  • It's always interesting viewing the final game of any dormant or extinct franchise. Some are able to wrap things up on a strong note while others release an underwhelming title and fade into oblivion. Here, we have one such game with Red Faction: Armageddon. The question must be asked though: Is Red Faction: Armageddon really that bad?

I mean, the unicorn that shot a beam of disintegration out of it's butt was hilarious good times. Building destruction was on another level in this game.

Armageddon was my favorite! Missed playing it. The Red faction series was doped back then

Curious if they will ever bring it back, but who knows since Volition no longer exists.

I kinda love and hate Armageddon. On one hand, it’s certainly a shift back to the more linear gameplay of the first two games. The aesthetic is a great mix of high tech and industrial chic, and some of the gameplay elements are really neat (like the nanorifle being just a standard part of your kit). But then you spend most of the game fighting bullet sponges who do tons of damage, you have very little ammo, and the bugs jump around way too much and die way too slowly. The game is also ridiculously unstable on modern windows, with frequent C2Ds, and a frequency to hitch even on my relatively new laptop.
It’s a shame, because it could have been great, but it feels like the game was haphazardly made.

The big issue I had was the drab visuals and boring level design, especially in the early underground missions. The focus on aliens was also a strange choice given how they were never a focus or really mentioned in prior games.

@@Powerhouse1 It is an odd way to end a franchise that was typically abouyt rising up against oppressive overlords. It's also a weird pivot to have the EDF turn into some sort of weird alien-worshipping cult. While I do agree the game looks pretty drab, I also have to point out this was't uncommon in the era when Armageddon came out, and that while there were standout games that didn't all blend together into a mushy blend of grey, brown, and green; it was the exception, not the rule.
Honestly, I'm just glad they didn't give Red Faction the Saints Row (2023) treatment.
