- Food is essential to human survival. Regardless of whether times or hard or livable, food is an "absolute". The same principle holds true for the Korean military. From the difficult times of founding the army to the present time where Korea ranks among the Top 10 in the world in terms of economic development, food will always be the number one factor in boosting soldiers' morale and physical strength, as well as a measure for economic strength. This documentary looks into the development of the Korean military after independence through the medium of food.

It's really cool that all the Korean men have that bond. Everyone's served, and they all have that in common.
Everyone's are forced to serve because of situation bet north and south. I am Korean and I did it 2 years ago. I'm a fashion designer with sensitive taste. I did it anyway because I will be criminal if I don't. Yes every men in Korea can share these experiences but just think about how we waste our time at the very young age. Nothing to offend you but just wanted point out that it's not something beautiful. It's something we Koreans can't avoid and do it without our own decision.
wonjoon cha go become a girl, no need serve
@@chonejun Was it that bad? The experience?
@@nikyd1784 YES REALLY BAD. YOU GET TREATED LIKE SHIT. AND PEOPLE KILL THEMSELVES. I tried too.
Really, really well produced documentary. I found it extremely informative and enjoyable for being such a niche topic.
It warms my heart, seeing old Military buddies meeting with each other again for a nice meal
the fact that they were still smiling while eating food during the war just warms my heart:)
they aren't in war
Jongwon Park they were in a short clip they showed:)
+Jongwon Park technically, they are still in war with north korea. because theres only a truce agreement not peace agreement.
+Teguh afianto Yes I know but its much more of a "very cold war" because north korea isn't really all that threatening. I mean they always say that they'll shoot but they never do. Plus their weapons suck like major basketballs.
+Teguh afianto i didnt see them fighting in war
I was in the US Army but got to spend a week with the ROK Army as part of an officer exchange program. Something interesting I noticed is it appeared the food quality for their Soldiers improved the closer you got to North Korea. I spent most of my time with a support unit pretty far in the rear; while the food was ample it was awfully bland and with little meat. But I got a chance to go up to the DMZ and as I went north, things seemed to get better; stopped at a headquarters a couple miles south of the MDL and had a lunch of fried fish. Had dinner within eyesight of North Korea which included beef ribs! Oh, and in all the units I visited the kimchi was excellent.
300Spartans “If the food is good enough, the soldiers will probably stop complaining about the incoming fire”. Frontline incentives, I guess.
The standard of meals for South Korean soldiers is three meals a day, and the cost of meals per day is 6848 Korean (the standard set in 2014, equivalent to about 42 yuan). However, this price is very low relative to the income level of South Korea, because the price of food ingredients in the army is much cheaper than the market price. In addition, the cost of meals for ordinary soldiers has increased from 8790 won (about 45 yuan) to 10000 won (51 yuan) per day, and about 3300 won (17 yuan) per meal. But the prices in Korea are on the high side, so you can't eat very good food.
I remember S. Korean conscripts back in the mid and late 80s. They complained about the food and they used to ask for our socks that had holes in them because they were only issued two! Hahaha. Times have changed but ROK soldiers, marines are born hard. Cool upload though
"Tasty hamburger with abundant meat and vegetables" proceeds to show a brave soldier with peanut butter and jelly on top of his spam
I usually enjoy watching competitive cooking shows like Chopped, Iron Chef and such. But somehow I stumbled upon this and decided to watch. Surprisingly, I found this interesting, informative and enjoyable to watch.
I love Korea.
tasty food? LOL.
I worked at Support & Logistic (군수) and I attended monthly meeting related to food (1종). We always had same problem every week; soldiers weren't eating enough food and cost of disposing left over was increasing every month. Soldiers would rather go to PX and spend their meager salary ($120~$170 per month) to eat instant foods (noodle, frozen meat, snacks, etc.). Military food wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. The cooks did their best, but menu wasn't good.
We requested Support & Logistic HQ to reduce our ration or provide with more meat, but HQ always responded with "cook food better". I thought only my division had terrible cooks (all of 12 battalions). Nope, every division nearby had same problem; soldiers weren't eating.
