The pilot of this aircraft, Captain Bhavya Suneja was my classmate and a dear friend. Lost him to such a tragic accident. May his soul rest in peace! 💐
It's maddening to think what his family must have gone through. They labelled him incompetent and questioned his qualification.. imagine having to read about your loved one like this 💔

I remember when Boeing tried to blame the Indonesian and Ethiopian inspector and governments for the crashes, they said "Those are underdeveloped countries with poor infrastructure and poor laws on aircraft maintenance" disgusting how even when they knew what the problem was they tried to blame the "poor nations" for it....
Blaming pilots isn't new for Boeing unfortunately. When the 737 Classic crashed due to the rudder hardover design flaw back in the 1990s, Boeing blamed the (American) pilots.
Well 80% of aircraft accidents are pilot error. But also, there is never one single reason for an accident: there are multiple factors. Pilot btw.

It hurts me watching this as an indonesian myself, especially with the part where Lion Air exchanging email with Boeing, raising concern regarding additional training to their pilots. Lion Air itself is really one airline i would personally would not fly with, however seeing this really breaks my heart to families that been affected by the crash. It’s sad that greed and company’s profit are more important than integrity.

As a Boeing employee, words cannot express my shame for the lack of accountability for the leaders of a once proud aerospace leader. Boeing now is only a mere shadow of what was a proud, innovative fantastic company. The Chicago leadership only have concerns about stock dividends and their bonus percentage. The IAM, SPEEA,salary folks still take the greatest of pride about building the best, safest aircraft in the world. Unfortunately leadership talk the talk but never walk the walk. 25 million dollars severance to the disgraced CEO. The man who was personally responsible for the tragic deaths of 300+ souls. To the families of those who lives will forever be touch by these events, we those build the planes want you to know that ever bolt, rivet and flight system we put in is done with your sacrifice in the front of minds. You will NEVER be forgotten by us. To us safety is all that matters. May you one day find peace.
After the victims and their families the next victims are you hardworking Joes who spend their days toiling to produce the best plane you can, only to be spat on by the clowns in suits.

China grounded Boeing 737Max after the first crash, while FAA didn't ground the plane immediately after the second crash, they did it only after Europeans grounded the plane. In hindsight the prudent way is always the better way.
I wish they would release a doc about the Malaysia flight that disappeared.

I am sorry for how they mocked them, that was rude and inexcusable. That being said, the pilots of those flights were categorically at fault. I am a pilot and the actions of those guys is what caused the crash. Yes the system failed but normal flying abilities and actions would have resulted in a safe return to landing.

The most ironic thing is that the pilot for the Indonesian flight was actually trained in the U.S. It’s not the responsibility of the pilot to correct for a broken sensor and adjust according to a flight system they weren’t even made aware. This was Boeing’s flight, 100%.

I just finished it. What an excellent documentary and I like how the got the actual Captain Sully in the court and talk about it. He knew how terrible it was to have people question your experience and qualifications when all you wanted at that time was to do things right and save everyone.

In the air it doesn't matter what you want or how pure your intentions are, only what you actually do. However sad it is, the truth is the pilots of those planes on those days were inept and did not respond properly to the situation. Very simple actions were all that was necessary to save the day and they simply did not do those things, regardless of how pure their intentions. None of this is to demean anyone, I am a pilot and just trying to explain some of these aviation events where the reality is very different from how the media makes it seem.

Yes these countries don't have the schools as in America . so isn't it common sense to train harder in less developed countries mh80 was lost in this theater of operation. What boeing should do is not sell these complicated jets to third world countries. I worked on boeing helicopters they are the best three flight control systems even power steering I was grilled for 6 months before i could even do safety wire on any nut but i was Army. Take these mechanics from Indonesia and africa and work on our military aircrafts no fuckin way . these governments are so corrupt and it flows downhill Once again netflix gets it wrong they should of asked or did research on the Maintenance logs i looked at enough of them I would ground all their aircraft for FOD in the flightline. don't blame the american companies that you beg for our technology. This isn’t just a problem with Boeing putting profits over safety, this is a lack of government oversight when the FAA allowed them to perform their own certifications
A common third party left out of the discussion is the airlines operating the airplanes themselves. Many lobbied heavily for a plane built on the 737 airframe but with increased efficiency and that it require no additional training for pilots. This, along with loose regulation oversight by the FAA and an increasing money over safety culture in Boeing lead to this situation unfortunately.

