Inside a modern Hobbit House | Bag End 2.0 by Architect Reflects

  • As a big Lord of the Rings fan (I hope there’s more of us here!) I couldn’t resist the temptation to reimagine how Bilbo Baggins’s private home, Bag End, could look like in a modern version.
    So I am very excited to share with you my latest video about the Hobbit house that I designed as part of my CZcams channel - Architect Reflects.
    It was a daunting task, but on the other hand, I really liked the process of experimentation. In the video, I’m going through this design process and explain how I attempted to overcome its challenges. You’ll see how I transformed the iconic place into a contemporary space that hopefully still retains its charm and character.
    I hope you’ll enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed designing it!
    Feel free to share and subscribe. And I am curious to hear your thoughts and comments :)
    Thanks for all your support and encouragement!

    This design doesn't scar the landscape, and incorporating the tree is like an act of love for nature. It makes me dream about houses like this, hidden or decorative, in a landscape without roads. No asphalt spoiling the views or swallowing valuable space, just paths above and tunnels beneath. Architect makes viewers reflect 😊.

    The lighting designer in me was working out the exterior and interior lighting during presentation. I thought I wanted to live in the Dune house, but this one gives it a run for the money. I can’t even imagine the number of hours lying in bed in the early hours pre-visualizing every detail of every feature of this home. Truly incredible.

    A wonderful mockup, beautiful design. The real thing would need more consideration of how water flows around, and through, the structure. (Trees naturally collect moisture towards their trunk to bring water to the roots.... So a retaining wall around the tree would help retain that moisture from the rest of the house.) And the exterior staircases would need some type of watershed, to keep from flooding.

    It's a beautiful project that will work in theory. The catch is the hundred-year-old tree. Its roots run mainly above the surface in a larger perimeter than its crown, although it also has a pivoting root system. It will collect up to 200 litres of water per day from the surface. For construction, most of its roots will be cut. In addition, its trunk will be exposed to heat from heating. I don't give a damn about her survival under these conditions. Trees have extraordinary abilities to adapt, but it takes time for them to do so. To make the project viable in the long term, a tree would have to be planted in a masonry tube a hundred years in advance. Or we’d have to dig it up and force it to put its roots in this tube to save time by placing it above a spring that will flow below the house to provide it with water. Zero constraints, it exists only in theory, but you will find solutions !

    • @architectreflects
      @architectreflects  Před 10 měsíci

      You are correct! It would not be easy... actually the project started without the basement so it was not such a big problem. Then it evolved and I had to make some tough choices. Well, thank you for giving me some constructive ideas on how to tackle this issue if the time comes :)

    • @darthceoloc8350
      @darthceoloc8350 Před 10 měsíci

      @@architectreflectsIs it possible to reverse the elevation, putting the basement as a floor above? This way the tree roots are not impacted at all. Yes, elevations are different, but maybe possible.

    This is super awesome. I like it a great deal. I think on this design it would be good to include some art glass and a trace of inlay detailing. Still I love the use of Rammed Earth construction. The video is inviting and seems like somewhere a person or Hobbit would love to live.

    I would love to live here. I might pop a bit of a cobalt or another intense color onto the ceiling of the pantry. While I like the cohesiveness of the design and am in love with the use of light, I need a touch of whimsy, even and maybe especially in contemporary design, I need a moment when it feels less serious and structured, and a bit of humor and joy peaks through. Nice job on that custom couch, love the media room, very cozy and balanced. The kitchen, not sure how the central staircase would effect work flow, if the space and design allow a narrow workspace counter instead of railing, but then I have never cooked in a circular kitchen it might be an easy flow. I do have a Great Dane and I think kitchen zoomies would be a sight to see. But house with a tree at its heart, how beautiful to live with that as the center of your home.

    I wound reduce the headroom of your hobbit hole. Bar for that it interfaces quite well with the nature of the land. It got me into thinking of how they would build if they lived around different landforms, say plains, deserts, valleys. etc.

    Design is beautiful, however in practice you would need to keep the ground around the root system open to allow for growth and movement otherwise the tree will destroy the foundation or the house will choke and kill the tree

  • @Monty-in-gumboots
    @Monty-in-gumboots Před 10 měsíci

    I get a great feeling of flow and movement in this building. As a client I would be wanting to incorporate a lot of art nouveau elements in all parts of the house and its surroundings. I would also be asking if there was a way to keep an opening around the trunk of the tree (yet retain the some of the glass skylights there.) And would probably want someway for a staircase to get to the top from the inside the house. I think I would also find myself wanting to terrace the mound in some places, probably with stone.

Personally I would move the spiral staircases from the center to one side to allow an unbroken flow in the kitchen and office. Change the shape of the kitchen so their is no wall facing the living area to continue the open concept idea. Also wouldn't a hill top site be better?

    This is a brilliant and inspired design. I grew up always wanting to live in a hobbit hole. However, after living in a dark, subterranean, basement apartment while at university, I came to reconsider that. This however, is beautiful and full of light. The one thing that had always bothered me about Bags End, though, is the tree above it. Eventually, the roots from the tree would have grown into the hobbit hole, even through stone, brick, or mortar. While that is not a factor with your design, as you have incorporated the tree into the design, how have you planned to deal with the growth of the tree in regards to the seal that surrounds it? Just wondering from a practical design standpoint. Even given the slow growth of the tree, if the seal were not replicable, it could cause the tree to grow over it (though that would take some time) and could eventually force the frame out of alignment. The other possibility is that it could girdle the tree, killing it. If the seal is replicable, then it could be expanded to compensate for the growth. I'm not certain but I believe that the last time I checked, on average a tree trunk grows in diameter at the rate of 0.15 inches a year. This of course would vary by the type of tree and the local climate, rain fall, etc. Also, a certain maximum is usually given. Sorry, but these are the kind of things that run through my head and keep me awake at night.

    8:15....ok but the bedrooms have no closets....I would turn that layout into a two bedroom simply cuz I would have to convert two of them in the middle into walking closets...sorry 🙃or maybe modified the 2 bedrooms in the middle to be slightly bigger and then have some normal closets wall to wall...prolly making it a 3 bedroom but having to get rid of that hallway that divides them...the problem with the circular kitchen is that appliances would not follow that shape...so the fridge, oven, dish washer, washer and dryer would look all wonky....although I would place the washer and dryer in the pantry so that people from the bedrooms have easy access to it....
    other than those minor details, its a great design. good job!!

      The only people that could afford to build and live in this home would be nerdish techno narcissists. a little megalomania and self absorption is a necessary trait for progress. we now are living in a time when virtue signaling and neo marxist forces are usurping the power of visionary individuality and western enlightenment in the name of false altruism and liberalism. revel in this time my dear Hobbit as a last deep breath before the plunge, the golden horde is upon us...

    You should take a look at Parliament house in Canberra Australia.
    It's like a scaled up version of this idea.

      I looked it up :) you are right! I actually believe when it comes to architecture you can find that every idea was already done in some way or form. It is just importnat to give our own twist on it :)
