- A question older than time itself, which is faster? A road bike on the road, or a mountain bike off-road? To find out we went to Snowdonia National Park with the new Garmin Edge 530 and Edge 830. Will the more direct off-road route be faster than the longer but smoother road route? Watch now to find out!

The objective; find some welsh cakes before racing to a picturesque picnic spot underneath a waterfall. The riders; are our very own Neil Donoghue, and the contender, Hank from GCN. The routes (planned with Komoot); Neil will be taking on a 16-mile off-road point to point, stopping off to get welsh cakes on his way to the waterfall; Hank will have 34 miles to cover, picking up the welsh cakes before doubling back on himself to get to the finish. The new Garmins feature MTB Dynamics, technology that measures your airtime, the difficulty of your ride, and rider skill (known as Grit and Flow). Rider-to-rider messaging will help Hank and Neil let each other know when they’ve secured their Welsh cakes. The live track feature will let them know if they need to get a move on!

Is a a road bike really that much faster? Do you think Neil just got unlucky with the boggy sections? Let us know
I think Hank was cheating. He clearly got lifts from the cameraman on a motorbike😂
guys maybe someday you can do a collab edit that gcn, gtn, embn and gmbn can work out. try all discipline and immerse into the differences, maybe blake will enjoy clipless pedals, skinny tires and lycra. and take the gtn and gcn guys to an epic climb and blast down some fire roads. We're never really about racing against roadies. It's all about those panoramic mountain top views. Those flowy trails and rock gardens. The jumps, descents and climbing in rough trails. These are the reasons we're stoked in mtb. Those Garmins are good btw and it's nice of them to sponsor this video.
The flow metric was low for the mtb. Imagine the flow in an megavalanche race. Insane.
Exactly! We aren't always trying to be fast. Roadies (true roadies) are. I saw a stupid thread about road bikes being faster on the road. Well... Yes! Of course. But I can ride my MTB anywhere, including the road. You can't ride a road bike anywhere other than smooth roads.
You can ride road bikes on cobbles and grass as well, it’s just not as common. I’ve ridden my road bike across a 2km field and it was good, also cobbles are great for road bikes. But I love MTB as well, no hate just saying.
@@bananasstuff3344 yeah fair enough

props for the cameraman for being able to run that fast.
Brilliant cross-over. But as someone has already said, you should really mix it up, GCN on the MTB and GMBN on a road.
@Bob Ferguson: I think it would give GCN just more of an advantage: most of them either have a competitive MTB past (Dan, Si) or they have MTBs or gravel bikes at home now. They don't *just* ride road strictly! Whereas I somehow doubt that Blake or Neil are often donning lycra and a 7kg road bike... 😁
Perhaps, but GMBN had to follow the Garmin where as GCN were just riding on a road. That is s big advantage as you are less likely to have a navigational delay. Much of of the off road track would have been difficult to follow without a navigational (Garmin) device.

What a totally delightful video! I got here after seeing Hank and Blake sprint up brutal hills in Bristol in the newly released GCN video. The GCN - GMBM cross-over is pure joy!!
First off...thanks for the video and the spectacular shots. Second...I've only ever ridden road bikes but watching the amazing views from the mountain bike route I can definitely see the appeal. It's like entering another world, while road biking, while basically riding in the same area, is a lot of asphalt and cars. Keep up the great work. I love how GMBN say that Neil got unlucky with the boggy bits, when they set the route that he knows well and Hank doesn't. Good race Hank.
The main advantage of MTB is that you can be acceptable fast on the road and very effective in the rough terrain. On the road bike you would be much faster on the road and that's all ;)
Any 1 by drive train MTB is slow af on road, needs a bigger one up front
Given how aero obsessed roadies are its a wonder you don't ever see more low rider recumbents about zipping by at stupid speeds.
@书中自有黄金屋 Damn... it reminds me of my past experience where I got beaten by an old man riding a road bike. My self esteem was crushed within a km. Not to mention that his pedalling are effortless. Like any sort of biking... why the hate? Bikes are great...
Hank had lots of advantages:
Advantage 1: he was going down a hill at the start but niel was going up a hill.
Advantage 2: he just uses the filming vehicles slipstream
Hank also had a route twice as long as Neil's.
And I very much doubt he drafted behind the camera car all the time: that would be cheating and unsportsmanlike. Now, if *Dan* were the roadbiker in question... But then they would prominently feature his cheating in the video, so it'd be obvious it wasn't a fair comparison! As they have done: see Dan's adventures in e-roadbiking against non-motorized colleagues...
They use motorbikes anyway,
Motorbikes would be better for slipstreaming.
Enjoyed watching you guys ride☺️☺️

Do a city commute? Road bike an the streets and a mountain bike shredding stairs and stuff? Would be dope!!
Before: As much as I hope its the MTB I think it's going to be the road bike.
After: Knew it. ._.
@i,m a horse MTB is for offroad adventures or for really streets or for paths and the main aim of it is to have fun while making some little jumps and bumping over stuff.
The road bike is for streets and there it is of course way faster than a MTB. The fun about road biking is going fast, descending and even going uphill as fast as you can and pushing your limits. Both can be lots of fun and you can choose what you like more? I like the road bike more because I like going fast and pushing me. But the decesion is yours :)