Boeing simply recognised that this is the only way they are beating Airbus, which is why they commenced the development of the Max model and marketed is as fully compatible with 737 pilot training. There’a always demand for less fuel consumption, faster speeds and higher seat count. That’s not an excuse. I’m against pitchfork mobs and this documentary will probably be very sensationalised, but your comment is so far up Boeing’s ass they might as well be paying you.
That’s like saying drug addicts “lobbied” Purdue Pharma to keep producing OxyContin, downplaying its risks in marketing materials and establishing perverse incentive schemes for doctors prescribing it for broken pinkies.
@@Avengerie The airline industry apply pressure through purchasing policy. If it takes too long to manufacture, or the purchase price is too high, they go elsewhere.
Also, I know of airlines right now who pressures their employees to PAY THEMSELVES for the upgrade of their licensing to fly new types of planes (by a complicated system of outsourcing employment policy). A cost that can run several hundred thousand dollars. if Boeing could provide a new plane that didn't require MAJOR education costs, that would help the airlines AND their pilots tremendously. I'm sure nobody thought of how that could endanger passengers and themselves in the long run ..
But, Boeing and their "relationship" with FAA regulators and Congress is probably the worse offender BY FAR! In 2005 the use of outside control was discontinued with the blessing of Congress and the move to South Carolina (non-union/no-objections employees) didn't help either.

Boeing made it seem they are on par with or even better than Airbus (no need to retrain pilots), while cutting costs and performing a smoke and mirrors show every step of the way. To now claim they were somehow pressured by airlines is laughable. They chose to compete in this market segment in search of profits and presented a product that wasn’t up to standards.

When all the families held up the pictures at the hearing...... as a grown man, I felt a lot of emotions... I can't imagine having to live through that time and time again. RIP to everyone who lost family and friends.
Yesterday on 06 JAN 2024 the same Boeing 737 Max was flying to another US State, when suddenly its door exploded and fell off the plane. And today all of the Max's were grounded in the same state. I guess the time has come for the MAX to retire before something worse happens.
I knew it was Boeing but didn't realize it was a 737 Max. They're just wanting to dig their own grave, it seems.
To the people who made this documentary, you have my sincerest thanks and deepest heartfelt gratitude. words can't even begin to describe how important something like this, and that it got made. After all my years at that company this kind of corruption of the culture at Boeing was only going to end one way, and it drove a lot of workers insane trying to find any way to stop it. That company lost a lot of it's most talented employees because of the evil that was seeping out of Chicago. Never should have happened, and I'm glad I left that place when I had the chance.
Astonishing movie. After all this, 4 days ago another Boeing 737 MAX 9 lost a piece midair and only pure luck prevented another hundreds of human lives lost. Who is going to stop this insanity?
I flew on the Ethiopian 737 max before. When I heard one of them crashed I felt sick to my stomach. Boeing makes incredible planes, but this whole story about the 737 max is an absolute disgrace and Boeing should be punished severely for it.

Dennis Muilenburg got his golden handshake, Boeing escaped criminal prosecution by paying 2.5 Billion dollars. The families of the victims received peanuts in comparison. The undertones of racism towards the pilots and authorities of those airlines involved was disgraceful. I don't think I will ever fly Boeing again.

Only thing worse than Boeing’s actions is the American exceptionalism that wants to blame “third world training” and “third world pilots”…those very pilots and airlines didn’t have any issues up until now and suddenly, two different airlines, two different crews have the same issue with the same plane…that may be more than just third world training.
In an email exchange, Boeing called Lion Air stupid for requesting more pilot training beyond just slideshows on an iPad.
as an Indonesian, i was so mad when they said that our pilots lacked proper training because they come from a poor country. those pilots were trained mostly in US/Europe and they have never crashed an Airbus before.

@@johnnycash5858 Air France flight 447 was completely pilot error and not the plane's fault. Also, Qatar is just trying to get money by the paint issue. This also happened on boeing's composites so stfu boeing fanboy.
@@orlovsskibet 447 was caused by pitot tubes freezing. An Airbus design flaw and a pilot who arguably shouldn't have been in a cockpit meant that a crash was inevitable.

