- So Friday afernoon, I heard a knock on the door and there was this little kid out there.. I answered the door and said, what's your name? "My name is Malaki" was his response... He said his dad was at the end of the drive and wanted me to head over.. Finally. Delivery day for my Workhorse 1975w!!
While Malaki played with lizards in the yard, we unloaded the 1975 and inside 3 minutes we were through the grass, over the garden pavers, and onto the backyard patio. Those wagons wheels already came in handy!! Afterward Malaki and his dad took a quick pic of me next to the new pit and headed off for Tampa to make another delivery. Thanks for the painless delivery guys!
There isn't a whole lot of information or video's online for these pits, so I thought I'd share my experiences putting one to work. This was a quick video thrown together with no music or audio really.. Just wanted to get it out there.. If the video gains interest, I'll continue adding episodes focusing on different cooks and how the pit handles them, while also spending some time talking about the unique aspects of the Workhorse cookers.
Hope you enjoy the video and feel free to drop any comments. Like and subscribe if you'd like more Workhorse 1975 video's.
Thanks!

It is fantastic to see a Great washing and clean of the cooker, It is a standard practice of mine on all my smokers. Cheap Insurance and I care about the people we feed. I Think This is well worth the time and Long life of the cooker. I choose to Bore small holes on the barrel hinges for easy Oiling. I oil inside my firebox all the time. Great Video and Great Looking cooker.
Very nice, well made cooker! Lots of great times to come.
Nice puppy! Ridgeback👍
That’s a really nice looking pit!
Thanks for the video. My 1975T is supposed to start production this week. Will be going through the same process.
How did yours turn out?
great SEASoning video ! cant wait for more
Awesome looking smoker!! That thing is a beast! Congratulations on your new backyard toy👍😉
It reminds me of a gigantormous Tonka Toy... Super chunky.
Piece of art !!!!
Great video...thanks for posting! I've got a 1975 ordered that is scheduled for production in September, and am starving for videos of set-up, and cooking. You did a great job, and I'm planning on doing the same clean-up prep you did. Thanks again, and keep them coming!
Pete when is yours going to be delivered?
@@steveguzman6640 I picked mine up on October 8th. It’s awesome! I only had that weekend to season it, and smoked some chicken wings and bacon. The build quality is great. I’m contemplating attempting to try a CZcams video, but I’ve never done one and don’t know a lot about editing, etc. Thanks for asking!
Make a video don't worry about editing it. I never do just roll with it. I would love to see the smoker in action. I wish I could see one in person?
Nice pit 🔥🔥🔥 congrats🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks Boss! I enjoy your video's very much... keep up the good work !!
Gotta be honest, for $3k that should be cleaned up far better. I have one that starts production in early Dec. I hope it's not snowing on delivery day! Thanks for sharing.
Unless they did a season burn that’s the only thing I can think of.
@@noahkraft6453 Still have to deliver to the customer cleaned up. It's a high quality pit. Should be delivered in perfect condition, especially if you have to wait 6 months for one.
Im glad some one thinks thats worth 3 grand. Allen at county BBQ. Well just talk to Him .
@@LUCKYB. link please?
Keep us updated.
I'm waiting for my delivery in October. Can't come soon enough.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to share with us. Love the 1975. I'm meticulous like this also. If the welds are solid, WGAF if they did a burn in and left some in the pit. Live fire is about rolling your sleeves up and getting down. Don't like it? Get a pellet pooper...
I can tell you my 1975 has the best welds I've ever seen.
@@darrenc3895 How long have you had your pit? I have swapped back and forth between direct and reverse flow...
@@WookieLove1 I got it in May. You won't regret.
Curious how the main chamber drains. Do you have enough room to hang a bucket on the drain?
They look like nice smokers and then they sit around more then you ever use them taking up space in the garage.
