    Another reason I like these vlogs albeit a petty one is they are never those patronising annoying click bait titles like “my narrow boat had a problem GUESS WHAT HAPPENED” etc etc. I detest those types of title. I think you tube must promote that sort of things as a way to get views as it’s so common but I can’t stand it and make a point of never watching a video with such a title.

    I have become addicted to this vlog. No where near water, I have moved onto canal time. Things to do, a retaining wall to rebuild, a cooker to install (but some cabinetary required first) or watch another vlog. Another coffee and a bikkie.

    I would think that considering the sedate and relaxing travel that is narrowboating, sheep alongside the the canal should be illegal, least the boater is unable to resist the temptation to count them

    Once again a great vlog, and thanks for taking us along on a facinating trip. Makes you wonder, though, what's more scary, tidal rivers with weirs, or canal locks with sills like high rise appartmnt blocks!? But David, buying potatos and tomatos, you're not going to actually cook are you? Remember, you have a reputation to maintain. Cheers, and good luck with the continuing trip.

    Hi David, thanks for this most enjoyable vlog, it's (almost) all very peaceful and quiet.The only thing (probably only due to being a retired bargee) was at the very start when you said when you were leaving that there were going to be a few locks further down, but in reality it was a few locks further up, but nothing important or that needs worrying about.

    Just wanted to leave a (keep warm) comment. For your hands feet and body, look into a motor cycle shop for such things. Here in the USA I would think items that run off of a motercycle 12v battery would keep feet and hands warm while at the tiller. also Amazon has electric stockings/ Alan, North Eastern US

    Silt, silt and more silt! Found myself in similar circumstances, yet again, the other day on a busy and well used stretch of the GU but in a quiet spot (like you...preferred). Is this how CRT are going to get rid of responsible CC,ers? Leave us unable to get within three feet of the bank to expire midstream for lack of sustenance, or have they forgotten what a dredger actually does! Your vlog remains a 'go to' piece of gentle evening entertainment. Many thanks.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  Před 7 lety

      It's immensely frustrating but to be fair, trying to dredge over 2,000 miles of canal on top of all the other maintenance must be very difficult.

    • @wheels9341
      @wheels9341 Před 7 lety

      While that is undoubtedly true I fear for the little used parts of the system. Is there an increasing danger of us losing what was so hard fought for by Rolt et al? CRT are so far behind status holding I wonder. We shall see. Take care and enjoy.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  Před 7 lety

    It's funny that you remark on the large estates on the canals, and how you'd like to own such a thing - but you have the best way of life, the best "house" attainable, on and IN the canal.

      I think that largely depends what you want from a marina. If shops, caravans, brokerage, tourists etc are your bag then Mercia may well fit the bill. Other people prefer a quieter spot or other locations.

  • @lewis72
    @lewis72 Před 6 lety +1

    Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here...
    If/when we get grounded at the side of the canal, I/we reverse off it, as the prop pulls water under the boat, lifting it up a little. Admittedly, you don't get much steering going backwards, so the judicious use of the pole is needed but I did find it more effective than trying to go forwards, which pulls the boat down, by evacuating water from underneath the boat and expelling it rearward.
    5:03 Swarkestone ?
    [ Ah yes, as you say a little later. The locals pronounce it "Sworks-stun ] Almost 20 years ago, I regularly used to enjoy a walk or cycle ride round those parts, especially seeing the start of the Derby canal, as I lived in the next village in towards Derby. It was only watered up to that first bridge, just 30m or so. Don't know if it's progressed since then.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  Před 6 lety +1

      It's not obvious but it is the correct technique. Much better to reverse off than to try to force the length of the boat over the ground, esp as the boat is deepest in the water at the stern.