I was part of the engineer team in the 737. We did raised the exact concerns when the executives decided to overrule profit over safety. They wanted to rush the launch to compete with airbus. My heart goes out to the innocent families..

This all happened because Boeing wanted to make big and round engines like the a320neo and decided to add the engines almost above the wings when the max was designed to be lower on the ground in the first place.
So exactly what was your role? If you describe your involvement as being "part of the engineer team" I really doubt you were involved at all.

I saw the 20/20 investigation of this a few weeks ago so I am DEFINITELY interested in this documentary; especially seeing as how it's from Netflix

They probably won't. This seems like a documentary poised as a fight between the victims families and Boeing, not as a technical demonstration of what went wrong and why. Netflix documentaries seem great, because they create drama when drama is the last thing you need to be able to have an objective opinion based on all the facts.

@@terence.pereira I’m sure they’ll at least touch on the MCAS and how Boeing registered it as an extension of the 737 to eliminate the need for pilots to go through full training.
As a regular flier before the pandemic...anything about airplane accidents like this really sends chills and my heart goes to the families.
I am an airline pilot, if you fly in the states you have nothing to worry about. The rules here vs. There are very different and we train over and over and over again to prevent accidents and keep you guys safe and happy in the back. Boeing did make a mistake on the original jet but good pilots can and did overcome that with nothing or note coming from it. Sadly the training and maintenance practices at lion especially was abysmal and illegal in many ways. All that to say we are highly trained professionals that take our jobs very seriously and every time I walk into the jet I am ready to use all of my skills to keep you and everyone else as safe as possible ✈

Prison time for gross negligence (a felony) was the only appropriate accountability that would stop Boeing Senior Executives from the malfeasance they have perpetrated and gotten away with for decades. The 737 MAX is not the first time their greed for $$$$$ millions in end of year bonuses has killed innocent people. Just the most obvious.
And, the DOJ gave them all a pass as a result of Boeing’s powerful, abusive and inappropriate influences in the USGOV.
Tragically, the danger their leadership culture presents still exists with David Calhoun as the CEO. Merely a crony of the old guard, a member of the BOD and Dennis Muilenburg fan club since 2009 who did nothing to stop the MAX killing machine.
Actual humans (Boeing executives) need jail time, which almost never happens when companies commit crimes. Sure, the CEO lost his job, but he can continue to be a millionaire and the company can pay a relatively small fine and just carry on.
@@ross4 but jailed by a US court would be hurting the multi billion dollar exporter Boeing is, and the country wouldn't let that happen imo. Much like Boeing itself, the US court can't take that financial risk

Man I’m someone who’s just fascinated by airplanes and the aviation/aerospace industry in general - I’ve watched practically all movies on the subject such as snakes on a plane, into the night, sully etc etc

I just got done watching this, and I recommend it to anybody. I especially loved Sully being a part of it. My condolences to the families and friends of the lives lost on these flights.
This trailer actually gave me goosebumps. Another greedy corporation puts aside the value of human life just to make money. I hope the families get some form of justice by the end of this documentary because if they don’t I might throw the nearest heavy object at my television.
If its money then yes, there was a settlement.
The good corporation is always undercut by the bad. The ones that aren't greedy go out of business.
The thing is this won't change with a CEO change. This is a whole corporate culture at Boeing, and it'll take years or even a decade to change that, if it ever happens.

There is a good 20/20 episode on this as well. The pilots fought HARD to save those planes (I believe one nose dived over 40 times). Boeing knew it was a flaw in the navigation system but still blamed the pilots and gambled with human lives.

Not a flaw in the navigation system. The plane was not aerofynamic due to the larger engines mounted to the wing mounts. It wanted to automatically stall. My understanding.
This is such a good documentary and well worth a watch! It shows just how a once admired aviation institution, world renowned for its quality and safety, can be destroyed by corporate greed and putting profits before safety! For those people commenting and trashing the pilots, they clearly haven’t watched this 🤷🏻♂️

Thanks, Netflix for showing this. You , Imagine Entertainment and Rory Kennedy were brave to release this gripping documentary. Boeing amazed me as kid with the 747 and how you could exit a 727 through the rear. Sadly, it's not the Boeing of today.

