Golum is even more likeable and relatable than all the characters. immagine being 20k year old elven smith and you dunno how to make a fucking rings from 3 metals

    From a casual viewer perspective I find the plot disjointed. The LOTR movies can be watched without knowing any lore prior, and have a decent understanding of the world and characters/races by the end. Rings of Power just doesnt make sense. It's just disjointed events happen to characters with no arcs or development.

    • @travelsizedhispasian
      @travelsizedhispasian Před 2 lety +17

      as someone who has yet to _completely_ watch all the LOTR movies (i've watched 2 of the movies and remember important moments/few snippets from others) and only watched half of the show cause my ma put it on-i second this.
      although i haven't watched all the movies from LOTR, i can certainly say that the movies contain a cohesive, logical, and interesting plot/story with notable characters where you care about the journeys and developments made throughout. like you said, "the LOTR movies can be watched without knowing any lore prior...", but i can't say the same for Rings of Power lol
      i watched at least 4 episodes from this show, with two of them back-to-back-even with the context from previous episodes, it was a cluster of jumbled details and things meshed up together in an uninteresting, dull mass. i get i haven't watched the entirety of the show or all of the LOTR movies, and i'm definitely no expert in things LOTR, but it's a pretty worrying indicator if the viewer has a hard time understanding anything of what's going on screen / is disinterested because it feels monotonous when no sense of importance on anything is established; nothing made me want to actively watch the show or caught my attention.
      correct me if im wrong tho cause who knows, maybe there are a few vital, important episodes or moments that makes this show decent at the minimum-but that's my observation from the episodes i watched

    This is quite possibly the worst tv show I’ve ever seen. I hate nearly everything about it. I think a few of the actors actually are pretty talented, however the writing, dialogue, and the way those characters personalities are made are so terrible I can’t even like the few talented actors. The makers of this show don’t understand how distance or time work. They change nearly everything they actually use from Tolkien 180 degrees and ruin everything. I started the season as a 4/10, but by the end it’s down to a 1/10. I think that 1 point is because I find Bronwyn quite attractive. (south land lady)

      the actors were picked not because of their skin, but because of their acting capabilities, the artistic representation doesn't exactly mirror what is actually within the lore, its like with the ride of the rohirrim, during their charge into battle the song obviously wasn't playing over the battlefield but through the artistic representation of the battle the song was added over the charge in post production because it added to the effect of the scene, the actors may be black but it doesn't mean that their characters are, its just due to their acting capabilities being what the production team were after so they were hired.

    I think the show actually makes perfect sense if you look at it this way - the events of the second age here are portrayed from Sauron's point of view. It's as if he broke the fourth wall, saw the LOTR trilogy and decided to show the viewer his take on the Middle-earth and why his struggle to dominate, control and instill order is justified:
    - Galadriel is a spoiled elven she-brute in a dress, applying her abilities not for order and concord, but for endless hostility and bickering, placing herself above any foes or allies
    - Celebrimbor is half-decent, as he could be manipulated into making rings of power. Viewed by Sauron as severely lacking in craftsmanship (not knowing what alloys are) and requiring guidance to produce the rings
    - Gandalf is a bumbling fool with too much power
    - Isildur, his father, men of Numenor and all men in general are weak, discordant and corrupt
    - Dwarves are isolationists who want nothing to do with other races of Middle-earth, as long as they are free to pursue their endless avarice and exploit the earthen depths
    - Hobbits are unwashed, inconsequential people preoccupied with their own petty comfort, caring neither for the world, nor for their own kin
    - Orcs are actually good creatures, who despite their appearance have unity amongst themselves and loyal to their leader, capable of bringing order to the lands of Middle-earth
    - Halbrand - he himself - never actually did anything vile or deceiving while having a fair body. Rather had to witness all kinds of madness, that eventually drove him to Mordor

      Yes if the show was on purpose designed to been seen from Annatar's / Halbrand's / Sauron's point of view then this would logical.
      However, Tolkien's 2nd age story is portrayed from the men and the Elves's point of views.
      Also this show is definitely portrayed from Guy - lad - rieeeel's point of view as she is in nearly everything important.