After a while, HQ finally reduced rice ration per soldier from 800g to 500g, because they would rather reduce ration than provide more meat.
Only if you haven't served in Korean military, you would believe that Korean military serve "good" food to soldiers.
Let me be clear; the food isn't bad, but if I had a choice, I would choose US chow hall over Korean counter part any other day.
I know three people serving now in ROK and they pretty much disagree with you.
are they privates? If so, they have to eat. Ask them again when they are Sgt. or Cpl
If they are really eating ROK foods, then
1) They have very strict CO and Master Sgt.
2) There are a few people who actually like ROK food.
3) Food considerably got better within last 8 months (not cooking, but actual fucking menu)
Edit
Just went to reserve training at ROK 3rd corp "mountain" combat engineering, aka 3rd Combat Engineering Brigade. Nope, food is still bad.
It's surprising that you know all the situation haha. I'm Korean and I finished service 2 years ago. And yes the food was terrible and young soldiers(around20 to 27) always went px to eat what they want. I'm sure the money invested for food supply went somewhere dirty. I did service when I was 28 so I was very old at that moment compare to others! Well it was very hard time considering that I'm a fashion designer! Can you imagine a designer who makes clothes and sketches go for army?! Lol . Well anyway it was very unique experience and glad you mentioned the truth!
lol.... I know not only 3, but more than 300 guys who agrees with John. and I did my military duty as well. :)
@@chonejun wow but you are lucky because I didn't have hamburger in boot camp 😂😂 in my boot camp we just have vegetables rice and sometimes we have meat but hamburger?it's just a dream 😂😂😂
32:44 .... For me is the best part, this lady is wonderful, providing a Mothers touch, just like my sons Korean Mother-in-Law.
When I returned to Scotland after my sons wedding, I knew he had a loving wife from a warm and caring Korean family.
Mothers inspecting and tasting food their sons will eat, the rest of the world has so much to learn from Korea.
Having eaten Korean Army Food in the DMZ, I can tell you its incredibly good quality and very very tasty.
Koreans are great people love from india 🇮🇳 I wish I one day visit south korea
"How many days is this for?"
"This is just for one meal"
"OMGWTFBBQ"
their reaction was funny
The fact that a hamburger can just be ham in a bun just flew by my mind for some reason
Long live korea. We love you
have you noticed every one is so polite,we could learn a lot from these people.
Andrew Howden well its part of asian culture western are impolite
Andrew Howden well its part of asian culture western are impolite a lot of honorific form if you know the korean language
this is amazing, how mothers are involved in the activities !!! i like it
i`m so amazed with the heated food pack
An absolutely terrific documentary. I thought that the 'mother' touch thing with hygiene inspections and food prep was interesting indeed. Seems to work great. Thanks for posting this!
Let's get this out onto a tray!
대박!
First Hand Salute to the ROK Marines. Having served I will say we/others also added Ramen Noodles, and Beef Jerky to supplement our MRE's (anything to make a meal and have some flavor). I bid you Peace.
I used to trade my MRE with thiers... It was delicious!
How inspiring an amazing video.
I ♥ it. :)
this is the best thing i've ever seen
35:53 샤를세환 등장
Superb documentary.
Wow. I was stationed in the 2nd Div. Before that, I was trained in the Army Engineer School. Very strange to see both of them mentioned/appear on screen.
Tbh I think I know why they chose Army Engineer School to film that segment. From my experience, Engineer School had the best food. Much, much better than the food in Army Training Center or the crap they serve in 102 Rep.
North korean Army not going to like this...
They will never see this!!!
1 plate for 100 soldiers. All plastic food too :)
They SK soliders have food to eat.
Dinu cv who cares?
The North Korean military has food to eat! They steal all their food from the locals and make sure they get a full stomach everyday! The military is full but civilians starve
the cook is so handsome 😭 😍
Bishh Wahh They do have a very handsome appearance
Yeah
hung out with a few of these guys so much respect to everyone really a great army
looks very good!
