    As I watch this and having been at a few Dennis DeYoung "live" concerts where he performs this song, it reminds me of the absolute incredible vocal range he has even in his advanced years, he can still hit those high notes and he is still singing in the same key as when he originally recorded these songs in the 70s/80s. Very few singers can still hit the high notes in their older years including myself. As I got older, I lost the high head notes and falsetto's but I gained a much lower bass range which opened me up to country music which believe it or not, I can't stand the sound of but I do it because now my vocals are perfect for it. Styx with DeYoung was one of my favorite bands.

    Dennis DeYoung wrote this track after watching an episode of Frontline on PBS about an automotive plant with just one employee. The plant was fully automated and dark - no lights; the robots didn't need them; only that one human employee did. He was horrified because this level of automation would put people in Chicago and Detroit out of work - uncles, neighbors, people he grew up with. That's when he wrote the verses "the problem's plain to see" etc. because too much technology of this magnitude can put people out of a job. It's even more scary now than it was then - the only threats in the 80s when DeYoung wrote this were vocoders and drum machines. Today, any random jamook with AI can make deep-fakes of Larry, Tommy, and JY singing. The sky (or the bottom of barrel) is the limit. But the redeeming part of it all that lets Larry, Tommy, and JY sleep at night is this: no robot or AI can play or sing with conviction! There's no dehumanizing THAT! 😊 This is a difficult song to sing - period. And for anyone - Denny or Larry - to nail those high notes at thier age?!? That's raw human talent right there. Aint no virtualizing that! This video is proof. Larry nailed it out of the park ... ❤

    Props to Lawrence Gowan; he performs Mr Roboto incredibly well, though I wish he would have given specific credit to Dennis DeYoung. I grew up in Chicago on the Southwest side and bought my first synth at Two Brother's Music, where I once met a couple of the members of Styx. Amazing guys. It's kind of sad when remaining members of "Styx" refer so negatively to some of the songs that made them famous.

    • @doublestrokeroll
      @doublestrokeroll Před měsícem +3

      Sometimes it takes a while for people to get over the way a song evolves. This song has kind of come full circle. It was very different when it came out and quite creative. But it also had a very dorky side to it even for it's time and 80's keyboard driven music. In an era of hard rock and machismo it was pretty easy to write off just on it's tones. It was almost like Polka rock or something. Just not cool.
      But the great thing about time is allows you some perspective about things. And when you step back from it and look at it from an writing and arrangement perspective, it's actually pretty brilliant. And when you approach it from that aspect you realize (those of us who thought it was lame back in the day) it's actually a really good song. Melodically as well.
      I get why members of a band grow to resent certain songs for various reasons. Maybe some of them are still stuck in that phase of embarrassment about it's dorky side. Gowan understands that when you strip it all away, all the talk, and poking fun about it, what you're left with is just an amazingly well written song. When you can let go of what other people think and see it for what it really is, then you've achieved true musical appreciation. It's hard though...even musicians aren't immune to that kind of bias.
      Another example would be Safety Dance by Men Without Hats. People made fun of that song too but it's also an absolutely brilliant song, and it always was.

    It's cool to see this, and I think Gowan does a very admirable job on this song more than any of the others he covers, but shouldn't this video have been made by Dennis Deyoung? The genius that wrote the song, sang the song, played the synthesizers & produced the band (but wasn't always credited). Ya know, the man that was kicked out because he didn't want to live his life on the road like the others with 100 tour dates a year, but really made the band what it was. Deyoung's work in the band was brilliant especially from the debut record through this album Kilroy was here. This was the album that broke the camel's back. Brilliant all the way, sold over 2 million copies, a huge hit single, but rejected by it's own band! He was kicked out the first time for writing a #1 hit, but this time it was too much for the band to bare so they broke up. Only Styx! Any other musicians would have been truly grateful.
    As a rock keyboardist myself, Dennis Deyoung was probably my greatest inspiration as a synth player (maybe about equal with Tony Banks in Genesis). Truly brilliant as this song clearly demonstrates. And shame of it all was, after the huge rejection from Styx, he never really played synths the same way ever again because he lost all inspiration to do so when his own band hated his work, even though loved by millions of others. His keyboard work on Kilroy was here was phenomenal! I would have loved to have heard more, but Tommy quit the band and things were never the same again.
    It is great to see Gowan so excited to sing & play the song and tell the others they were wrong about this period of the band, and show them how many fans were excited to hear it again.

    May 19th, 2024 - 2:57am. Sometimes I think Styx and The Flaming Lips are actually the same band. They both put on amazing live shows too. They should tour together. I'm "coining" (pun intended) the tour's name as: "An Evening With The Flaming Styx". Maybe just a handful of shows... At least one epic one in Milwaukee, cause that's where I live. How about the Riverside Theater? Or Fiserv Forum?
    Besides the condition for coming up with the idea and tour name of a guaranteed stop in Milwaukee, would be that both bands play each other's songs together. So it's basically one big epic band.
    There is so much opportunity here!
    Am I wrong?
    Can we make that happen Styx and Lips fans? It's out in the universe now so anything is possible, right?
    Would this be a show you would want to see? I know I would! Thumbs up to vote yes!
    How about it Lawrence Gowan and Wayne Coyne? What say you?

    Love this song. But I never understood the word "Modren". Inquiring minds want to know!
