- Pokemon Competitive Singles in Gen 3 is where Abilities were first introduced. As requested by famous patron Brian, I'll be ranking all the abilities in Gen 3 in the context of Competitive Singles.
This is insane.
Iron Mugulis and Iron Fellow know all about it. Old Money doesn't know a thing.

Some will never figure out how to get Pikachu in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Pikachu Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Pikachu Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on CZcams. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

It’s strange that you put oblivious and own tempo into the not relevant tier. Lickitung gets both of these abilities and is a top tier mon.
Lickitung is so good it didnt need an ability
Mr Jimothy doesn't want others to steal his secret Balance Lickitung Tropius strats
Slowbro is lowey an S tier mon
Magma Armor prevents Freeze, not crits. Genuinely a nice feature for a Pokemon like Camerupt who takes neutral from Ice.
My mistake. That's pretty good actually
Would have been S tier in gen 1
Makes it a good switch in to Ice/electric Superachi, immune to the electric move and you don’t risk a 20% freeze chance from ice punch, plus it doesn’t risk ice beam freezes from Blissey’s that love spamming ice beam for that 10% chance.
A few romhacks have changed magma armor to prevent crits. It’s pretty relevant for Nuzlockers. They love their battle armor.
Idk if Jim was watching some Nuzlocke channels some day and got his wires crossed there.
Freeze immunity much better for competitive. Actually good for blissey stuff
@@deeznoots6241I wouldn't be shocked if bolt beam superrachi does 50%+
Lightning Rod in Gen 3 is actually useless. All it does is draw in Electric-type attacks in a Double Battle and that's it. No Sp. Atk raise, no Electric immunity, those only became a thing in Gen 5 (same with Storm Drain)
Its a big surprise in the FRLG battle tower lol.
Its useful in doubles because ground types get it.
@@beam5655yeah that’s the thing, this video was ranking these abilities’ viability in Singles
The Droot ability is really critical for Groodon.
Grewdon
lets go Gordon
Trust the Gorton's fisherman
I honestly did not realize there were this many abilities in the gen 3 games. Also being the debut generation for abilities makes it seem even more impressive. This is insane.
Interestingly there’s a lot of redundancy like shell armor vs battle armor, but yes it is amusing how much they cooked up
@@centurionpanocculus those are mainly for lore reason, which ability's name suits the said pokemon more
@@martinketchumhow on earth does that make sense? You can put battle armor on any pokemon with shell armor and it would make perfect sense lore wise.
Battle armour is called Kabuto Armour in Japan and that way I believe it makes lots of sense who does and does not have it compared to shell armour.@@Farrise
Arguing for the sake of argument 🤣 It's a japanese double meaning sure, that doesn't mean they can't make a more generic name for all the pokemon that have an ability that prevents crits 🤣 @@Manivilization
rough skin in UU makes Sharpedo the best offensive check to endure reversal/flail sweepers, in combination with endure by yourself, you can finish off these threats without dying by yourself and if the enemy reads that play they need a non contact move to continue the sweep, which hitmonlee and sycther surely will not have in their moveset. extremely funny it gets when sharpedo uses their own +SpA/Spe berry because they can morph themselves into a endure sweeper too.
Magma Armor doesn't make you immune to crits, it makes you immune to freeze.
Swarm has to be my favorite ability here. Yes, Heracross is insane and one of my favorites, but I think it's funny how starter types get these pinch abilities and for reasons bug gets it, but no other type. Gen 3 always felt like the most quirky gen to me, and I mean that lovingly lol
Imagine if Inner Focus allowed not flinching during Focus Punch.
Effect spore has the potential to be detrimental, as it could trigger poison on a turn where you go for spore, making it a wasted turn and leaving a far weaker status on the opponent, which in the worst case could trigger guts on a pokemon you would've otherwise neutralized.
