Movies are Magic: Crash Course Film History #1

- Well, they're not really "magic." Maybe "illusion" is a better way to say it. As we begin this journey of the history of cinema, we need to understand how movies trick our brains into even understanding that a movie is a movie. In this episode of Crash Course Film History, Craig takes us down the road of the very first inventors of motion pictures.

Literally every time he says "happy accidents" I think of bob Ross
I'm pretty sure that's on purpose.
There's an excellent movie from 2001 called Happy Accidents. Twister of an ending :)
Goat
Happy trees?
'there's no such thing as mistakes, only happy accidents'
Stereoscopes....360noscopes....Thanks CrashCourse
Wave MLG :)
I SAW THAT TOO! LAUGHED SO HARD
Me to I'm late
as soon as i saw that , i went down the comments to look in the comments if someone else noticed XD
Lmfaaoooooooo
I failed my film history class this semester because a PROFESSIONAL FILM PROFESSOR was less organized than a public video series. You rock Crash Course. And PBS. And Craig.
I know how you feel!! I'm glad that part of my life is over...
You failed it because you are a bas student. Stop blaming people.
Don't you have a textbook and an access to the internet? You do? Well then you are perfectly capable of learning everything no matter how shitty the professor is.
we don't have film study things here. didn't know that existed..
Любо Манолов i had an exam on animation history. One of the questions ask what did Edward Muybridge do that advance filmmaking and still used as reference materials today. I answered Frame by Frame photographs of animals of many kind. To which the teacher commented: "and humans, too." and deducts 2 points. My bad?
And Thought Café
What, no mention of Louis Le Prince? He was the French inventor responsible for what is still considered to be the oldest surviving film in existence; the Roundhay Garden scene from 1888.
+1! Was super surprised to see this omission. Edison's kinetograph came a couple years after Le Prince's camera.
@@nbaschez le prince also went missing before the release of Edisons's kinematograph, legend has it, it was all le prince's idea
This guy is so abundantly charming it's ridiculous!
Check out his channel WheezyWaiter if you haven't already! He's amazing. :)
Darsh Patel +
Darsh Patel ilovecraig!
That's not his channel. That's his clone's channel.
Or is he the clone?
Hmm....
Nah, really it's Mitzy's channel :D
I hope this will be like Crash Course literature, where the audience gets homework to go and read the book that the next episode will be about (or in this case; which movies to watch before the next episode).
I'm a huge fan of movies and film history, so I am very glad that this series has begun :D
If anything, that would likely be a follow-up series. I have a feeling that this series will focus on film and movies more broadly.
yes! i hope these videos can focus on a movie or 2 every episode and analyze it
i really wanna see an analysis of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Jeppz Postman The first few episodes will probably include the film's in them since early fils were really short. after that, Idk. maybe we can ask for a film list?
There is already some analyses of that on youtube.
Can we get a Crash Course Art History?

I just want to say that Michael Aranda did a wonderful job with the sound design for this episode.
Agreed!
yes!
Crash Course has so many great series at the moment. Sociology, Mythology, Computer Science, and now another one to add to that list: Film History. Only one episode in and it's already super interesting.
So excited for this series
Seconded!
Thirded

Craig's freakin' back!
And still punching eagles!

♥️♥️♥️ for craig. Ilovecraig
Can we get a Crash Course Comics???
SuperCrazyfin but they had made series of video games before, so why not?
NerdSync history or design principals.
Scott, I love your work and listen to everything you do. But the CrashCourse is reading the comments and purposely not acknowledging you. But, JOHN, if it were to happen, Scott here at NerdSync must be the one to carry it out!!!
why not both?
The Emperor hahaha hahaha crash course comics you're killing me
Finally!! You've been working so hard for this series to come true Craig, I really appreciate your effort :):)
Considering that the new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is tomorrow, this is very well timed.
Right!?!?!?! :D