@@stellita884 they have modified the plane heaps though, and placed a heap of control back on the pilots as it should have been from the start.
The MAX redesign threw off the original center of gravity. The MCAS was supposed to help trim the aircraft for stability, but obviously with Boeing, money and beating Airbus to the punch, is more important than lives.
A good friend of mine worked on boeings for years. He went from loving boeings to being mistrustful of boeings and doing extra checks after the crashes
I can recommend a good book for you/your friend. It's called Airframe by Michael Crichton.......great book & insightful re aviation & safety. P.s an uncanny coincidence into the 737 phenomena in that book...Hmmm.

When the victims are Indonesian, they blame the pilot. But when the victims are Americans they start to investigate. Human lives are not equal in the US.
You are 100% correct. Lives are absolutely NOT equal in America and not just in this situation either.
That's not true. I am a pilot, we investigate every accident in order to learn everything we can. After investigating, these 737 crashes were clearly pilot error. Evidence of this is, even in America over 80% of aircraft accidents are deemed to be pilot error. Pilot error includes things like this where there was a system failure but normal pilot skills and manuvers would have resulted in a safe landing. That is exactly what happened here.
@@keithcarlton2054 it was explained in the movie that in the simulation no pilot will survive if they were not informed about the mcas. Yet eventhough the Ethiopian had been informed about the mcas they were unable to deactivated it. So are you still think this is the pilot fault?
@@wancoet yes I do still believe pilot fault because the movie is factually incorrect. Case and point, the flight prior to the lion air crash experienced the same fault yet nothing happened because the jumpseater (jumpseat is an additional seat in the cockpit for other pilots to ride on but aren't part of the flying crew) saw the problem and helped them take the proper steps to fix it. I understand you may not be a pilot but the short version is when MCAS fails it presents exactly like another system failure, trim. Trim failures are major training focuses in all aircraft that are equipped with automatic trim (the vast majority). Therefore this specific training was not required and the pilots should have acted normally. Because they did not act according to the procedure, again trim procedure not mcas procedure (although they are the same), their actions put that plane in the ocean. In Ethiopian the first officer noticed the fault, called it out, and took proper steps to fix it. However the captain then later demanded the FO re-engage the faulty system. This is a huge no-no for us, we never ever re-engage a system that is known to be faulty. This, accompanied by other critical mistakes drove the plane into the ground.

The situation when the Lion Air Max crashes, after being grounded for a little bit, they resumed flying, then came the Ethiopean Max, the situation is not the first time something like this has happened. Years ago, in the 1950s, the De Havilland Comet suffered a similar fragile start to its flying career

The one in Indonesia, that scary af man. The altitude and speed go crazy out of control, and the pilot doesn't have control and realize until they nose down to the sea with maximum speed. The biggest part from the plane that was found on the sea was only a square meter and no fully human body was found due to high-speed impact. My biggest condolence to all family members of the passenger.
There's some of human body, because my friend was a forensic doctor who helped to identify the victim and the condition was so terrible.
I heard that family of the victim sue Boeing but idk if they're win on court or not.
I had a guest lecture in one of my mechanical engineering courses from the aerospace expert witness who worked with the Chicago law firm which sued Boeing. Incredible story of risk mitigation in engineering.

When you have bean counters instead of true engineers in charge this what you get. If your company requires great engineering then there should be someone well versed in engineering in charge. hey a thought. A engineer as the top of the food chain. I.E Elon Musk. You can't walk up to him and tell him anything. He knows. Physics and engineering background . Not just a " does this make us and the shareholders a profit suits"

Very interesting but Sully’s remark stunned me when he said “we shouldn’t expect pilots to compensate for designed flaws” while after the second crash he actually blamed it on poor training to later on changing his opinion after he tried to recover the situation in a simulator. Rather interesting remark from someone that actually told investigators and the commission at his hearing post Hudson that they did not consider the human factors and are only looking for someone to be blamed which in fact he did too after the second crash he blamed the pilots before knowing all facts !
Love that producers can produced quality documentaries with Netflix's willing to aired it...and in turn they will undertake more quality programmes in the future.

Really interested to watch this. I love aviation and the competition between Airbus's release of the A320-NEO and the Boeings 737-MAX was something I was interested in seeing develope, but with the fate of Lion Air and Ethiopian Airline's flights, it was really disheatening. So many lives lost on poor decision making with finacial gain likely being one of the leading contributing factors.
