its always funny to hear how these companies boast record profits year after year paying massive bonuses for ceos and other executives and then they turn around and say "inflation is killing our business so we will cut your jobs to later offer them to new employees at much lower salaries to avoid paying anyone more". the amount of people i personally know affected who thought their job security was solid even after good performance reviews who had just made a new purchase of a car or home now have to hope that another company will take them on to avoid the banks from taking their loans out from under them.

U have interpreted the layoff reason more correct than most and most. Wave started around 2022 Sept. Not ending yet. Recent Cisco 4k layoff too me is understood as not AI reason.

Don't get too upset on such news. Layoffs have always happened and they'll always be back hiring soon after a point. You'll land up somewhere.
employment rate doesnt say anything... I can be fired from a FAANG company and work as a McDonald's chashier, the umemployment rate will remain same... since both are jobs.
Without a doubt there is excess number of resources in technology areas in almost every company. I personally know at least in 3 to 4 large companies where significant percentage of software engineers/data engineers/middle management have not more 10 hrs. of work in a week.

little bit of devops? devops consists of git,linux,ci/cd tools,docker,k8, IaaS tools.........etc etc. its an area in itself. have been an infra engineer for 10 years in places like AMD & MSFT. you cannot remember all the skills if you are not working in that. just watching online videos is not going to help. i still recommend strengthen your DS&Algo skills, read DDIA, get an understanding of ML & DL if you are interested in a ML position or MLOps position. nothing more is required for clearing an interview
There is a huge difference between a programmer and software engineers. Those who are advanced degree holders know how to build software architecture and frameworks versus writing simple programs to do something. Optimised, scalable, fast software architecture is still game for software engineers.

But at the end of the day industry experience teaches more than advanced degrees. I don’t totally agree with CBS on advanced degrees losing value but some truth to it for sure

I have seen 19 Year old super talented kids working in bleeding edge (on scalable OVP platforms) of kinds that designs and builds their own keyboards in spare time after being on special internship at firms. So, yes, there are avenues for certain type of talent to by-pass the degree. However, to weed out true talent - we still put people to grind and subject them to university process to really understand how much they know about the era of ChatGPT.
Apart from that being at uni does not only constitute on how much one knows. It is about camaraderie, experience ups and downs, pressures, building relationships with other students, learning how to team up, lead, solve problem in group and preserve sanity when pressure of managing people hits them. Those are defining intangible aspects that are important for humans to learn.

Lmao its not as easy as harnoor makes it sound. Trust me he himself found the job in 2021/22, he donot know the current market. Ask the actual grads on youtube who went to US, even the ones who went to ivy leagues are not able to find a single job after applying to more than 700 companies.
The software dream is gone, prepare in India and try to do well here, invest in some business because the field is way less rewarding and way more stressful than once it was.

I am from the product side. I do UX/UI with 17+ years of experience. I am on the bench since Jan 2022. It’s hard to get an interview too. Same jobs getting reposted or you apply and within few hours you get rejected. The salary or hourly rate is down. UX/UI used to be and still counted as top skills but there are so many of them are currently are without a job.
Really scary and concerning scenario!!! May be the future jobs in Tech industry is not for people over 35 years of age.

H1B has a cap of 80k/year. And it is a three year visa. So, at any given point, there would be 240k H1b visa holders. 30k of 240k is 12.5%. I will leave the discretion up to the viewers whether 12% is high or low. And from what he said, it was 30k for the year 2023. I am going to make an assumption that these 30k layoffs would take place mostly for freshers (cause companies most of the time want to cut dead weight, ie not spend money on training). That makes it 30k layoffs for 80k visas given out. Now the revised percentage would be 37.5%. Yikes....
yes layoffs happened mostly to freshers who were fresh grads or had 1-2 years of exp which is a big bummer because a lot of these guys will have to come back to India

@@deepmedsing9961 fr bro I was gonna go for masters in us for Fall22 term and I also got admits from 3 universities but cancelled at last moment due to family issue. Now ive applied again but to universities in Ireland since some of my family members live there. Tech Job market overall in the world is kinda volatile rn. And I also saw the videos and reports last month of us-mexico border where hundreds were entering illegally.
@@abhisheksathe123 unless u are going there to learn something new/niche or do some research, I would suggest not to go any Fiat currency based economy. Interest rates are not going to come down anytime soon, inflation is going to be high and cost of living is going to unbearable for immigrants. So if you are thinking that Ireland would be a safer option, think again. If u have some research in mind, look for scholarships (very hard to come by sponsored research scholarship programs these days)..but if u think masters and then 150k+/year salary would suffice think again…wait for UK elections next year… if Japan starts dumping US treasury bonds (very likely) followed by china…interest rates are going to go higher and layoffs even more frequent.

In tech you have to study and acquire new skills all the time. If you do not do that, then you will not progress up the ladder. College degree is just the start. Then you need to get IT certifications or atleast IT courses that companies needs skills of.

UBC doesn't have direct entry to CS in 1st year , you decide your major in 2nd year (not guaranteed that you'll get cs btw depends on your grades) afaik
