American Bluebird builds nest masterpiece

Eastern Bluebirds typically nest in natural cavities, but they often use nest boxes. Building their nest can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on climate and availability of resources.
This footage was captured in our nest box located in Virginia, USA, during the Spring breeding season of 2022. The time-lapse shows how the female constructs her nest from the beginning to the end by using straw and twigs. She builds it up layer by layer so that it is deep enough to excavate a small cup shape to hold the eggs. Most Bluebirds will lay a clutch of between 2 and 7 eggs and can have multiple broods in one breeding season.
The female laid five eggs in this nest, and we expect the first ones to hatch during mid-May.