Im surprised their QA allows that to roll out with material and the sputtering from the welding process. I guess since its just a smoker it's held to a lower standard
Nice video. After using your cooker for for a few months now how do you like the 1975 wagon? I'm trying to decide on either the wagon or standard model. It do like like being able to roll it around in the grass. What are your overall thoughts on the pit itself and how well it works?
I'm going to be ordering one my self how do you like it so far?
Hello! Thinking about getting into the offset world. Coming over from a Kamado Joe. Is there any particular reason why you do not get your coal bed started with charcoal first? Just curious as to why you start yours with just wood. Thanks!
What’s the overall depth with the 1975 including the wheels?
Awesome Smoker!
I’ve spent a lot of time researching high-quality craft smokers, and I believe this one is the absolute best as far as backyard smokers go. I really enjoy your videos! I’m making a smoker and I’m curious about a couple of measurements on this one:
1. How wide is the cookdoor opening? It looks like 40 inches?
2. How wide is the trim piece that goes around the edge of the cook door? is it 1 1/2 inch wide?
3. What is the frame of the cooking grates made of? It looks like half inch solid square bar.
4. How wide is the cowboy door opening?
5. How tall is the cowboy door opening if you measure along the curve of the firebox instead of a straight line?
6. How far apart is the upper cooking grate from the lower cooking great?
7. What’s the distance from the top of the cook chamber to the top of the firebox?
8. How tall is the hole that lets smoke in from the firebox? It looks like it’s half moon shaped with a straight line across the top of the hole maybe 8 or 10 inches tall in the center?
Thanks for showing us your awesome smoker!
I've been eyeballing these pits and "The Babe" from their sister company primitive pits. You'd think for what they charge for these things (well over 3 grand) they'd clean up all that stuff you scraped out before shipping ..... still a quality product, I'm just being picky... thanks for sharing your video.
Agreed. Frankly, I don't spend this much money on a pit all the time and I wasn't expecting all that welding slag or plasma dross or whatever it is... That said, once I saw it, I had to get it out. And it didn't take that long.. maybe an hour or so, of scraping and grinding, but yeah, I agree, it would have been better if it were cleaned out before delivery. On the other hand, when you buy anything of quality, a nice boat, a car/truck, an rv, there are always minor defects in need of correction and I chalked it up to that...
@@jbmia9745 no that’s bull crap, you don’t see this with LSG or Shirley fab. You should have called them out on there sloppy work
They send them out spotless, but if you they ship it across the US for beans with a Uship driver, the drivers don't clean anything. Workhorse has their own driver who was supposed to deliver mine, but they are behind on shipping. It took me 10 minutes and its the most beautiful thing I've seen and cooks like a dream.
Hey I'm building a pit and was wondering if you could do an in-depth video that shows how the front and back wheels were done? Maybe some close ups?
Call Workhorse Pits? Ask them.
Most people I see oil the outside as well, for protection?
So a brand new Work horse smoker was delivered like that with scale build up inside? They dont clean them before delivery?
Its a metal shop. That metal falls in driving across the country. Mine was not too far off but they say that in their owners manual
How easy is it to upgrade the wheels? 😅
Is that a Rhodesian Ridgeback? Cool!
What are the measurements of the wheels? Like from the outside of one side to the outside of the other.
Didn't have a tape handy, but they're 16x6.50-8's.
wow, great video, thanks for sharing. This maybe a stupid question but dud you use beef talo on just the inside or outside too?
Thanks! Tallow (from Brisket trimmings) on the inside, Raw Linseed Oil on the Outside... I used Sunnyside Corporation 873G1 Pure Raw Linseed Oil, Gallon.. from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BZYYJC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Tallow or any other animal or vegetable oil will have a tendency to get sticky and attract dust and dirt. Linseed oil (aka, Flax Seed Oil), is a drying oil that with heat and time will eventually dry to a hard protective surface. Careful though with Boiled Linseed Oil, which includes solvents to speed the drying process.. not bad for the outside, but I'm a bit cautious and went with pure Linseed oil to avoid any cross contamination.. Many don't find this an issue. Good luck!
