The Prep
************************************************************
-Trim all the hard fat and silver skin off the top of the tri-trip. It is okay to leave the fat cap on to help protect the meat during the cooking process.
-Use a binder (we used worcestershire sauce) and rub an light even coat all over the tri-tip. This isn't for flavor, it's just to help the rub adhere to the meat.
-Season your tri-tip with the rub of your choice. We used SuckleBuster SPG and Hoochie Mama, it's a savor combination with just the right amount of spice. I'll link them, and my discount code down below so you can save 10% on your order!

The Cook
************************************************************
-The cook is pretty simple. Fire your cooker up and keep it steady at 250º for the entirety of the cook.
-Let your tri-tip smoke until you have a nice bark or crust, and the internal temperature is around 155-160º.
-At this point you can wrap your tri-tip in aluminum foil with the liquid of your choice, we used beef base.
-Get the tri-tip back onto the smoker, and continue cooking until probe tender (ours was done at 203-205º
-Once it's tender, open up the tin foil, and let the tri-tip steam off, this will allow the bark to reset itself.
-After 15 minutes, wrap it back up in tin foil, and let it rest for 1 hour.
-Slice against the grain, and enjoy!

Great video, very thorough explanation! I personally love this method 👊👊
NeilSarap thank you Neil, I appreciate that! Maybe next time I should try a wagyu tri-tip?! 🤣
Man I watch your channel every time I turn my pitboss on and what I love most about your channel, after watching this video, you are completely honest about everything you do. Even if it isn’t your cup of tea. You’re amazing man. Keep going.
Thank you Paul, I try to be honest and open so people can make an educated decision as to if they want to try something for themselves!
Thanks for the link!
Dude… second video ive watched of yours and the thing that stands out the most is the honesty!! The taste review is not what you wantvto hear but if its the truth? Then im all for it man. Im glad i have your input on this. Definite follow and like from me. Keep up the good work.
Man, thank you. I really appreciate that! I always try my best to completely honest. I’m not ever going to lie in a video to make something seem good, and I’m never going to pump a product I don’t believe in. I think honesty and transparency is important in a channel, and I’m glad you appreciate it. Thanks so much for the comment brother, I appreciate it!
Lookin awesome!
Thanks for watching Tom!

love your honesty brother, nothing beats a mid-rare tri-tip man! 😀😀😀 Great video!
Salty Tales thank you for watching Ninja! I appreciate it brother! And yes, I couldn’t agree more! Mid-Rare is for me! 🔥
What’s the desired interior for a tritip sandwich?
I always cook my tri tips like this! It’s absolutely delicious
I gotta give it a shot again! Thanks for watching!
It's the only way we do it 💯
Looks amazing bro...
Rey Morales thank you Rey, I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate your support bro! 🔥
That looked real good! I’m team medium-rare too, just love the beefy flavour of tri-tip but definitely gonna have to try this at least once.
Thanks for watching G-Rod! It is definitely worth trying for yourself if you haven't, at least once!
I’ve done tri tip so many ways but I do like the medium rare tri tip,it’s always good! Nice one darrin and I’m sure the sucklebusters was good, only had a few of theirs but all good!
Pickles BBQ thanks Charley! Flavor was poppin’ as it usually is with SB! And yes, medium rare is my favorite! This was good, just not what I am used to! Thanks for watching brother!
Great cook Darrin! Ya got some quick knife skills..lol...never smoked one myself, but I'd put that down! Looked delicious..Just did a tri-tip on the El Charro rotisserie, made some philly cheese steaks, great tutorial, thanks for sharing brother, have a great one, stay safe!👍
Hey Craig! Thanks for watching brother! Man, some Philly cheesesteaks sounds delicious! Next time I’m giving that whirl! I appreciate the support, and the kind words. You stay safe as well brother! 🔥
Always thought about cooking a tri tip like a brisket, now I want to give it a try.
It's worth trying for sure! Thanks for watching!
Nice brother! I’ve been meaning to try the brisket style tri-tip... but I agree with you, I prefer a thinly sliced, med-rare tri-tip, reverse seared w/ Chimichurri. 👊🏼🔥💨
What’s the desired temp internal?
Decent! I’ve always wanted to try it but I’m a huge fan of a med rare to med TRI Tip myself. I’ll stick to chuck roast if I want to use a roast and cook like a brisket. Great video m8! 🍻🍻
I agree man, chuck roast only if I am looking to do a pretend brisket! Lol! Thanks for watching Brian!
I did not know at first that you were overcooking it on purpose. LOL Great experiment! LOVE THE VIDEO and thank you!
Haha, it felt like a sin! Thanks so much for the feedback, and taking the time to comment!
I like how you put the spices on lightly! I see so many videos where they dump so much spices on the meats and I just keep wondering why so much. I just bought a Pit Boss smoker grill and am trying to learn how to cook on it.
Hey Patricia, big pieces of meat can handle a lot of rub! But smaller ones require less! Thanks so much for watching!
Tried your recipe today with our rubs. Came out good I like tri tip, and like it rare. However my wife is a well done, cook the life out of it. So this recipe worked well no pink and very tasty.
Good deal!! I also like it rare, but had to give this a try! I am so glad you had success with it!
You're right, hard to beat a medium rare tri tip over charcol
Yessir!
Very nice brother!! 🔥🔥
Tyler Terrell thank you Ty! You’re the man dude, and I appreciate all of your support! 🔥
good vid dood!!!
Thanks so much Harry!
My wife makes great tri tip on the propane grill, and it's a good as I have ever had.. I'm from the Santa Maria area, and have ate LOTS of tri tip. I was going to try this, but now don't think I'm going to. What do you think of smoking for an hour or hour and a half to get some smoke into it, then dropping it on the propane grill to get it finished? Seems like it would be a great tasting roast?
I've definitely reverse seared it. Smoked on the kettle and then finished on a gasser.
This is the only way I cook tri-tip now.
Awesome!
Nice cook! When you sliced towards the end of the tri-tip, the grain of the slice kind of looked like a prime rib....minus the delicious fatty part.
Edward Chan thank you! Haha, it does kind of look like that now that I go and look! Now I want prime rib 🤣
With the fat cap in place about a half inch is nice
Looks good man! Got a video on doing a tri tip your regular way?
Not yet! But I can definitely do one! I’ll add it to the list Mark! 🔥
@@AshKickinBBQ thanks for the response! Looking forward to it!
@@markgould2170 you’re welcome! Thank you for watching and reaching out!
Hey Darren what is your real thoughts on the lockhart grill ?
I no longer own it, so that’s about all I need to say lol. It’s honestly not a bad cooker depending what you’re doing with it, I just think there are better options.
What did you use for a spritz? Beef broth?
No, apple juice, apple cider vinegar, or water is all I use.
When u put the tri in foil did you raise the heat
300 the whole time.
I thought I heard 250 on the video so that’s what I did and tri still came out juice but thanks brother
@@jonathanreyes2296 crap, I was thinking this was my brisket video. I believe it was 250° the whole time brother.
I am going to do this. My wife wont eat medium rare. I love it rare to medium rare, but you guys know how it is!!!!!!!
Cook two ;)
@@AshKickinBBQ That's exactly what I did.
tri tip is meant to be hot and fast if not it just turns into ca crock pot roast when wrapped.
Thanks for watching! I prefer reverse sear over completely hot and fast, personally. 🔥
Audio sucks get a mic 🎙 like a Rode Go so I can hear 👂 you
This was the last video I did without a mic. The audio quality is better now. Thanks for the feedback.