The fashion of the shop Teenie Weenie in the background of the video looked so good!!!😍
2:29 - 2:35 I think I saw Kwang Soo there ... or maybe my eyes is playing trick on me
Im watching this from north Korea
I'd love to see this one updated when they add more to it. Would also love to taste it compared to the U.S MRE's that i have tasted
i see this video because my bias become a military chef😂😂
Good old SPAM hamburgers.
Bernard Summers you can just say spamburgers
32:46 , 45:29 South Korea's secret weapon...
*KOREAN MOM COOKING!*
Glad the standards are high for these fine soldiers.Proud to serve in Korea with KATUSAS 1976-77.
All the freebies and the good life we are enjoying ....we owe it to our veterans. They fought to preserve our freedom
how are you going to be a global leading superpower?
usa: nukes
north korea: nukes
russia: nukes
south korea: field rations
No matter what, we only live once.
I'd rather die eating well and living well.
Nukes? You eat them.
South Korea - never were a leading superpower. As well as North. So nah.
Nukes are useless if you have noone strong enough to use them , food is the most vital thing in war.
Ha! You have no idea how much the US military spends on food. MREs are rarely used and we have mobile kitchens we move around with the soldiers. A well fed soldier is a hard fighting soldier.
If wars were fought like a chef battle then SK would probably win with all the side dishes. Japan would have the cutest bentos!
Interesting to watch.
So down to eat the K ration 💞💞Korean food😍
Good, I'm waiting for my food
Mungyeong is a story that will be etched in time for ever.
Good video
A thousands of likeeeee 💜😉
I never regret I served for my country, it was the best worth in my life, when I was in military for 2 years I kept this mind I'm doing what I have to do because if there were no seniors who protected this country during and after Korean War, my parents couldn't exist, whether they intended or not, there were their sacrifice and I always feel thankful to countries that helped my country
I just wrote it because I saw stupid Korean :(
If no one thanked you for serving your country .. I will thank you, on behalf of my daughter in law (Canadian living in Korea), her husband and my two little grandsons .. be proud that you served!
13:47 ㅋㅋㅋ 샤를형 나왔넹 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
잘봤습니다~.
I can't say any more. Because I'm so shocked at the scenes....
11:18 The Historical footage is the best part about this! Also the biology tech parts are awesome 21:08 Pesticide Residue Test on vegetables 21:36 Nessler's Reagent on meats. I would like to do these test with lab kits! 17:06 The historical analysis of the Korean War's 'turning point' if they have lost the defense map.
I love my country
this looks so much better than what we give in the US
13:44 19:11 35:49 2015년 기자님 와우 젊은 모습.
I was there in Pusan when my ship visited S. Korea. Operation Team Spirit USS Kitty Hawk CV-63.
Nice video and perhaps the US & Philippine military MRE should adapt South Korean MRE heating pouch which is activated by pulling a handle as opposed to water activated heater currently in use by both the US or the Philippine army
We have MREs???
@@ianhomerpura8937 Thanks for telling me about Philippine Army MRE. However, you need a water bottle to use the MRE heater but the South Korean MRE uses a pull cord to activate the MRE heater
@@EpicThe112 I just learned that we have our own MREs. And probably ours is like that because we based ours from the US.
wow interesting
Everyone is very good-looking :)
One thing i like the most about south Korea is " TAEKWONDO " 👍👍👍👍🍁🌼💐🌻🍀⚘🌹🌷
Interesting documentary. I want to know more about what exactly happens in the training because of which they detest it so much, besides food.
Koreans young men look very healthy and sturdy . they look very good in their height , health and teeth
We were stationed next to Korean Artillery. Next to the K-9 kennels was the mess hall, these guys were served alot of Kimchi and rice,soup.1976.
When I was in Korea in the late 60's, as soon as I was elegible for separate rations, Korean friends taught me to cook with Ramen. Ramen and eggs at first and then the variations with meat, cheese...etc...I lived on that stuff for 6 months....it was cheap and good.
when i was in, i remember getting some weird fruits from the ROK units i was attached to. and i never saw the ramen in the field. and i ate a ton of dried fish.
