- So Palworld has taken over the gaming world and social media. While it's not usually a genre of game I enjoy, I'm diving into Palworld and talking about how the creature collection and exploration made me fall in love with a game that has survival crafting stuff in it.
My name's Joel, I'm a game designer and this is another episode of GBU reviews. I'll break down the good things I like, the bad things that need work, and suggest some ugly, back-of-the-napkin solutions that I would have tried if I were on the design team.

To be fair, being nice to your pals is actually more efficient for your base. They take shorter breaks and work longer, and suffer from far less negative conditions like fractures and illness.
Also capturing Humans is meant as a joke, as they're practically useless as pals: They only have one attack option and Handiwork level 1. The only tial humans to capture are the Merchants, which let you buy and sell, but they also tend to not move from where you find them.
you can feed them fruits but i think it breaks their ai. i havent tested it.
Well there's also mods that actually make humans a bit more useful for bases. So I've been adding more to my collection.
I dont think I agree with getting rid of gliders and the grappling gun. I want to be able to choose who is on my team and not be forced to have a spot taken for a glider and another for the grappling gun especially if your a min/maxer really focused on making a great team. You only have 5 spots available.
I do agree with the shared stash and items of all your bases.
Agreed. I don’t want to unnecessarily take up a party slot if I don’t like a glider pal.
gliders and grappling gun are essential combos for me as both can make me travel even further whihout sliding down hill
agreed. glider pals work differently to regular gliders and are typically better so it creates the dynamic choice of having to dedicate a team slot for an amazig glider or choosing a crafted glider making room for a new pal. You need both so players can choose which playstyle fits their needs.
Not to mention anyone who knows how to work with grappling guns combined with pal gliders work together for even better exploration. Have only one or the other takes away the dynamic the technology and pals give you.
@@michaelr3077one of the worst aspects of early Pokèmon is the "HM Slave" where you waste 1 slot just so you can assign your creature all HM moves required to traverse the level. I hate it when I would have been required to catch a Galeclaw/Hangyu just to be able to glide, but if there's a boss battle where you need all 5 pal slots, you'd be short changed just because you needed a glider or something similar.
Glider pals are better than the craftable gliders, but I like to have options.
Honestly, I really don't mind the issue Palworld and Pokemon has. What I do care about is Game Freak to actually feel the urgency to make their games good. Having no competition has made them complacent and care less and less for their fans. Compared to Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Palworld made the perfect open-world game and gameplay(excluding the violence ofc) we wanted, like you said.
Hopefully Game Freak changes for the better, not focus on "investigating" or suing another competition to oblivion and make a game so out there, it reignites the love us Pokemon fans once had 😅
You can actually see which Pal's you have alredy captured by aiming the pal sphere at them. It will either say "Captured!" or "New Pal!" on them.
the downside is you cant tell how much that pal being catched
@@kraizerxthesimp46 You can. Go to paldex and there is extra exp section. You can see number there even if it was completed.
@@kraizerxthesimp46 Yeah but on the video it made it sound like there was "no any way" telling which Pals you have already captured in the wild, even there is such a feature.
And i think if you have already captured those 10 needed for the exp, it says "Completed" on them. IIRC, need to check.
@@Repofox Yeah he might be overlooked it
definitely appreciating the honesty of stating your preferences up front on the topic of survival games... that said, with how much is covered, stating where I agree and disagree would be far too much as far as having a conversation about it for a comments section. but yeah, this video is something I can hold a discussion about for awhile.
Honestly the next best thing to making the visual aesthetics fit together better is to make them clash MORE. Give it an intentional "isekai'd into the wrong genre" vibe. What I know of the setting lore barely even needs much tweaking to make it explicit.
one funny fact, there is one npc, EXCATLY got isekai'd to the palword😂
literally got smacked by truck like good old isekai settings are 😂
Great review!
As a survival game fan, I oddly had a similar underwhelming first 90 mins or so.
A bit generic, but serviceable. But the build pieces are soo simplistic compared to the magic of Valheim.
Then the magic hit when the ore smelting required a fire Pal to operate. With so many different creatures buzzing around, we need a clean build and the path finding AI is still in dire need of improvement.
Buuut from a sandbox crafter interior designer, my mindset immediately shifted to the base design in economy-heavy RTS titles, Dungeon Keeper, Northgard, FTL... now it gets fun! And it makes sense, the CEO, Takuro Mizobe specifically namedropped Rimworld, a colony management game for the behavior of Pals around the base... this game's design is waaay more though out than just a legally distinct Pokémon mod for ARK Survival Evolved. While it's hilarious on visual and sound level how blatantly obvious their many inspirations are... on a mechanical level it's quite genius how coherently they tied it all together into a fresh experience.
