I know we only get an edited portion of the meeting with Maisie and Sheila, but Kim was so delicate and kind in how she phrased things to them when discussing her grandfather, when you know deep down she kept thinking "That son-of-a-bitch!"

Back then, when men left women (or got kicked out), they divorced their children too. I once asked my Mom why my father couldn’t have come to get me for visits and she looked surprised and said, “Why would he have?!” It’s the kind of generational divide that leaves a person deeply confused, but it’s like hitting a stone wall. She understood my question as little as I understood her answer.

To be honest I think learning that about them may have answered some of the questions they had when he up and left with the family for Australia and never looked back. To learn that he'd done it before (only without the family the first time) might have given them some closure. And it brought them to Kim, and she to them, so that's one blessing.

I was thinking the same as well. There was a real connection there between Shiela and Kim. Durham is filled with very welcoming and decent people. Turns out Kim's grandfather wasn't one of them. Emigration also tears families apart. The same thing happened with my grandmother, she up and left my own mother - took my mother's brothers and her sister and emigrated to Canada. Some people have no consideration for the feelings of others, particularly relatives. 😳

I can relate to Kims experience with her family history. My grandfather did the same despicable thing. He abandoned my 26 yr old grandmother with 5 children in 1965 to run away with the nextdoor neighbor. He never sent them money or saw them again even though he had the means. I spoke to my other grandma about this recently and she said men back then did that all the time. There were no repercussions for them and no family law to protect the family left behind. My grandma died 20yrs ago and I found out this man is still living as a multi millionaire in Muskoka.

My great grandmother told everyone he was killed in a railroad accident when his daughter was a baby. I can find no evidence of that story in any state. How sad… but it’s reality for a lot of people… Not all families are picturesque as a Norman Rockwell painting… We all have those relatives that are slightly off… Sorta weird tho hearing of her past family members due to her being so famous, we forget their just humans and people like us… I feel really bad for her finding out that he was in another town with a new family thriving… I hope this gives closer to her and allows her mind to rest… 🌅

It is very hard to discover things about our families and ancestors that have been hidden for years. However despite the hard facts that are not the joyful things we hoped we might have discovered, it is at least good to be able to know at a point where we can start to accept and heal as much as possible for ourselves. Understanding is part of healing. To understand we need to know first. That's why family history can be a good way to face the past be it difficult, surprising, joyful or sad. It helps us to appreciate ourselves more.

Just crazy how some men startca second family while still withbthe first.
ONE of My half sisters and I finally met each other (our sperm doner was a bit loose. Went on to have 3 more kids. That we know of).
We decided to do our DNA to find more of our birth family ( fathers side).
In doing so, my sister found out our birth grandfather ( father's father) had children with the neighbor lady down the street. Had approximately 9 with our birth grandmother and 3 more with the other lady down the street. She passed tgem off as her husbands children.
Then here we come along and my sister let them know about everything. (They are all approximately late 60's on up.)
    It's just CRAZY !!!
All this DNA stuff is going to letca LOT of skeletons out of the closet. Unfortunately, some of it may destroy lives.