    LOTR had a main protaganist in Frodo, a hobbit who couldn't fight very well, and did not want to be a hero and even doubted his own strength and will to do what was asked of him, though he took it upon himself to try. Without the Fellowship and later Sam by his side and Gollum to guide them, he would never have got as far as Mount Doom, and even then, he failed at the very last moment due to the power the One Ring had over him after such a long and arduous journey, showing why Gandalf himself feared possessing the One Ring.
    Tolkien let his main protaganist fail at the last. Consider how brave a choice that was. All to prove how the One Ring overpowers you in the end, no matter how good you are.
    But no, what do they give us: A obsessive Warrior Queen Galadriel who demands help all the time and has no doubts in herself wotsoever and the Harfoots.

What an opportunity to explore these ancient cultures, show these people "of color" to be extremely advanced, and explain why they ended up on Sauron's side. Nope! Much easier to have Dwarves that rarely see sunlight, and Elves well described in cannon, be of darker complexion. This whole thing is just an excercise in laziness. Jackson had 1/3d the budget, and created a masterpiece. These people took a billion dollars....and just pissed it away.

    • @jhmi7877
      @jhmi7877 Před rokem

      The interesting thing about the political side of it, is that Tolkien's work didn't need those additives to have been politically correct. For example with Galadriel--in Tolkien's lore, she's already a very strong, respected, and powerful woman. We can see this even in Cate Blanchett/PJ's portrayal of the character, whose presence commanded respect without saying a word. Or Eowyn, with her "I am no man" scene as she obliterates the witch king. Even if they weren't written as "strong women" arcs by Tolkien, they could easily be seen as such without ever deviating from the lore.
      As per the racial thing... what truly bothered me was that scene at the bar where Arondir was told by a white dude to "let go of the past." I'm quite left leaning when it comes to politics. But that scene in the show for me left such a bad taste in my mouth. It's like the equivalent of seeing a product advertisement in the show. Very hamfisted and only exists to bait people and check boxes. Tolkien's original lore would have been completely fine, even in the politically correct spectrum, if they just left it alone.

I saw the forced diversity and was annoyed they didn’t exploit the already existing racial differences in Tolkien’s world instead of copy pasting modern society over it. I also disliked the heavy diversion from the source material and honestly nearly fell asleep while watching. It was a challenge to keep my attention towards the show. I must’ve grabbed for my phone at least 5 times.
    I decided to stop watching this trainwreck after sitting through episode 1. I just don’t care for it. I don’t feel like I’m missing out at all and now Rings of Power will just be another series I will never watch. Can’t be disappointed if you’re not invested in it, right?

    I have no Netflix, no Amazon Prime, no Facebook, no Instagram, no Twitter, no TikTok... No Job, No Car, No Girlfriend, No Future, No Dick...... (cit.) ... and I actually discovered the existence of this TV show just today, because somebody linked a CZcams vid.
    So I googled for it and that's the very first thing I've watched about this show. I've not even watched one single trailer of it, ever.
    And I'll do myself a favor and won't watch it LMAO

    What most critics don't understand is that the ROP is NOT made for people who like LOTR. It is made for 13 year old entitled GRRLS who overheard their brothers talking about LOTR and got pissed off that such a huge cultural event as that book and film trilogy weren't about THEM. So ROP's show runners decided to 'fix' that. Hence, the heap of sh*t that cost $1 billion.

    Even treating this show as fanfiction, it's is so bad. The so-called plot is impossible --- what is the point of the stranger? Why are the Harfoots a bunch of dirty, boring sociopaths, why is celebrimbor looking like a boomer and taking advice from a man ---and, a craftsman doesn't know about alloys? It goes on and on --- it's just boring, unfocused, and uninteresting. The mithel thing is ridiculous --- why add it at all? Not necessary at all. Theo , what is that all about? and why would anyone care? So much of it is uncomprehensible and the dialogue is laughable --- The sea is everything, I have a tempest in me ---- such a lack of talented writers! And, they have Tolkien to guide them, one of the masters of language!

    It’s just not Lord of the Rings. Tolkien created LOTR as a love letter to the ancient Nordic, Celtic, and Germanic cultures of Europe. That’s what it’s about. I don’t have a problem with diversity on its own, and neither does Tolkein, but there’s a difference between diversity and global homogenization. Every race in Middle Earth can’t in and of itself be an equitable race and gender quota. Once you do that then it’s no longer LOTR; you just changed the fundamental building block of the story. Until each race is it’s own people then any story of them coming together and coming to love and respect those with different values and virtues (e.g cultural appropriation) then it’s not LOTR. When you have black female queens for both the dwarfs and numenorians you have jumped the shark.

    So, what exactly do you mean by that? His works? Name anything he published you read, or even something unrelated to his most famous books!Absolute twats.