But also that means it's a pokemon who'd outspeed Breloom, which means Breloom probably shouldn't stay in cuz it's pretty frail. Absolutely a concern for Parascect
@@TheWizardMus while that is true, there are scenarios where breloom could've survived and gotten off a spore, but was stopped by effect spore.
For example, the opponent has just killed your swampert with a jolly choice band aerodactyl using double edge. Knowing that it's locked into double edge, you switch in your breloom, as breloom survives 1 double edge without hazards, and has a 25 percent chance to survive with 1 layer of spikes. Hopping to cripple the opponents cleaner with spore, you click it, as the aero goes for double edge - and unfortunately, it triggers poison. Now, your spore goes to waste, and you can no longer paralyze it to slow it down either.
Obviously, this situation is specific and rare, and there's also the chance that effect spore triggers paralysis or sleep instead. However, I only know it's a possibility because I've seen it happen.
@@isuckatgaming1873 honestly valid, the only situation I could think of off the top of my head is Dugtrio using aerial ace in which case the 10% of a status would be pretty good
@@TheWizardMusCan confirm that exact scenario happened to me recently. Couldn't even KO it Aerial Ace. Then again, it put me to sleep on a turn where it was planning to use Spore, so it wasn't very effective.
Has happened to me before
it’s interesting to see so many staple abilities from later generations that are bad or mediocre by virtue of just having no good users in gen 3-speed boost, rough skin, static, and flame body all come to mind. nice informative video jimothy, very cool
Ey buddy, just wanted to tell you that you're doing a terrific job cranking out all these videos day after day!
You're fun to listen to and to see the first gen I ever played get so popular again has to be your doing.
I salute you mr. Cool!
Ps this is insane.
Early Bird cuts the sleep turns from Rest down to 1, which is handy for something like Kangaskhan. Most everything else that gets the ability is too frail to make use of the quick Rest.
Yes! It’s actually so solid on Kang.
Gen 3 OU has an interesting balance of things that trap and eliminate one another, but without it becoming a rock-paper-scissors meta. Probably, due to the lower overall power level, not resulting in an unfavorable matchup or early play being a guaranteed loss.
definitely helps that half the Pokemon in the tier don't have a BST of 550+ lmao.
Medicham also benefits from the fact that Shadow Ball is a physical move in gen 3. It can use the combo of High Jump Kick and Shadow Ball in order to virtually hit everything at least neutrally. And being able to do that with an Attack stat higher than Rayquaza's is showing how monstruous it can be. It's although let down by its only above average Speed. Even though it's not slow for gen 3 standards by any means.
Ghost and Fighting actually does hit everything at least neutrally in Gen 3. Remained true up to Gen 8 I believe. In Gen 9 Hisuian Zoroark became a thing.
@@ShiningJudgment666I mean Hisuian Zoroark came out in Gen 8 but you can’t use it in online battle in Sw/Sh so like… it’s kinda right in both ways
Really enjoy and appreciate you somehow managing to pump out a daily video for us viewers! I hope you don't feel too obligated to do so. I admire your passion for the gen 3 meta, and your videos exploring all the other gen metas. Keep it up!
I think you can argue that Drought and Drizzle go in banworthy if you're looking it from an OU perspective, as if a non uber had them it would change the entire metagame and warp it around those weathers (especially rain). Similarly shadow tag isn't banned in ubers but is in OU
I think the point is that he's only considering these abilities in the context of which Pokémon actually get them and not theorizing how they would affect Pokémon who don't. Drizzle and Drought would for sure warp ADV OU if they were available, but they're only available in Ubers where they're healthy
@@kadabraguy9846 true!
Always enjoy tier list videos, was a fun to listen to
I'm pretty sure Gen 3 Lightningrod is useless outside of doubles, it doesn't provide an immunity to Electric attacks it just redirects them away from your partner
I think the fact that you didnt select speed boost as amon defying ability is insane
The way the tierlist was structured meant that it not only had to be a mon defying ability, it had to be very impactful. It would be cool if there was a way to separate each tier by mons that can't survive without their ability though
Love all the maplestory bgm, and the video was super interesting and informative too!