It's funny to me that Craig hosts this course as well as the Government course, because Film and Politics are my favorite hobbies.
I love crash course in general but can we talk about how suave Craig is at this? This is great. I love this.
So excited for this series! My film teacher just doesn't go into detail about anything and I want to learn so much more about film history. Craig is great, I love the little details like the zoetrope and the yellow light in the background nodding to noir.
I am literally crying right now; this is so beautiful. I love Craig/Weezy. I love cinima and filmography. I love Crash Course and PBS. Why am I so hashtag blessed?
What do you mean that's not how you use hashtags?
*gently chuckling*
Ok so I love this ten times more now that I know it's hosted by Craig
I love reading the new introductions. I love how they acknowledged their crew with this one.
Bless you, CrashCourse. Bless you, PBS
#I❤️PBS
I love this so much!!! I hope we get to talk about German Expressionism, because those are my favorite early films!!! :)
I love the art direction of this series! The captions being formatted like a script is a nice touch.
Saw this in my video production class in HS and now I work on live shows glad to see this still up.
Can you all give us general dates and times some of these events took place? I think it would help people see the timeline of it all. Great video! Keep it coming! :)
Yeah but how much was the Edison's Camera Edison, and how much of if was Dickerson's, Edison has a history of stealing credit (and only some times paying for it).
Oh man, I'm geeking out over all the film trivia in the intro's Thought Bubble blips! Excited for more!
They aren't kidding about the "No Spoilers" for The Story of Kelly Gang. If memory serves correct, the film is mostly lost and you can't watch it anywhere. Also it's Australian.
Naturally. The only other people who have even heard of the Kelly Gang are Extra History fans.
Yes!! I'm so excited to continue this series. As a lover of film and hopeful film maker, I am very hopeful for this crash course!
I'm glad CC is giving us more elective. The courses that have been coming out lately have been a lot of fun.
Lol when I took my film final today
Love this man's personality. He's the ultimate film nerd. I mean that as a compliment.
I am so excited about this crash course!! This channel is the best!
I really enjoyed your personality and presentation. Thank you and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series!
I would love it if you guys can do a poll for the next series. Really crossing my fingers for music theory.
5:52 Well, hello Life Is Strange.
Wouldn't that sort of thing belong more on the now concluded Crash Course Games?
Shadow's Vale I had that exact thought
Shadow's Vale You're totally stuck in the retro zone.
Sid *sad face*
Shadow's Vale You don't get the *sad face* until you get to Bay/Bae.
i already love this series!!! hope you get to make more crash courses of art
So excited for this series! Thanks Craig and Crash Course!
Is this series going to talk about animation too? Like Disney cartoon animation?
Orange Boy I bet it will. Lol. Animation is a HUGE part of film history.
Come one orange boy! show me what you've got!
He mentioned mickey mouse at one point, so yeah.
I can't see why he would not bring up animation
He has too. Walt Disney was one of the biggest pioneers in Film History, even when now his bussiness is a huge monopoly and Mickey Mouse is swallowing everything he can touch. Sort of speak LOL.
Ten bucks says Tesla actually invented the thing Thomas Edison "invented" and he then nicked it and claimed it was his idea
I'm so excited for this new segment!
I'm so excited for this series!
weezy!
this dude is so bloody hilarious!
I enjoy your narration. You're dry humor, that is slightly in awkward comes off as authentic and is entertaining. I look forward to more of your videos.
I NEEDED EVEN MORE WHEEZY IN MY LIFE! This is going to make me so happy. I hope everyone who isn't already subbed to him goes and does so bc he's phenom.
Just...Yaaaaaaassssss.
Art history would be awsome
Excited for this series!!
Yay!! My favorite kind of history that I didn't get to study in college but now I get to learn it here! 😃 Looks fun so far! Keep up the great work! 👍
Crash Course Statistics!
They have it now
I'm just waiting here for Crash course mathematics!
Aminoddin Domado "today were gonna discuss when 1+1 started to be 2"*intro theme*
You have a good sense of humor for this job. It's similar enough to the standard crash course humor to fit the crash course script, while being different enough to be fresh and not feel like you're just copying
I have been seeking out content like this! So glad that Crash Course has decided to do this!
We need an episode on anime. Especially Cory in the House, as it is by far the best.
That is live action. Not anime. :/
jeremy miller, that's the joke. :v
Okay, this is the third joke I've seen about Cory in the House being an anime and I don't get it. Please help
#Ilovepbs
i don't believe there is anyone more appropriate to teach this crash course that Craig. Thank you very much, wheezy.
YESS!! I HAVE WAITED TOO LONG FOR THIS SERIES!
