

    Hi Aram,
    Just a comment - having music in the background is distracting (in my humble opinion). It does not elevate your message. I feel the discussion is better with no accompanying music.
    Thanks for listening.

    Careful!……..bodysize, relevant strength for weight, relative flexibility etc etc. Height / weight / build ratio?? All these variables mean sometimes even World and Olympic champs may not be technically perfect scullers…..so who is perfect??!!!

    You are far too critical of the "linear erg". Where I row, the season is around 6 months before the snow flies and water freezes. I use a Concept 2 in the off season for fitness and to ramp up as the rowing season nears. In a perfect world I'd go somewhere warm for the winter and keep rowing. When I get back on the water in the spring, it takes me one session to re-establish my connection to the oars and the boat. Your Bio Rower is a great machine, no doubt, but in every video I watch there's a moment where you criticize the erg and promote the benefits of the bio rower and it honestly is starting to remind me of an infomercial. There's probably not a single world champ out there that does not use a Concept 2 erg or similar for some of their training.
    I do enjoy your videos other than that however.

      Look at the injury rates of aspiring high performance rowers, talk to all world champions before you make your claim. Things I say are usually carefully observed and said for a good reason

    • @zzpotato1
      @zzpotato1 Před 5 měsíci

      @@AramTraining thank you for your- somewhat curt -reply. Are those injury rates directly attributed to the erg? I know that many younger competitive rowers suffer back injuries related to sweep rowing- for obvious reasons. There are many areas in any training program where an athlete could sustain an injury. I'm not sure I'd blame the erg the way you do though. I have no doubt at all that your bio rower is an excellent machine. I would love to have one at our club but it's not realistic to get a fleet of them for off-season training.
      Anyway, my critique was more about your videos increasingly turning into infomercials for the bio rower. Your older videos seemed more focused on the subject at hand. I enjoyed those much more.
