  • Food is essential to human survival. Regardless of whether times or hard or livable, food is an "absolute". The same principle holds true for the Korean military. From the difficult times of founding the army to the present time where Korea ranks among the Top 10 in the world in terms of economic development, food will always be the number one factor in boosting soldiers' morale and physical strength, as well as a measure for economic strength. This documentary looks into the development of the Korean military after independence through the medium of food.

Everyone's are forced to serve because of situation bet north and south. I am Korean and I did it 2 years ago. I'm a fashion designer with sensitive taste. I did it anyway because I will be criminal if I don't. Yes every men in Korea can share these experiences but just think about how we waste our time at the very young age. Nothing to offend you but just wanted point out that it's not something beautiful. It's something we Koreans can't avoid and do it without our own decision.

I was in the US Army but got to spend a week with the ROK Army as part of an officer exchange program. Something interesting I noticed is it appeared the food quality for their Soldiers improved the closer you got to North Korea. I spent most of my time with a support unit pretty far in the rear; while the food was ample it was awfully bland and with little meat. But I got a chance to go up to the DMZ and as I went north, things seemed to get better; stopped at a headquarters a couple miles south of the MDL and had a lunch of fried fish. Had dinner within eyesight of North Korea which included beef ribs! Oh, and in all the units I visited the kimchi was excellent.

The standard of meals for South Korean soldiers is three meals a day, and the cost of meals per day is 6848 Korean (the standard set in 2014, equivalent to about 42 yuan). However, this price is very low relative to the income level of South Korea, because the price of food ingredients in the army is much cheaper than the market price. In addition, the cost of meals for ordinary soldiers has increased from 8790 won (about 45 yuan) to 10000 won (51 yuan) per day, and about 3300 won (17 yuan) per meal. But the prices in Korea are on the high side, so you can't eat very good food.

I remember S. Korean conscripts back in the mid and late 80s. They complained about the food and they used to ask for our socks that had holes in them because they were only issued two! Hahaha. Times have changed but ROK soldiers, marines are born hard. Cool upload though

    tasty food? LOL.
I worked at Support & Logistic (군수) and I attended monthly meeting related to food (1종). We always had same problem every week; soldiers weren't eating enough food and cost of disposing left over was increasing every month. Soldiers would rather go to PX and spend their meager salary ($120~$170 per month) to eat instant foods (noodle, frozen meat, snacks, etc.). Military food wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. The cooks did their best, but menu wasn't good.
We requested Support & Logistic HQ to reduce our ration or provide with more meat, but HQ always responded with "cook food better". I thought only my division had terrible cooks (all of 12 battalions). Nope, every division nearby had same problem; soldiers weren't eating.
After a while, HQ finally reduced rice ration per soldier from 800g to 500g, because they would rather reduce ration than provide more meat.
Only if you haven't served in Korean military, you would believe that Korean military serve "good" food to soldiers.
Let me be clear; the food isn't bad, but if I had a choice, I would choose US chow hall over Korean counter part any other day.

are they privates? If so, they have to eat. Ask them again when they are Sgt. or Cpl
If they are really eating ROK foods, then
      1) They have very strict CO and Master Sgt.
      2) There are a few people who actually like ROK food.
      3) Food considerably got better within last 8 months (not cooking, but actual fucking menu)
      Edit
Just went to reserve training at ROK 3rd corp "mountain" combat engineering, aka 3rd Combat Engineering Brigade. Nope, food is still bad.

It's surprising that you know all the situation haha. I'm Korean and I finished service 2 years ago. And yes the food was terrible and young soldiers(around20 to 27) always went px to eat what they want. I'm sure the money invested for food supply went somewhere dirty. I did service when I was 28 so I was very old at that moment compare to others! Well it was very hard time considering that I'm a fashion designer! medical is covered, if you live on base its covered although getting a house on base is limited due to low number of available homes. living off base you get funding but local leasers and renters know how much you get and take advantage of service members, something i personally think is just plain wrong.
we dont expect much, but it is nice to be taken care of considering what it is we do.

The older veterans who had multi grain rice and kimchee (sp?) to eat had at least a good base that gave carbs for energy and vitamins in the kimchee: A, C and some B. They would had some protein with the whole grain and if there was dried fish in the other side dish. They were running short of fats and protein though daily.

I used to trade field rations with Korean soldiers when I was in Afghanistan. Most of them were much better tasting than US MREs. Also the Korean MRE heating method has a so much better and easier to use

I served 2 years as a Korea Airforce kitchen staff. I'm absolutely sure that all the information exposed through media about Korean army's kitchen is highly exaggerated. Not only kitchen actually. What they show to public is very unnatural and they hide darker side. I saw how they make broadcast on their own taste. Make it simple to understand, there supposed to be 600 people to feed in the mess hall I worked but I rarely saw 450 people coming. They preferred instant food more than offered meal. The food was not good enough because more than half of staffs including me were totally irrelevant to cooking before into army. The menu was worse and the worst thing was that soldiers cant eat as much as they wanted to. We always suffered from a shortage of some popular dishes like meats. You know what we get 150$ a month on average during our army life. A fcking single month. They dont give a shit about their soldiers. Don't ever think it's similar to US army or something.

$150 for national service? Or is that for career soldiers too?

    • @arajoaina

That’s the difference between volunteer professional soldiers and mandatory conscript. Volunteer military pays pretty good bc they have to make it attractive enough for people to volunteer. The US army pay privates pay is much better than most entry level civilian Jobs. It starts out about $1650. a month plus food costs, uniform pay, and housing pay (if married or sometimes if shortage of barracks private scan live off base or sergeants and above can choose to live off base). Housing pay is based on cost of living of area. Many rent cheaper place and keep what’s left. Because of all the extra pay it’s much better than most civilian jobs. You will need to find a job that pays more than $4000 a month to equal military privates pay. How many high school graduate jobs and even college graduates earn $4000 from the beginning? It’s very good to join US military. Maybe in the future when Korea become unified and have volunteer army; it will be good.

theuglykwan that is a conscripts pay. Career soldiers pay and benefits are on par with average civilians pay. Enough to support a family.

It makes me smile seeing how "developed" they are. I served in the Swiss army this year (2017) and we had canned Chili con carne heated up on an emergency cooker along with some bread, raw vegetables and sweets, really tasty :D These were the special cases, usually we had the kind of food you'd eat in the civilian life brought to us out in the fields with trucks. Still hot from citchen and yummy :)

Worked in several factories in Korea, last time in Sacheon City. Food in the Factory is similar to that the soldiers have been served in the Video. Also served in the German Air Force from 1989 since 2001. Food there was good. Once a week a warm breakfast, sundays a boiled egg, 2 freshly baked bake rools for every soldier, jam, butter sausage and good coffee. Lunch was good also, warm meals, soup and desert. Juice , lemonade as much as U want. In the evening a warm soup during the cold period or something similar, Tea, amazing good bread, butter, several kinds of sliced sausage to put on the bread and vegetables. And totaly amazing MRE`s ( EPA ) . The ones U have to heat up in boiling water or so. But I was in charge for power generators so no problem for me. They also contained crackers, jam, bubble gum, candy bars, coffee, tea, drink - powder like country lemon , canned sausage, spreadable cheese and so on. Still have one handy for emergencies...

North Koreans don't have access to CZcams videos. They only have about 10 accessible websites, only allowed to the privileged, and those are all government regulated. Same goes for television. It's all government run. They are literally cut off from the real world. Heck, they are only allowed to cut their hair a few certain ways. And if they managed to escape North Korea, they certainly aren't knocking anything anti-North Korean. Educate yourself before making such a stupid comment.