Also, awesome covering of the technological advances that led to the invention of the celluloid. Cheers!
"When ET phoned home, he was billed roaming charges." XD
Can you guys please do a Crash Course African History? I really feel like it will be engaging, thoughtful and enriching if done right(and I know Crash Course can do it well)! 😊
This was incredibly fun and interesting! So excited for the rest of the series~ 😄
So is this every Thursday or...
Bullzye yes. That's our plan :)
Crash Course recommends you turn it to 11
:D
Apparently there are stories in that "turn it to 11", but I can't figure it out. Would you please explain that to me?
It's based on a quote from the movie This Is Spinal Tap
Well that's a quite old movie & pun lol, found it in wikipedia with your hint. Lots of thx
Whoever is making the Crash Course intros... YOU SLAYIN' IT BRUH
Great episode! Looking forward to future episodes 😁
PLEASE MAKE CRASH COURSE MUSIC THEORY!!!!
Can we get Doritos Crash Course?
I am so extremely on board with this!!
So glad it's finally here!
Am I the only saw the 360NoScopes???
I saw it too, my friend.
Everyone else got rekt by one before they could see it.
I saw it too
YEAH PUNCH THAT EAGLE
Rarely Funny Punch a Nazi everyday, keep the doctor away.
Hah, comedy gold.
I think Craig is my favorite Crash Course host, his comedic timing and dry wit are spot-on, he makes it all look effortless
Brilliant, thanks for this series. Looking forward to the next one.
I wish there was Crash Course Sports
I can see that happening. Sports starting out with primordial games with ancient people leading away to the first Olympics and national identities being defined by their choice of enjoyment
Black German I know that there was an entire episode or two of the Crash Course Games series devoted to Sports. Might try checking there. 8)
Little1Cave Thanks :)
Make John Green host the entirety of it lol
OUTATIME
I've been meaning to watch this series for a while, so far I'm loving it!
Love the look of the set and lighting!
Every drop of info this video has shared can be found on 1 Wikipedia page. I'm really let down by this video, and I should probably find a dedicated film channel on here instead. This is mind numbingly boring compared to actually learning the art of film, which i thought you'd be focusing on - not the 'history'. Students and lovers of film will be your draw for a series about film; but the demand film lovers have is for art and beauty, not historical facts. We want to create, so inspire us to create. Share something with us we can't find for ourselves with a 5 minute Google search.
The first video in their psychology series could all be found on a tvtropes page. :/
_ Funny thing that the series called Film History spends most of its time on history. Outrage!
Now I'm expecting for some stupid commentaries about how cinematography isn't art.
Camilo Rodriguez Who says cinematography isn't art? It's basically moving photography. Lol.
Noone would say that, but congrats on trying to make yourself feel smarter by comparison to imaginary stupid people.
It's not my problem if you aren't able to get it
Любо Манолов, he's referring to swarms of people that comment on every sociology video saying "Sociology isn't a science" in increasingly smug, self-righteous, condescending, and annoying ways.
I love Crash Course and PBS
I'm prepping myself to binge-learn stuff about movies, and I'm excited. Thanks crash course!
So, Film was "invented" so a pair of rich guys could settle a bet about horses? Sounds like normal US/European history to me...
This and Myth History are my favorites already.
Thank you, as a film student its great to have a fun recourse to look back on and refresh what you learnt in first year.
I can already tell that I'll love this entire crash course
I LOVE your way of narrating Craig, you're AWESOME :D
this is fantastic topic so far . Crash Course team did a fantastic job. I really dig the intro
I'm just so excited that Craig finally is hosting a Crash Course. These bloopers are going to be GOLD.
the sound in this episode was absolutely delightful and charming.
So excited! Just found the film history videos! I love crash course!
Glad to see Craig back on the channel!
I am. SO. EXCITED!!! Thank you CrashCourse and the Green Brothers and Craig!
This is going to be a great series. So excited! I love movies!
Great subject. I think im gonna like this series! Thanks for making it.
Heck yeah more Craig
Love you wheezy
I have never been more excited about a crash course series. I screamed.
love the little nod to nerdwriter1 in the intro! can't wait for the rest of this series!!
I discovered CrashCourse with their amazing Psychology videos and now I see they're starting with Film! One of my biggest passions! Amazing! Thank you guys so much for these amazing videos. Must require a lot of work. KUDOS!
Oh man, I absolutely loved the intro music for this! The progression from the improvised ragtime style played along to silent films up to the modern BWAAA "pioneered" by Hans Zimmer.
That was awesome looking forward to the next episode.👍
The video summary at the end is great, please continue to include them. It would be great to see that done with the other courses as well.
They do that for every crash course video so rest assured :)
YES I'm excited for this series
