I don't know how I made it almost 37 years in life without stumbling into the hidden gem known as Jimmy Lafave. But I sure am glad I found him. He's flipped my life upside down and it hasn't even been 24 hours since I discovered it.
Jimmy was not just a great writer, musician and performer...He was a true gentleman...If, you ever talked to him you'd know...He never wanted to talk about music...He wanted to hear about you as a person...It doesn't get more intimate or beautiful than that....I miss you Jimmy RIP
- I met him! on a frozen starry night just like tonight in beautiful New Hampshire. Jimmy did not like zero degrees F, with high winds. It was even cold inside the venue! To meet him was to love him! Too hear him was to get addicted to his beautiful music! i really miss him. Imagine all the great songs he would have written! -
Jimmy would play in the bars at Stillwater ( back in the day) and draw you in from the sidewalk with his soulful singing! Once, while walking down the 'Strip' by Willie's, I heard him singing inside...had to go in! Didn't know who he was until that evening.
Walk Away Renee by Jimmy LaFave popped up on Spotify an hour ago. Now I find myself here, listening to this great artist who I'd not heard of until today. You have to love music....
Bob Johnston produced an album with Jimmy, said he was one of the greatest singer/songwriter/artist ever, as did Townes Van Zandt and my brother Kevin Eggers Tomato Records. Jimmy was and is music majic of the highest degree. One of a kind. RIP Jimmy
Somehow I had forgotten Jimmy and his great music and voice , my memory ain't what it used to be. I watched Otis Gibbs and it was about Jimmy , lord I'm so glad I did. It's been like reuniting with an old friend. I love the way he covers"walk away Rene" I've always liked the song but his voice can make me cry and smile at the same time.
That's funny. I feel that way about John Prine, who, via the youtube algorithm suggested some Iris Dement. Was listening to her and bam! Jimmy Lafave. Damn I'm so grateful for that suggestion. This has been an amazing day acquainting myself with his music
I used to listen to Jimmy back in the day, but I too had forgotten him. I was COMPLETELY taken aback when scrolling through John Prine tributes (my all time favorite songwriter), I came across Jimmy ..Jimmy Lafave!! Oh my heart! My heart literally skipped a beat. This happened about 4 hours ago and I have been listening to him since. 'What's a Sweetheart Like You Doing in a Place Like This' has been one of my favorites of his. His unique voice, his songwriting, his presence ALL make me soooo happy. ❤❤❤ .... yes, still trying to figure out why I lost him in the first place ... ✌❤
I watched this when it first aired back in 1996. So happy to see it again, thanks so much for posting it! There will never, ever be another Jimmy LaFave.
Carry On, dearest JIMMY LaFave ~ in heaven with your angels. Loved taking in your music, dancing always (often alone near the stage) and taking your words and lyrics to the core of my Heart. We all miss you so much .... rest in grace . Your MUSIC lives on . Many Blessings ~
When I lived in Austin, I saw Jimmy perform many times live. His soulfulness was epic- that grandiose word is true in this instance. The most special troubadour. I still miss him. There will never be another like him. This first tune Buffalo Return to the Plains, is one of my favorites. Although I have many favorites. :)
I recorded this on VHS when it first aired because Lisa Loeb was also in this episode. (Lisa's performance was incredible too.) That's how I discovered Jimmy. I wore that tape out. must of watched it a 1000 times. R.I.P. Jimmy.
Miss this great talent, his performances were always so personal, taking requests and so laid back. I wish he had come to East coast more often I always tried to see the shows.
don’t listen to much country, but he honestly sounds very much ahead of his time. a lot of country artists i hear today sound like him. and i prefer his raw take on it, personally.

Went to his show at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley - a joyful noise.
I'm not exactly sure how old Jimmy is, but something tells me his music fits right in with my generation of late 60s, early 70s
Doesn’t get much better than this 🙏🏻
great musician, never had the chance to see him! Rest in peace Jimmy!
Wonderful video. Jimmy put on one of the best shows I've ever seen in Berkeley. Most underrated artist ever.

Gone too soon. I was lucky enough to have seen him in Montreal in a very small club. No one does a ballad like him.
That was our show (Billy Bob Productions) 🙏 Jimmy played for us numerous times. Special soul.

i miss him more than 99% of the people I KNEW who have passed on.
don’t listen to much country, but he honestly sounds very much ahead of his time. a lot of country artists i hear today sound like him. and i prefer his raw take on it, personally.
First heard Jimmy on radio in Houston on the alternative station down their more Americana and Folk style , back in 1995-98 . Not really Country .
Primo Jimmy! Forever man
Just today I found out he left us . . . broke my heart, again. 🙏
RIP Buddy :)
Jimmy's great and RIP. But that dobro at 1:48 is utterly wonderful. Every note counts.
I thought the same way. Every note matters, and goes with the others.
Yeah, is that Will Kimbrough??
I would have paid big bucks to be at this gig.
I saw him at steamboat springs on 6th street.
Great!
Excelente voz country 👍🇦🇷
❤️
Aviat farà dos anys que te'n vas anar, els bons aficionats mai t'oblidarem. Fins sempre, Jimmy. RIP
“One of Texas’ best kept secrets”. How sad

Nothing like showing up on teevee looking like a vagrant to impress your audience.
