  • Today we're talking about the difference between CinemaDNG and DNG Raw still photos on the DJI Inspire 2 and Zenmuse X7 camera. Download the DNGs here: bit.ly/2NyLDUR
Stills and video obviously have different applications, but there are specifics between using RAW still and video formats and their benefits and drawbacks.
As we discuss in this video, the two formats are very similar and both perform exceptionally well, however CinemaDNG remains king for fast action, while stills require no license and introduce less sensor cropping.
    Thanks for watching!

Question: I converted a short ProRes RAW clip to CinemaDNG (on my MacBook Pro running Monterey 12) that was shot on my Nikon Z6 that I want to Color Grade in DaVinci (which I have yet to installed on my new ProArt laptop (running under System 11)
The output is _000001 thru _000299.dng files - each 8.4MB - so are they meta-files that are imported into Resolve as a “group”??? If not, what’s the next step in processing this - single - video clip?

Usually importing the first *.dng as an image sequence or video file should implement the other 298 automatically. Premiere can import image sequences, and Resolve should see the set of files as one clip. Sometimes even 299 copies of the same clip - you obviously only need the first, in that case.

Yes, I’ve since tried it and the process brings them across frame-by-frame

All fine, but you canìt import DNGs into Premiere, while you can with the CDNGs. I've undestood that it's related to the exif information of the file, but I don't know wich one is, do you ever tried? Nice video tho

You could import them as an image sequence, if not, there are ways around it (Adobe After Effects, or processing them through Lightroom)

Awesome! Haven't tried CinemaDNG yet but I can do it on my on my Shogun, file sizes are out of this world, maybe I'll give it a test soon.
I assume this is how some artists do "Levitation" Photography.

Hahaha! Just roll CDNG and toss something up, find the frame in post. 😂
Yeah it’s huge, we get 15min on a 480GB card. I feel like ProRes Raw is probably a good compromise between the two, honestly.