Literally googled this two days ago, and here you are posting a video about it. Love all the content, I think it would be cool to see a held item or attacking/status move tier list
held items -
S-Leftovers, Choice Band
A- Lum, Salac
B- Petaya, Liechi, Magnet
C- Starf
i think that's literally everything really. you can throw brightpowder in D.
Woah, 45 minutes of jimothy cool analysis. This bodes well for my morning 💜
Thanks for this video. Now I can watch this while not studying for my exam coming up next week!
Great vid. Respect the choices and now I gotta try a P2 team
I've run Butterfree for the hell of it on the ladder today. It is pretty fun to use and Compound Eyes is pretty great on it.
Pretty good at spreading status, you can expect him to sleep something and maybe paralyze another pokémon, and probably solid at confusing people/doing shenanigans (Skill Swap, Thief, Swagger, etc.)
Just... don't expect to live more than two rounds.
29 years old and i decided to hop back into these games, gotta say the information you give out is invaluable, especially since the last game i played was emerald.
Thank you. This is insane.
Nice video jimbo
An interesting thought about Gengar's levitate, its so useful for Gengar that I would rather have a levitate Gengar over a theoretical wonderguard Gengar. So many mons pack earthquake and with Gengar's lackluster defense, ground immunity is crucial. Also, without levitate, dug could trap and check Gengar.
i don't even play competitive pokemon anymore but you have quite the chill voice to listen to
This tier list Illuminated my day
This tier list was a lot to Water Absorb
like the ability ?
@Jimothy Cool where do you go for the pastebins of Gen 3 teams?
7:47 - 8:07: glad to hear Medicham get praise.
I don’t hear that enough nowadays, don’t think I heard it enough back in the day either.

Truant is so bad that it turns to be good. Entrainment truant Durant can shut anything off
For a turn lol, forces both people to switch
Don’t get me wrong I spammed entrainment Durant in gen 5 but it is impossible to use consistently, it’s literally just to force a switch
Only if durant existed in gen 3...

I think it would make more sense to compare the abilities in a vacuum. Otherwise we are kind of comparing pokemon as much as abilities.
So fun to hear how different people pronounce pokemon names. "Medi-Cam" and "Groodon" stuck out to me for example
more importantly, regarding Inner Focus, the majority of the relevant Pokemon who get it are also just naturally fast and will be outrunning most opponents, meaning getting flinched isn't something they worry about often, if ever.
No way you mentioned Kecleon in Gen3 1v1 LOL
1:40 POLIWRATH MENTIONED 🫡🥹🗿
do you think youd ever do a video where a hypothetical change was made? like what would happen if tyranitar was banned from gen 3 ou? snorlax ban? the rise in none leftovers items? etc
Water absorb is a tier when you run into suicune
The amount of random youtubers I stumble across using Maplestory BGM makes my heart smile 🧡
In Gen 3, Lightning Rod's actually completely useless outside of Doubles (and maybe sometimes detrimental in Doubles?) because it doesn't provide an immunity, it just redirects Electric attacks to the target. Not that it would've mattered anyway, but still.
when i started learning about adv i was like “wtf why doesnt skarm run sturdy” but then i realised that sturdy does not work like a focus sash in gen 3
could you imagine if sturdy worked like it did in current gen in adv? skarm could always get a free spike, even against something like moltres or zapdos lol
I’m hoping for Marvel Scale being in Amazing at least.
Can’t imagine Milotic without it.
Well competitive is also ahood ability for Milotic
Could you please do this on current gen. As a new player I have no clue what anything does and it would be nice to know the meta. Not to do better but to understand what is going on. I'm so lost and haven't found anything to help brand new players. I played during gen 3 but was younger and either I can't remember what things are or I just don't know what is happening and you get DQd on time if you look up too much during the fight. I just need to know, what I need to know.
i've had synchronize backfire on me multiple times while trying to toxic something with umbreon, so it CAN be harmful to you
what? if umbreon toxic a mon without synch it just gets toxiced, umbreon is fine
what i meant by this was, for example trying to toxic a zapdos and they thunder wave the umbreon, umbreon's synchronize procs and paralyses the zapdos, thus making toxic not work
sick idea!
gen 4 ou tier list?