ของเค้าดีจริง
I hope I got this someday 😂
One of the ways by the Korean government to incite pride in the military: bring in the moms for their input on how to make military food!
There's no happier time but meal time in the mili...in any job.
ive never cooked ramen in the bag like that lol. genius
When I don't eat I have trouble going up the stairs; please, feed well our soldiers, your soldiers, all soldiers; they are doing their duty
I am impressed with the korean military doing all they can to improve the most important aspect of military moral boost, food is just so important. Compare it to singapore military I know which is better
So in South Korea a hamburger is just ham with buns.
i still say the idea of mandatory minimum service is good for a nations youth. teaches them discipline and a respect for their country.
something americas youth seems very lacking in these days. nothing wrong with appreciating another country but still love the country you grew up in, its your heritage!! the good and the bad.
you can clearly see all the korean men being veterans of some amount of service to the korean military are much more respectable in just the way they carry themselves.
in my opinion, and story from my dad being in Korea military when he was young, he says that it is bit of waste of time. these youngsters are not paid like US military. Its not a job and no benefit is given like USA. I know that comparing USA and Korea is disproportional. Also, if Korea have benefit like USA many young men will join but no. If it's not mandatory men in korea will not choose to go to military.
Whether or not it is "appreciated" is irrelevant to the point he was making.
of course you aren't paid much its national service.
Back in the day it was patriotism that drove men into conscription not money.
Joe Recon it still is. however we get more benefits today than those who came before us. which if you are to decide to make it a career effort to serve your nation there is very little major impact on home life.
medical is covered, if you live on base its covered although getting a house on base is limited due to low number of available homes. living off base you get funding but local leasers and renters know how much you get and take advantage of service members, something i personally think is just plain wrong.
we dont expect much, but it is nice to be taken care of considering what it is we do.
군인 오빠 역시나 잘생겼다
Watching these nice, young guys, you wonder why an army is even necessary. Hard to imagine these regular guys being killing machines in other circumstances.
someone, said "an army marches on it's stomach"
The older veterans who had multi grain rice and kimchee (sp?) to eat had at least a good base that gave carbs for energy and vitamins in the kimchee: A, C and some B. They would had some protein with the whole grain and if there was dried fish in the other side dish. They were running short of fats and protein though daily.
26:24 : an undicipline soldier has detected :D
I used to trade field rations with Korean soldiers when I was in Afghanistan. Most of them were much better tasting than US MREs. Also the Korean MRE heating method has a so much better and easier to use
I served 2 years as a Korea Airforce kitchen staff. I'm absolutely sure that all the information exposed through media about Korean army's kitchen is highly exaggerated. Not only kitchen actually. What they show to public is very unnatural and they hide darker side. I saw how they make broadcast on their own taste. Make it simple to understand, there supposed to be 600 people to feed in the mess hall I worked but I rarely saw 450 people coming. They preferred instant food more than offered meal. The food was not good enough because more than half of staffs including me were totally irrelevant to cooking before into army. The menu was worse and the worst thing was that soldiers cant eat as much as they wanted to. We always suffered from a shortage of some popular dishes like meats. You know what we get 150$ a month on average during our army life. A fcking single month. They dont give a shit about their soldiers. Don't ever think it's similar to US army or something.
$150 for national service? Or is that for career soldiers too?
