That’s the whole point and why they are called stock cars. Goes back to when your friendly neighborhood whiskey runner had to build his car to be faster than any police car he might meet. People start to talk, and soon enough it’s “my car faster than yours” “ Oh yeah, prove it” Years later, you have NASCAR.
Part of the charm of NASCAR is that they aren’t the highest evolution of what a race car can be. That’s F1, hands down and not even close. Race cars in NASCAR are too heavy, usually have way more power than the tires can apply to the track before they start spinning, and are generally hard to drive. Add that to the fact that the tires are protected by fenders, and there are too many cars on the track and they hit each other constantly , well, you get top tier American racing.
I love F1 cars, and the onboard footage of how they attack the race course with the speed and hand of god braking blows my mind, but I also think that NASCAR puts on a better show. That’s just me though.

I've never been to an F1 race but have been to some road races, drag races, etc. For those inside racing, there's pretty much mutual respect among the different disciplines (except for a few). I've looked over those cars and watched them race and can appreciate what they do and it was generally mutual.
Bottom line is racing at the highest level, in any type of racing, is damn hard. The guys doing it just make it look easy.
I find the spectators are the ones who get into the "which is best" arguments, a whole lot more than the active racers.
And as an aside, I always found that when other racers were watching a different type of racing, I usually heard the most awestruck comments when they were watching World of Outlaw sprint cars. It was always some form of "damn, those guys can wheel".

US has NASCAR. UK has BTCC. Germany has DTM. Australia has V8s. Etc. It doesn't matter how technical they are, people just love watching their hometown heroes race cars. Bernie Ecclestone is scratching his head wondering why nobody wants to pay to see his races anymore except wealthy autocrats and oil barons, while the grid is made up of a bunch of playboys from Monaco with one team dominating the whole season simply because they spent more millions than the other teams. Sure, there's tons of money in these other race series too, but at the end of the day they're still more down-to-earth than F1 has ever been, and that's what people like.

Michael Pullins Look up the term “Stock Car Racing.” A Stock car is different from a car that is stock. If they actually used cars that were stock you would have teams the tune their Camaro ZL1’s and Mustang GT’s to be able to run 200+ mph, hell you might even find some guy that souped up a Camry to run just as fast. The only reason the cars aren’t stock from the factory is because of the safety aspect, if you took a factory car and raced it around a track at 190-200 mph, you would most certainly die if you were in a crash, like many people did back in the day. There is a reason why the name of the series’ in NASCAR’s pantheon no longer includes the “Strictly Stock” division.

When both presenters were all set, their American coaches then started to race them. Clarkson called James' experience being "stabbed in the back by his new best friend." Yet somehow it felt like "I've trained you to be good enough to race me. Now show me what you can do." Whichever one is valid is up to you.

And on top of all that, I get a bonus of seeing some Dodge cars on the track.
