  • A drone operator encounters a UFO.
THE OCCUPANT is used with permission from Hugo Keijzer. Learn more at hugokeijzer.com.
Galkina is a drone operator sergeant on duty when she gets an alarm. As part of a secret military program hidden from the public, her work uses nuclear-powered drones to lure alien objects into orbit, and then immobilizes and captures them.
But when one such object is lured to earth and takes the bait -- and Galkina loses her connection to her commanding officer -- she is forced to make decisions quickly, and questions just what is real and what is not.
Director Hugo Keijzer, along with writer Phil M. Howe and producer Maurice Schutte, have created a superbly crafted, dynamic and suspenseful sci-fi thriller whose storytelling grabs viewers from the first moment and holds their attention with expertly calibrated suspense and drama.
Though there are references to "alien objects," the short doesn't lean on any VFX work or explore deep philosophical territory, like many sci-fi films. It's really a propulsive piece of cinema, combining muscular camerawork, an effective score and precise performances to put us in the moment of Galkina's crisis, navigating her dilemma right alongside her.
Essentially the story is one suspenseful sequence, but it centers around one split-second decision that must be made in the most perilous of circumstances. The writing gives us just enough information to understand what Galkina is facing, but like her, we're only privy to what we've been told. When she loses her connection to her commanding officer -- and another voice enters the fray, one that contradicts her understanding and training -- she must decide quickly what to do, and essentially whether or not she can trust what she is seeing. Her decision treads the line between safety and possible catastrosphe, but it's not an easy one to make.
The ending moments of THE OCCUPANT give rise to a mystery and concern that clearly is designed to intrigue viewers and pique their ongoing interest. The title, of course, gives away that this is the opening salvo of a much larger story, and the ambition and scale of the production clearly are feature-level, beginning with the opening wide-view shots of a foggy, mysterious landscape. But as a self-contained piece, it also does its job well: it portrays one narrative dilemma with panache. But solving one problem opens up a whole other realm -- and draws viewers expertly into a whole world of danger and intrigue that they will likely want more of.

I need an explanation! Ok, so she tries to lure a UFO (probably aliens) with a nuclear drone into the radius of an EMP blast in order to knock it down. However, the UFO takes control over the comms, acts as her commanding officer and tells her to fly to the military base and to not turn on the EMP. She follows her orders not knowing she is talking to an immitation of her CO. She is then told to "crash?" into the base (so everything there goes nuclear), but at the last second she decides to not follow the order, tries to fly away but loses control (she also spots another flying object on her radar). Everything goes black, the drone crashed into the woods (but did not explode), suddenly the real CO breakes into the bunker and tells her everything is ok but that the voice she was talking to was not him.... Ok so until that point I kinda understand but what happens after just confuses me. What was the last thing the saw on the radar? Was it the civilian helicopter? If it was then why did it speak english and who's voice was it at the end? Why did everthing go black when she lost control of the drone? Did the EMP go off? Did the UFO crash? Was that it's plan? why? Could it be that the REAL CO told her to crash in order to stop the alien from taking over the world?

Not too sure about why everything went black (very curious) but I don't think the EMP ever went off b/c we never heard the order nor see her press the button she was ready to press earlier. Then the officer tells his superior (not sure ranks/rank names) there was a civilian helicopter that took off + crashed and later confirmed that there were no survivors. The voice we hear is meant to be one of the occupants of the helicopter broadcasting on (I assume) all channels, saying that she survived that crash and needed help. (Ofcourse we know by that point that it's the alians luring people in) and the last thing we hear is that someone answered her /it's call. Please make a movie

Her Major saw what was happening. It was too late to do the EMP. He decided to crash the drone into the base to kill the aliens. The helicopter crash was a coincidence and in the end when you hear the base reply to Danny in the helicopter, it is the aliens who have now taken over the base. The voice telling her to crash was undoubtedly the alien. Russian speakers elsewhere in these comments have noted that the choice of words the alien uses in particular, beyond breaking from professional vocabulary, is particularly personal and emotional, in a way that her superior would not speak even in such an emergency. Plus, the voice brings up her family right after she glances at the photo of them (which was, before this point, not important and not shown), heavily hinting at some supernatural element to the voice.
In any case we can probably take the conclusion of this film at face value because the feature film focuses on Danny and not the Russians
Nonetheless the fact that we can speculate such just goes to show how great this short is

I think that the helicopter portion of this short got added is a preview for something else. Ohhhh wow it makes so much more sense now. This short was written backwards. They started with the ending already set in stone - a helicopter crash in proximity of aliens (the setup for the longer feature you mentioned) - then tried to explain how that could have happened. But they wrote themselves into a corner, because presumably the military doesn't show up immediately at the start of the longer feature. So the characters in this short CAN'T actually make the final plot connection. Hence their inexplicable confusion about the helicopter and vague mention of the aliens being "two steps ahead".

The last remaining audio link was with his general in white house where he told the soldier that the aliens had been defeated and to deactivate the site and let the army inside. he had to make a decision, either let off all the bombs and destroy the aliens and give humanity a tiny chance or open the silo up to what could be aliens impersonating humans.

They thought they were luring aliens, but in fact aliens who could even read their thoughts and mimic human language were luring their drone and established contact with sergeant Galkina under the guise of her commander and tried to direct the drone to human base, but at the last moment "real" humans "helped" Galkina to understand that she was being fooled. Still humans downed a civil aircraft in an attempt to destroy a UFO. The last two voices are: English-speaking woman - survivor of a helicopter crash, English-speaking man - an alien, mimicing now English language, "happy" to locate the survivor by her SOS-message and destroying the rest of the helicopter debris where she is in a final scene, probably to kill the unnecessary witness. A lit bit oversophisticated and obviously unrealistic plot, but that's it.

"Realistic" science fiction movies are very rare, and this is quite close to it. The only thing I would criticise is that there would not be a single operator sitting isolated in the woods.

Russia has no law that allows soldiers to ignore unlawful orders. I would like to see the rest of this movie play out in their equivalent of a military court debating whether or not she should be punished for insubordination. She chose to ignore what she believed to be her commanding officer, but is that a criminal offense if the commanding officer was impersonated?

Can someone explain to me, what the helicopter had to do with all of this? All I can think of right now is that the helicopter crashed and the ailiens contacted it or that the helicopter was crashed by the ailiens but what does that have to do with the base?

    • @wshaffer79
      @wshaffer79 Před 4 lety +6

Perhaps since the aliens failed to recruit the drone operator, they moved on to the next available target, a civilian helicopter pilot.