Hard disagree on connecting all base inventories. However the current state is indeed tedious. But it would be more rewarding to have unlockable technology solutions for connecting supply lines. A trade depot where you can assign pals for caravan duty?
Also when the major bugs get ironed out, I'd like to see the number of max bases increased from 3 to 10
Yes to that caravan mechanic I've been saying the same thing it just fits
There is survival only at start. Later you have everything covered and you can focus on exploring. There is auto feed for food. Clothes and accessories cover temperature needs. At lvl 7 you dont have to worry about wood and stone. Pal spheres are covered with vixy. You can just put chickpi to ranch and dont worry about food anymore. Unlike pokemon every pal can be super strong. Even lamball can defeat tower bosses. There is no limit to types of moves that they can learn. You can teach them everything as long as you fruits. There are ton of unique animations and some pals have their own attack skills. There are ton of details too like traveling with fire types make it bright during night. Game is rewarding you for your knowledge a lot and make progress a lot faster. You can also create new characters and do different types of runs.
I think it would be cooler if instead of shared inventory between bases, they add functionality to Transporting pals that they can bring items to your other bases. Not actually physically walking there, just have them scamper off and then vanish in an animation, and then after a timer that is longer or shorter based on their Transporting level, they arrive at the other base holding a chest, waiting patiently.
I been suggesting the shipping container can keep item inventory shared to all bases as for right now build cost per inventory the shipping container pretty much outclassed by metal shelf
you played FireRed on a GameBoy color? interesting achievement
If we wanna talk wholesome content, we need a outfit update for our pals. I want to dress up my lamball in funny hats, give gumoss more flowers, make dazzi wear sunglasses.
Bonus: players should have layered armor so we can actually wear different outfits without all looking the same. Many games already do this. Let us be fashionable!
I like most of your suggestions. Especially the shared inventory between bases. I don't really agree with the glider take, as having a pal glider forces you to take 1/5 slots just to get around the map a bit more efficiently.
Removing gliders wouldn’t be that great because I tend to use my flying mount and then jump off and use my glider to cover extra distance.
This is a really well put together video! Shit on my chest
half of what he said :). what half no one knows..
Do what now?
There are like 3 pals who can be used as gliders. It would be so restrictive to force players to use them.
It's like the fast rideable pals. There are only a handful of them, and they're pretty weak in combat. And if you want to ride another pal, you have to capture a lot of them and breed them to get something fast.
I think there's celeray, hangyu, hangyu cryst, galeclaw, and killimari. I might be forgetting one but i agree, the gliders are especially handy if you dont want to "waste" a pal slot on a glider but still want to glide.
Palworld wants to be starbound
I disagree with a few of the things you say, i like the aesthetic they have and the glider and grappling options are great for people that want a specific focus on team comp without having to worry about fully handicaping their traversal. Sometimes a flight pal is enough, but you still want to glide a short distance. Options are good. I do agree that they should probably go over the audio again, and holy crap do they still have crashes if you play on the older gen xbox one and not series. Crashes are pretty common in menus, when flying too fast, or going into caves. Not always, but really common. Great vid otherwise.
You can see the saddles and such you've crafted in the Inventory > Key Items tab. It's right in your face lol. Also, gliders should stay, as things like the Celaray are better as gliders, unless you don't want to commit a pal slot to a dedicated glider.
I think he meant graphical changes, like we craft a harness for foxsparks but don't see the harness when using it's ability. Its the same for all the saddles we made
Ya Palworld is Pokemon in Real Life
i subbed because you watch rdc gaming lol
Pokemon ripped stuff from dragon quest and then Digimon from pokemon. There's not much legal dispute because pokemon has some very suspect designs and ideas in relation to dragon quest. I love pokemon btw, but they got dirty hands too 😅
I disagree with the first catch exp bonus. The game needs to incentivise multiple captures to keep people invested in exploration/hunting. If you only care about first captures then most players would just pick one of everything then never return to older areas again. The 10 catch bonus is intentionally designed to motivate players into the cycle of catching, then rewarding the player with more tech and power. The 10 limit is to make sure players dont overlevel on just one creature. At a certain point players dont need exp as much anymore so to keep players engaged they have the condensing which is the optional task of fusing your excess captures or egg hatches. Condensing is about the best use of your unused pals if you arent going to sell or if you are going to butcher which is a waste honestly (Butchers knife is only useful on captured bosses for the second loot drop of ancient parts). Its the perfect motivation to keep returning to old areas and catching creatures all the time. Its also a reason why you need to be productive at base since you need to keep producing higher grade spheres to capture lots of late game pals. Its nearly a perfect gameplay loop, one that keeps you from staying in one spot and keeps you playing with all the mechanics in a cycle.