@@jbmia. Got it, Thank you for your response! I’m gonna do the same when mine arrives
Nice looking pit!!!! I have one on order as well. I didn't see it but does yours not have a exhaust damper on top?
Yes. It does.
@@jbmia9745 Awesome! I was worried they might not be putting them on anymore. Enjoy and thanks for the video.
@@tmalone893 Yeah, I think its necessary given the design of the folding chimney.. also serves as a kick stand.
Hey how’s the cowboy firebox door holding up? Has it warped at all?
Nope. Solid. The metal is thick enough and the firebox is large enough that it'll hold an oil seasoning (linseed/flax) without burning off... so, definitely no warping.
Is there a little cavern behind the smoke stack pipe in the smoke collector? That's kind of what it looks in the video. Also, what's the size of the collector opening from the main chamber?
On the 'cavern', I suppose you could say there is.. the stack comes down into the collector, but most of it is cut away, only leaving a small slice. This remaining piece of the stack projects down into the collector, leaving a small space behind it. The collector is pretty much the entire width of the smoker.
@@jbmia9745 wow. I wonder if that back area serves any sort of purpose or whether it just wasn't important enough to close off?
Nice vid what was the wait time after paying to delivery?
Dates are detailed in another reply below but it was approx mid-March to early August ‘21. I did add the Wagon option after the initial order, but that didn’t seem to negatively affect the timeline.
@@jbmia9745 thank you 🙏🏽
My production date of Feb seems like forever away.
Nice grill, BUT for me if I'm paying almost 3 grand for a damn grill the manufacturer better have it cleaned and ready to go when I get it. That was a lot to do for a grill at that price. But it is a beast
Awesome work, how thick are the walls ????
3/8
Do you live in Puerto Rico?
awe, floofer in the background. Is that a Rhodesian Ridgeback? Thanks for the vid. This is one of my top contenders for backyard pits.
Yes, it is! He's a good dog. He knows when it's cook time. He always gets some trimmings.. BBQ day is a good day for everyone. ;-)
@@jbmia9745 haha. I bet! Same around here for my 3 poochies
Hmmm 🤔 I don’t think that
Is necessary or even what JD would recommend doing for seasoning a bbq pit. Coat with high point lard or oil and get a nice fire and then start cooking is how to season.
Where can I buy a 1975 workhorse pet I live in Michigan can you help?
How many gallons is this?
I think it's around 90-95 gallons. You can check the measurements on their site and calculate an exact number, but it's somewhere I around there I believe...
Hey all that money and that's the way they send them out to you really
They season it before it goes out to make sure it works like it's supposed to. You guys cry over a lil but of seasoning scale
Incorrect sir. I created the video and can assure you that the interior of the pit did not come seasoned and that it was not seasoning scale. I'm not a metallurgist or a welder, but the scale was definitely metallic and appeared to be a by product of manufacturing.. plasma cutting or welding.. Not crying as I really didn't have an issue spending a couple hours cleaning out and seasoning the pit. Just pointing out the facts. It's of course up to viewers and potential buyers to conclude if this extra cleaning would have been an issue for them. The PIT is an excellent pit and JD and team are doing a great job under the pressure of heavy order volume. Like any manufacturer, there are bound to be hiccups here and there.. especially with a new product.
Best burn in video of the 75 I've seen yet, and I've been doing my homework. I'm already sold on getting one when I can...but that draw sound...Fk me. Was it doing that at 250?
People ott to watch how the make charcoal .
Soap in the pit ???????
Sure. Just like seasoning a new cast iron or carbon steel pan.
Why are you having to do all that to a $3,000+ pit?
Interesting to see how quickly rust appeared on the bare metal. However, it is bare metal, so maybe I shouldn't have been surprised.
Also, no need to put -'s on a word to make it plural. That makes it possessive. It's just "videos." Like "cats and dogs" or "cars" or "socks," etc.
Lol, really dude???
