    Learn how to use what a lot of singers avoid to create aggressive, pitch-free screaming! You won't hurt your voice when using this approach either. Be intense in the right way (not tense) and execute with and without singing!

      I couldn't agree more! Chris is seemingly the only one that acknowledges the emotion of music and the nuances while still focusing on safety. A lot of vocal coaches are kind of a one-trick pony, singing every distorted note in the exact same aggressive style, from AIC to Slipknot. I like that Chris focuses on why singers sound the way they do and not just that they're singing a certain high note or something.

      @@giannismusic2694 The one trick pony thing is very true. I also find a lot of these youtube vocal coaches aren't incredibly competent singers to begin with. I feel confident in saying most of the youtube vocal coaches out there parrot the same information, have a habit of saying a whole lot of nothing, and don't having the talent to back up their teaching.
      Even vocalists I have a lot of respect for like Mary Zimmer have a hard time explaining stuff like physical responses (like resonance in your chest or whatever). I don't doubt she's a great coach in person or over skype, but Chris just has an incredible way of describing things in these videos. In every one of his examples I can replicate/feel exactly what he's describing. It's almost scary.

    Trust me guys the more you practice the more you understand yourself especially if you do weird voices with different techniques
    I've been doing stupid weird sounds until I unlocked my screaming but it really took me a time, It really made me feel disappointed every time I fail so don't give up
    When you feel hurt just stop and drink a lot of water after every 25 mins so your vocal cords recover
    Never back to practice until your vocal cords are fully recovered 👍🏻

    • @thatguy4994
      @thatguy4994 Před 4 lety +4

      False chord is done by having your vocal folds held in an open position while using the tissues above the vocal folds to produce the distortion sound. The same breathing fundamentals still apply to this technique. Focus on placing the distortion around your soft pallet, imagining the sound being produced around your hard pallet can help, to avoid damaging your vocal folds while attempting this technique.
      The most common ways of finding your false chord sound is either by doing an overly exaggerated sigh, or mimicking the barking of a large dog. While doing that try to take notice of where the distortion is coming from. It should be above the vocal folds as mentioned above. Once you get the basic short burst of the sound down, work on extending it out longer. That should get you your basic mid scream and from there you can do tongue and mouth manipulations to change the sound.
      The main difference between fry screaming and false chord is that fry screams is vocal folds held closed and false chord is held open. Fry screams also have a "smoother" sound to them and false chord tend to sound more "clicky".
      Hope this post helps you.

I've been trying to get into doing some heavier covers, like Disturbed for example, and this video is very helpful. I was having some issues going back and forth from clean to distorted vocals but its getting a little easier. The very nature of being heard draws me to you videos every time just like the amount of knowledge you show! I learned the screaming via cardiliges screaming. Same thing as for sound but still contains somewhat of a pitch. While the vocal cords are singing the note the cardiliges create the distortion. It's really useful for low and mid notes but as for higher ones it is still kinda tough for me. Basically "nasal fry", because i use nasality to acces it, wel at least when i started out, now it comes to just "swithing it on and off"! Great lesson! I feel this method is kinda restricting ( the one in the video) but it really helps having a safe point where one can just turn it on.
    On a side note does the voice's sound improve with time when singing? I have seen some improvement on mine but am unsure.

    For a long time (5y?) i was growling and stuff, but recently i had a 2y break, but even before that I couldn't understand the idea behind the fry stuff. I found your video both entertaining and enlightening. I'll stick to your channel for a while and see what happens next :)

    What I find is if you scream a song in the same way as before you push from down low then it gives you a good way of practicing getting the fry on demand I find architects to be a good shout 👍

    I often wondered if that type of screaming was compatible with developing and maintaining a good mixed voice. Evidently, it is! My main problem was and still is my passage, which feels hit or miss. Now, at least, I know I can work on both without fear of hurting one or the other.

    I get such a thrill from listening to you screaming. I can't wait to be able to practice this too. Sadly, I have nowhere to do so because I don't yet have a sound treated room, so as to not annoy my neighbors, but it is in the works. It also doesn't help that I feel too shy and embarrassed to sound like an idiot 🤣

    Hey Chris, just want to share that your vocal lessons have been incredibly helpful and the only ones that have resulted in any form of progress for me. Through your videos I've finally been able to learn how to scream and discover my mixed voice!! I do have a question though: I find that I tend to "forget" how to scream when I'm practicing my mixed voice and vice versa - is this normal? Thank you again for your amazing tutorials!!!

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  Před 4 lety +1

      Totally normal. It just takes time... and being warmed up properly. I feel like there is an element of re-learning mix and screaming every time I go to sing! Even after years and years of doing this stuff... It's ALL about FEEL :)

    Great video! I usually feel it's easier to make a pitchless scream though. When I'm warmed up I can make a really decent fry scream, but when it comes to distortion (like Courtney Love for example, as I mentioned her in my last comment) it gets hard to hold the rasp and make it powerful. Do you think you could make a video about it? How to hold a powerful distortion but with a voice in it/ how to find the balance between the scream and voice and keep it that way :D

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  Před 4 lety +4

      @@chrisliepe Oh I think I have already watched all of your videos on distortion, but there's never too much advice :D Sometimes I have issues on developing my distortion, some days it sounds great, but mostly it sounds just like vocal fry exercises (I mean like the sound from the Grudge, not scream :D) and won't go further.

    • @KERASET97
      @KERASET97 Před 4 lety +3

      @@MishiaEatingUnicorn Here's a little advice! If you are struggling with distortion search for alternative ways to activate it. Something that acts as a "switch" I for example use cartiliges screaming( see my comment in the video I explain it a little). The sound for distortion will be almost the same with different methods but find your "switch" and develop it!

    • @MishiaEatingUnicorn
      @MishiaEatingUnicorn Před 4 lety

      @@KERASET97 Aaah, sorry man, I don't understand the cardiliges thing. Could you explain more?
      I'm not a native english speaker so I googled the word "Cartilage" and this is what wikipedia says:
      "Cartilage is a resilient and smooth elastic tissue, a rubber-like padding that covers and protects the ends of long bones at the joints". I don't get how does this apply to singing/ screaming. :D
