  • Margaret Thatcher appearing for interview on 'The Walden Interview' following the controversial resignation of her Chancellor Nigel Lawson.
The First part of the interview is non political and demonstrates excellent interview technique under pressure. Regardless of your political beliefs you have to admire her composure.

Brian was by far the best interviewer full stop. He never resorted to anger or insults unlike the weasels we have today. His calm persistence and analytical style was a real joy to watch. I admit to being a great supported of Margaret Thatcher and felt she was betrayed in the most despicable way by her fellow MP's. This interview is perfect example of two of the best at their respective professions. I always watched all his interviews because they were so good. I loved when he got the weasel MP's into a corner with no where to go. His expression "I don't want to put words in your mouth but is this what you are saying ..............?", when he did this they were doomed. I did admire David Frost but Brian had tenacity to expose the weasels with his skill before they realised they had shot themselves in the foot. He also admitted a failure of a policy he got passed as a Labour MP which showed great humility. Sadly missed.

Thatcher had quarreled with the monarchy, the House of Lords, the Church of England, the Inns of Court, the University of Oxford and the Chiefs of Staff-every ancestral prop of the British state. Detestable though she was, she was a radical and not a reactionary. She has not been removed for any of her offenses against democracy or decency. Rather, she has been deposed by those who worship only opinion polls and their own skins and who yearn for a quiet life and business as usual-living gallantly off the fat of the land.

This is an impressive interview from Mrs Thatcher. It was a tenuous moment for her as she had become more isolated in the cabinet regarding Europe - difficult because the party itself included a spectrum of belief on a very emotive and fraught question. However even in this tricky moment Mrs Thatcher knew how to remain within her convictions, which time was to tell were on point regarding the importance of the Madrid conditions. In my view Brian Walden was the best political interviewer of the day, however Mrs Thatcher was more than a match for his interrogation. Though Brian Walden is very forceful and accusatory in his questioning here I think it is not difficult to see his amused respect for Mrs Thatcher's ability to bounce off him. Mrs Thatcher had something she wanted to say and knew how to say it. I am by no means a fan of all that the Thatcher governments did - far, far from it. But I have to say the intelligence, competence, sincerity, quick-wit, and even humour in Mrs Thatcher's delivery were formidable. All are on show here.

I'm reading it at the moment and have reached the point of this interview, so I am grateful to Thomas Gatehouse and CZcams for making it available. Pity we are still living with the results of Thatcherism - railways, postal service, NHS, schools, wrecked industry, and all made so much worse by the national malaise caused by Brexit. But at least Thatcher answered the questions - unlike the slippery weasels of today.

I'm a Labour voter. Not since MT have we had a PM, or for that instance...an interviewer.....that asks and answers with such integrity. Integrity died with Margaret Thatcher. Our political system has diminished ever since. This interview is historic. Brian Waldren, sadly forgotten, was calm, to the point and sharp.....amazing. Margaret Thatcher had a presence, was honest, true to herself, and irrespective of her standing, she was everything one desires in terms of a leader. ....sadly, we probably have Kier Starmer imminent...last week we had an inane ITV stooge asking KS if he likes a pint???? Interviewer clearly as thick as pig ****. Apparently we are world leaders....NO we are not....our political system is a sham.....and dead. We need a reset, and....common sense.

The labour alternative is no better. Now, they are negotiating Brexit. Sovereignty can only be withheld by strong leadership, Thatcher and Churchill were. In Britain our political system is very different, we pursued socialism because it was more responsible to give people council houses and a free NHS and after the war most of country was rebuilt by the welfare state, before that there was much widespread poverty and inequality in Britain. Maggie never seemed to focus on the good points of socialism only the economic benefits of free markets and privatisation despite the issues that were caused in terms of housing and unemployment.Considering Mrs Thatcher's various fallouts with the Church at the time of her influence due to negative social consequences I'm not sure God would necessarily bless her at all.

He does seem a match for her in the way that wafflers such as Frost seldom ever are. I'm surprised this interview doesn't get as much notoriety as the famous Paxman/Howard Derek Lewis question, as Walden asks the same question about ten times himself and doesn't really get an answer until, sort of, at the 24 minute mark and even then not really.

This was a pivotal moment in the fall of the T Lady. Walden had been very sycophantic to her in previous years but this time he went after her with both barrels. The "off her trolley" remark stuck in the minds of the public and if one looks at her distant expression to Walden's badgering it certainly inspired confidence in her detractors in her own party to go after her and dethrone her in a very Conservative coup the following year.