Music name at 17:00 ?
Probably not the video for it but I feel Exeggutor should be a slow bulky offense that can boom, recover and maybe stun spore?
Hustle is also on Corsola and the Togepi line. The former just isn't a great Pokémon in general and the latter with Togetic is much more suitable as a defensive Pokémon using Serene Grace Body Slam.
Funny enough, the best use for Serene Grace Togetic is to you used Ancient Power, hope you get a boost, and then Baton Pass. It’s a cheesy gimmick but that’s all that Togetic can really do
Nah its all about that Hustle Aerial Ace and Swift, Focus Punch and Fire Blast lol
My fave is Rock Head, Aerodactyl is my boy and in gen 3 it helps him be a top threat with a fun idea
35:59 homie am I hearing the forest music from Maple Story??
the fact that Damp prevents explosion from doing anything rather than just negating damage makes sense. You can't ignite a dampened fuse of course.
What did the Heracross say when it got hit by a Flamethrower?

15:25 I think you confused magma armor with shell armor and battle armor, magma armor prevents freeze while the other two prevent crits.
Trace is peak gaming, there’s no other Pokemon/ability that allows the same level of versatility and on the fly playmaking AND it’s on the goat porygon2
I can’t believe you didn’t mention meganium when discussing overgrow smh
That was insane.
Hyper cutter is mon defining as it is what lets Gligar have any literally any usage in OU (please ignore that it is because without hyper cutter Gligar would only have a banned ability.)
can someone please tell me a source for his outro song im begging
Outro source is in the description.
Doesn’t magma armor prevent freezing, not provide Crit immunity?
I am noticing that this ability tier list looks very similar to the pokemon ranking of the best pokemon with the ability.
Surprised you didn't mention Fake Out with Inner Focus, is it really that uncommon in Gen 3?
ive never seen anyone use fake out in gen 3 like ever lol.
@@Blanktester685 It's because Fake Out is really bad in gen 3. It's only +1 priority. So Extreme Speed goes before it.
it has a niche on lead cb medicham. thats it
Love how the power level in gen 3 is just low enough that weak Pokémon with strong abilities like golduck and butterfree can carve out small niches for themselves on teams that benefit from those traits.
Jim: "Don't use this pokemon. It's bad, it doesn't do anything, the use case is so specific that you might as well use something else that does that thing even better while also doing other things. It isn't even a pokemon."

How's sound proof more banworthy than shadowtag?
Mr. Mime is an international criminal
All because of Baton Pass's interaction with Roar
both are, its more a issue of soundproof blocking roar which enables goofy chains. people say exploud should be unbanned but no one really cares cuz its exploud
@@funkymachine what if I do a little bit of whirlwinding

Will always love and respect Keen Eye for fighting back against the Ninjask Nation 🙏
ninjask ban when?
A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Lightning rod is 100% useless in Gen 3 singles. In later generations it gives you electric immunity and a SpAtk boost on hit, but in Gen 3 literally the only thing it does is redirect attacks in doubles. Rhydon and Marowak are already immune, and Manectric just takes resisted damage from electric attacks as usual.
Butterfree is the best Pokemon in gen 3.
Hope to see a video soon.
come on man, you forgot remoraid gets hustle! that surely puts it in the amazing tier
As someone who doesn't know anything, the biggest surprise to me is that Pressure, the placeholder ability for legendaries without any unique ability, is not only useful but in the top tiers.
It's pretty difficult to KO something without PP on the move meant to take something out.
