Reliving my days as a young foreign PhD student in the early 70s at the University of Ibadan (UI). Just before the time of Fela's concert at UI there had been a student protest and the police had stormed the campus. Many students fled. Some challenged the police and threw home made bombs. The big day for the concert arrived. We took our seats early as we'd been told the place would be jam packed and that Fela, typically, did not arrive early. We sat for hours waiting. Then the bandsmen turned up and took their position on the stage. They spent an inordinate amount of time tuning their instruments. Everyone in the hall grew impatient and began to hurl insults at them. Some threw objects. Then hours later, Fela arrived. The minute he started to play, all was forgiven. We got up from our seats and started to dance. It was electric!! Right bang in the middle of the song the music stopped. We wondered what happened. The lights were still on. Then Fela looked around, from right to left and said "Look at you...foolish students. You see police you run. You see Fela you throw stone!". Before anyone could say a thing, he continued to sing and.. well.. .everyone returned to dancing.
Such a gifted musician. RIP Fela.
Those were the days of the oil boom. Nigeria rocked. We pray for the peace of that fascinating country.

When I was in university at IFE now called OAU, Fela used to come regularly to give lectures especially during the Student’s Union week.
In the evening he will then do a concert where he always played new materials.
When I then moved to London I had the pleasure of attending the 2 of his last concerts he held.
I feel honoured having met him in person and even having a picture with him closest to a selfie in those days.