That’s the difference between volunteer professional soldiers and mandatory conscript. Volunteer military pays pretty good bc they have to make it attractive enough for people to volunteer. The US army pay privates pay is much better than most entry level civilian Jobs. It starts out about $1650. a month plus food costs, uniform pay, and housing pay (if married or sometimes if shortage of barracks private scan live off base or sergeants and above can choose to live off base). Housing pay is based on cost of living of area. Many rent cheaper place and keep what’s left. Because of all the extra pay it’s much better than most civilian jobs. You will need to find a job that pays more than $4000 a month to equal military privates pay. How many high school graduate jobs and even college graduates earn $4000 from the beginning? It’s very good to join US military. Maybe in the future when Korea become unified and have volunteer army; it will be good.
theuglykwan that is a conscripts pay. Career soldiers pay and benefits are on par with average civilians pay. Enough to support a family.
the mouth cover, It should be implemented to everyone working in kitchen and restaurants
Wow my KATUSA told me how the ROKA puts strawberry jam on the burgers. It was hard to believe until I watched this video. The hamburgers look like SPAM burgers.
U should know burger is not korean food it considering as a snack or dessert. So it colud be savory or bit sweet too.
Gotcha. thanks.
I thought it was red paper paste!
4:58 ahahaaa .. I have the same blister on my right hand from cutting cutting for my family's meals .. lol
Wow. Never knew these S.Korean soldiers love eating food so much.
How to be a korean because i'm not korean but i'm willing to hug and learned korean language and culture
I found the same ramen cooking technique like that at aceh
It makes me smile seeing how "developed" they are. I served in the Swiss army this year (2017) and we had canned Chili con carne heated up on an emergency cooker along with some bread, raw vegetables and sweets, really tasty :D These were the special cases, usually we had the kind of food you'd eat in the civilian life brought to us out in the fields with trucks. Still hot from citchen and yummy :)
I feel like I am watching the Nature Channel and observing wild animals in their habitat.
RedFacedGaming you are describing a US canteen
Very, interesting that, Korean warfare's Riceboal, same Imperial Japanese Army's Riceboal.
now I want to see the North Korea's MRE
"We order more of what the soldiers prefer and decrease the order of vegetables that soldiers do not enjoy." Hmm, that seems sensible, lol.
it's different like the real army
What is the background military music that used in this video that also heard in the descendants of the sun.
Worked in several factories in Korea, last time in Sacheon City. Food in the Factory is similar to that the soldiers have been served in the Video. Also served in the German Air Force from 1989 since 2001. Food there was good. Once a week a warm breakfast, sundays a boiled egg, 2 freshly baked bake rools for every soldier, jam, butter sausage and good coffee. Lunch was good also, warm meals, soup and desert. Juice , lemonade as much as U want. In the evening a warm soup during the cold period or something similar, Tea, amazing good bread, butter, several kinds of sliced sausage to put on the bread and vegetables. And totaly amazing MRE`s ( EPA ) . The ones U have to heat up in boiling water or so. But I was in charge for power generators so no problem for me. They also contained crackers, jam, bubble gum, candy bars, coffee, tea, drink - powder like country lemon , canned sausage, spreadable cheese and so on. Still have one handy for emergencies...
is it soldier 's paradise or ?
I like you pages, but is you put eng sub is the best,I'm Spanish who reading eng best to understand what the people speaking and thing is the same for Latin America, who like KBS dramas English subtitles. Congratulations for you work.(please eng sub)
so...nooo one noticed the weird painting on the wall of the restaurant??? @1:57
why does at 13:55 he look related to kim jung une and also dam I want to one day vistit s korea
The dislikes are from north koreans
North Koreans don't have access to CZcams videos. They only have about 10 accessible websites, only allowed to the privileged, and those are all government regulated. Same goes for television. It's all government run. They are literally cut off from the real world. Heck, they are only allowed to cut their hair a few certain ways. And if they managed to escape North Korea, they certainly aren't knocking anything anti-North Korean. Educate yourself before making such a stupid comment.
K Lab
how can you be so dense? do you even understand what does sarcasm even mean? of course i know north korea doesnt have any internet nor human rights. you're just making a fool of yourself
John Cena nahh...they are from north korean spies pretending to be Japanese foodie tourists in Seoul...ahhhahahaha
K Lab Wow
What's your IQ like? I bet you're American
Look it up and then tell me who has the higher IQ.
Those "hamburgers" looked like spamwiches. Just saying. But the idea of the rice balls sounds awesome. nom nom.