This tier list is ranking the ability in gen 3 with context of the pokemon that uses them. If you were to detach speedboost from ninjask the ability is not a "solid" ability, its a ban worthy one, as evident to what happened to blaziken once it got the ability.
Sharpedo got it in that same generation. The thing is, it's attached to a Pokemon with the attacking stats, the movepool that includes Swords Dance and just good enough bulk which you could invest in in OU. Sharpedo's difference is frailty that even bulk investment can't really fix and lack of Swords Dance.
sharpedo does not get speedboost until gen 5@@ShiningJudgment666
If this ability [Huge Power] is Skill Swapped, copied with Role Play or Traced, the effect is halved, boosting the Attack stat only by a 1.5x multiplier and not doubling.*
Huge power therefore is objectively the better ability out of Huge power vs Pure Power.
If ou had a drizzle and or drought mon, would ttar and sand stream be the anchor of the meta still?
Depends on the Pokemon and how they'd match up against Ttar. Not saying they wouldn't be banworthy though. Ttar is stopped hard by Kyogre and Groudon in Ubers. Kyogre drowns it and Groudon walls and smashes it. If it was on a Pokemon that would lose the ability upon evolution or if they were on something absolutely trash, who knows.
Thanks for the video Jim this is fun to watch! But I kinda wish you ranked the abilities without considering what Pokémon have the ability and just ranked the ability by itself but I guess that’s not the idea of this tier list
Same here, should just be ranking the abilities in a vacuum. What if only caterpie got huge power would it be a bad ability all of a sudden? It would just suck that it's only avaliable on that mon, the ability itself would still be amazing
Was going to say the same thing

Wait a second...
Also Sharpedo's rough skin is pretty useful in UU because of all the endure salac reversal spam, it's pretty "common" there
just use umbreon as a wish passer wall with pursuit on a team that has another heal bell wall. its unbreakable no matter if physical or special and just continues giving value while also destroying gengars.
Why was this in alphabetical order excerpt for Color Change and Compound eyes just randomly at the end
Hyper cutter is relevant. Intimidate is so common.
This is insane
I think one slept on thing for snorlax is running thick fat instead of immunity because everyone expects you to run immunity.
See I always run heal bell/aroma support w snorlax so toxic on curselax a) isn't relevant because it's a good last mon b) as a stand in for a special wall on bulky, offense teams next to regice and maybeeee hariyama. Magneton becomes mandatory, usually HP grass mag but you're gonna blow up on swampert with something most likely on those kinda builds anyways so slotting in 3 moves on mag to fill in gaps doesn't have much of an opportunity cost, it's there to beat skarmory and let curselax set up on special attackers. The trick is letting their suicune, superachi, jolteon, etc etc maybe kingdra? live then switching snorlax end game, you get one turn ahead you just curse while they position and bada bing bada boom you win. Status w jirachi sucks but idk you can play around it with curselax.
Tldr: I prefer thick fat over immunity
imagine if Slaking learned skill swap, that would be insta uber
I always thought it is a waste that pokemons can only have 1 ability, I think it would be a lot more interesting if they could have 2 or 3 each
The return of legendary Groodon 🎉
What's the difference between one-v-one and singles?
There is a format called 1v1 where you both pick one pokemon (instead of three or six).
Sometimes he speaks about 1v1 in the sense that a pokemon beats another "in a vacuum" so to speak, not taking into account switching/hazards/statussen/etc.
Slim Jim Gang
I’m generally new to this but I’m wondering…. Why is suicune not Ubers? It seems FAR superior to any other mon besides bliss. The fact most electric and grass attacks don’t even KO after like 3 hits with calm mind, it seems kinda game breaking? Just my thoughts after watching almost all the tournament games in this ADV revival
This is elaborate.
i think synchronize its a horrible abilty for glass canons like espeon and alakazam. i would have given trace to alakazam and speed boost to espeon.
It is such a shame. A good deal of the abilities in the OK tier would have been higher ranked if they were on different Pokémon.