seriously how different is leaving your pals in the PC compared to pokemon? At this point condensing is just a means to release them and get stronger. You wouldnt use most of them anyway. But if you need to clear your conscious just say that condensing just magically fuses them into a single conscious, a super being with all the power of its bretheren (alone weak, together strong). Maybe pretend its like monster hunter stories and their skill transfer system, via some magic nonsense a monster transfers its essence then for some reason just leaves... i dunno maybe it just goes back into the wild is what is implied... even though its just a reason for the game to remove a party member for absorbing a skill. Just tell yourself the pals got their abilities absorbed then got released into the wild for their service.
I actually like how the game discourages being violent. death is less rewarding than captures, abuse lowers work efficiency, butchering deletes a useful member of the party for the same loot you get just catching it, and its one less for condensing. I dont get what you mean by the game heavily pushe the violence. You go out of your way to be violent, battle on its own is no worse than how pokemon or any other creature RPG is, again the killing is less profitable and abuse makes production worse. Condensing isnt even mandatory to have a decent team but it is there to maintain the endgame loop for those that need a reason to keep playing. So really its only 1 questionable system that promotes cruelty.
(i guess you can add trapping merchants to work for you as another evil deed but I did save a merchant in the wild being attacked and he actually thanks you for saving his life when you deploy him at base, so I feel more like i recruited him rather than enslaved him)
Also I want to add you dont even need to kill any pals to survive even the tutorial. All loot drops can be gained from capturing, back bonus can even remove the fight all together so not even a drop of blood is needed. Lamball makes the wool you need to make armor to stay warm, cattiva gathers resources (like berries) and chikipi produces eggs, all the things you need to make a self sustaining base right from the start. A pacifist run is definately possible.
9:08 regarding sound, that's way too far. I haven't played Genshin but people say that that game borrowed a lot of elements from BOTW. It is legally distinct, so Nintendo can't sue.
Would never catch me even thinking about defending a multibillion dollar company I don’t work at lmao
thing is pocket pair said its getting too expensive to run the servers 😢 hopefully they don't shut down 🙏😔
They've made millions from this game they're safe for now
Microsoft is heavily invested in pocketpair to the point they actually sent engineers to help them with gamepass optim8zation. They are not going to let pocketpair/palworld fail. I wouldn't be surprised if m8crosoft buys it to directly compete with Pokémon.
'I remember playing Fire Red on my Gameboy Colour'. No you don't....
You're the 2nd person to be adamant about this which confuses me.
I was young at the time, so I could be misremembering things, but a quick Google search shows:
- Pokemon Red/Blue came to Canada in 1998.
- Game Boy Colour came to Canada in 1998
- The Game Boy colour was fully backward compatible with Game Boy games.
But even if I am wrong, does it really change the point? All I'm saying is I played the old games as a kid.
@@gbureviewsFire Red is a Game Boy Advanced title, not a Game Boy Color one. Regardless, which is it, GBC or GBA?
I have played plenty of Pokèmon as a kid at least up to Silver/Gold. However, I could no longer get into the franchise after I got a PC. Some form of nostalgia made me try Sapphire, and Shield, and just after a couple of hours, I'm bored and never touched it again.
Oh lmao, I forgot they did those remakes (Fire Red / Leaf Green).
Man I was so confused as to what was happening, I was like I swear I played pokemon red back in the day. My bad you're right, I played the original pokemon red, not fire red.
And yeah, the newer ones haven't lived up.
Go play pokemon Violet and u will see how trash pokemon has become. The glitches made violet unplayable
Yeah, glad I got out when I did lol. Let's hope Palworld gets Game Freak to innovate :)
It's not that Game Freak has worsened, it's just that they never changed and adapted to better technologies. Many of their senior employees were still the same people who worked on the 2D era of Pokèmon. While they were great in managing the limited resources the handheld had at that time, this is no longer the issue in today's games, and people would like to see Pokèmon play like Breath of the Wild than the same old turn based RPG it had for 20 years where they still recycle the same animation for their common moves.
i dont even have a grphics card and the game runs perfect , 0 crushes
wtf ? really ? what your spec ?

How did you equivalate an unreal engine game with a 2d game that looks like a Diablo rip off. Instantly clicked off anything you say after that is irrelevant
Guess it's a good thing you weren't on the dev team. This is not a Pokémon made for 12 year olds.
agreed, deleting the pal glidders ? connecting multiple base resource ? FIRST TIME EXP ? hell nah, thats bad idea for me. and maybe this person doesnt know if we can check how much we captured using paldeck.
