I'm so glad someone is finally reacting to this song. I've always loved it. The "my job is very boring" line always makes me laugh because back then, Martha worked for my mom.

It was somewhere around 1978 that my roommate dragged me down to a funky little Queen Street bar to see pre-"Echo Beach" M+M. Little did we know ~ but were not at all surprised ~ that they would have an international hit. They were good!

This song came out in my first year at high school in Toronto. I loved it and choreographed a dance routine around it for a class. I was thrilled that it charted in so many countries.
Another New Wave song of the era was Nova Heart by the Toronto area (Burlington to be precise) band The Spoons. Great New Wave song that sadly did not get beyond Canadian borders but should have.
Also check out another great feel-good song, Rise Up by the Parachute Club, another Toronto band from the 80's. Not New Wave but has more of a world music feel. Use the Canadian version, they also released it in the US - it got mellowed and some of the lyrics changed and it was watered down completely. To this day, I cannot listen or watch the US version/video.

I do like to see Canadian music getting requested on one of these channels. There's so much good music from here that didn't get a lot of exposure in the States.

So glad you enjoyed this one so much. They're actually one of my favorite bands, but you nailed it with this one. So catchy, so dreamy, really well put together. I may have to send you more from them. They're super cool. The lead vocalist, Martha Johnson and the guitarist, Mark Gane, are married and are still making music, despite the fact that Martha has Parkinson's disease now. She's still writing songs and singing and playing keyboards on new releases.

Great song. It’s also on a brilliant compilation album, Sound of the Suburbs, which has some other great New Wave/Punk/Mod artists like The Jam, The Undertones, Boomtown Rats and Squeeze. Every track an absolute banger.

The beginning of MTV and MuchMusic spawned a great era in music. Smaller groups could get airplay and flourish. Canada had a ton of groups at that level and higher. A couple I haven't seen reacted to yet are The Spoons (Old Emotions, Romantic Traffic) and The Partland Brothers (Soul City, Honest Man)
