  • This is an effective throw that starts with a leg grab. Whether the leg grab takedown doesn't work or if the attacker simply wants to use the initial leg grab to set his opponent up, this is a powerful throwing technique from sambo. Derrick Darling coaches and demonstrates with Aric Weaver with commentary by Steve Scott. This video was taken at John Saylor's Shingitai Training Camp, Perrysville, Ohio, May 2, 2015. We've posted a video of this technique before but this video is a bit more in-depth. We hope you practice it and use it with great success.

Sambo is very underrated despite already have produced some champions in the UFC like Khabib, Islam, Petr Yan, and Taktarov. There's ofcourse also Fedor in other organisations. As a striker this is my favorite grappling style.

That is a beautiful throw! And yes it looks like a WWE finisher. Also, the guy talking from behind the camera sounds like Johnny Cash.

Maybe I sound like Johnny Cash when I talk, but I sure can't sing like him. Glad you like the throw. Please tell others about our channel and thanks for watching.

can we perform this throw without following him to the floor? sometimes there r times where i dont want to meet my opponent on the ground

I doubt it, but give it a try in practice-if you believe you can do it safely. This is a total commitment throw. My advice is that if you want to throw an opponent without landing on the floor or mat with him, it would be best to try a different technique.

yes, i see now. it feels so much more natural to follow up to the ground. however i do find that performing this technique to slam him on his side into the ground in front of me is a good alternative, then i can follow with a leglock or toe hold. i just dont have a very stable ground game unfortuantely :/
EDIT: i realised ive been doing it a bit differently. i hold the leg next to my side, and his hips directly on top of mine. Is there another technique i can use from the leg grab where i dont have to follow him to the ground? thanks!

Often, the simpler leg grabs such as the single leg grab (Ashi Dori) work. I think we have a video on what we call the Single Leg Dump which is pretty much a leg grab that takes the opponent to the ground and gives you an option to pursue or to remain standing.

      You might. Be careful.

probably don’t do it on concrete unless it’s in like self defense ‘cause you’d probably go to court
