    Keeping oil level close to the max is the key on m156 to ensure timely oiling. For those looking for a detailed m156 head bolt DIY, I have one on my channel.

      That’s true. I also drive my car in M mode or limit the gears so that the RPMs are always about 2500 to ensure enough oil pressure to push it to the top if the engine.

      Just curious ..nowadays how much does 156 head bolts replacements will cost @ an Indy shop ? How much do you charge ?
      I’m actually thinking about doing it myself but I have no tools. 🤣

      @@enzoi9569 if you do it yourself (again, I have a DIY video on my channel) it costs about $350. If you pay someone it’s 10 hour job. So ask them how much they charge per hour.

    Good and informative video. For us home mechanics, however, who do not have access to Mercedes official service manuals, we would love to see torque specs and a list of the special tools you use to keep in place the cams before removing them.

    First time I've seen the plates fixed that way and I must say I love it! I hate how Mercedes and other companies charge extremely over exuberant prices for these plates that I'm sure are made pennies on the dollars. Thanks so much for showing an easy way to fix this issue.

    as a MB tech i have always wondered what failed inside of these, of course they are cores so i could never take them apart and look. I also do these a ton on the M271 EVO, good to know!

    the head bolts on my r30 m156 went bad a 62k miles. I had aftermarket insurance and the covered everything which included head bolts the hydraulic pump for the suspension and both front struts. afterward the m156 is a dream

    Thank you for these great videos.
    I have a 2006 C280 with a 272 engine that has this problem on the left side (driver) cylinder head. The previous owner neglected they car by NOT changing the oil frequently. These multi cam/ flex cam engines need clean oil and correct quantity of oil or they fail in many ways.

    It looks like a tricky job, replacing the head bolts without disturbing the head gasket , was it difficult to clean out the oil from the block holes to prevent hydraulic fracturing?

      Actually tasos Moschatos would not change the head bolt without changing the head gasket as it disrupted even if you do each bolt one by one

    wow. I didn't realize how soft those plates were. i have this going on with my M156 and fighting with the dealer to get them to fix it under warranty.

      They look like they're probably made with a powdered metal process and didn't get proper heat treating.

      @@SeishukuS12 Sintered stuff is normally used where it is too hard/expensive to machine.
      It would probably be way cheaper to machine a simple part like this, especially if it is soft metal.

      @@coast2coast00 normally, yeah, but it can also lend to mass production as well... In high numbers it would likely be cheaper for a sintered part.
      The surface and edge finish kind of look like a sintered part as well, though that could also be just a tumble stone polish.

    Don't forget the lifter buckets.. lol that is the main problem.. intakeside doesn't get enough oil

    I am genuinely curious about how the underside if the head bolts corrode, what are they coming into contact with that can make them corrode? Also hopefully the person making the replacement plates for the cam adjuster is making them out of a more durable metal, if so they should be the go to replacement anytime someone works in the cams.

    The m156 is beast for power gains. From a reliability standpoint id much rather take the m113 na.

      I got 180000 miles on my beautiful 2000 w163 ml55 with the m113NA , she runs like brand new. No one sells aftermarket upgrades for her though.

    Those bolts look fine. Just some light surface rust. At that rate of corrosion it looks like it would do the same mileage again without causing a problem. But since the covers were coming off anyway it makes sense to do it now.

    Yeah, you can almost replace the cam adjusters (Nockenwellenversteller is a much more beautiful word) when you change the oil filter in the M156. 500HP for a naturally aspirated crossplane V8 was probably too much to ask for.

    I have a 2008 s63 with original headbolts. The car has 120k miles. Should i change the Headbolts?
    Or it shouldnt be a problem at this mileage since its already 120k?

      Those bolts are torque to yield, they gotta go down and hit the bottom for real, if not it’s over.

    Dude your videos are awesome! Help me so much with my c63 head bolt job. Question I have in case you see this, did you put RTV on the new head bolts? Any specific type needed for that? Also, with the cam adjusters, how do you get them back into their correct position if after you take them out, they are slightly misaligned? This happened on my c63 because the hole in the gears isn’t threaded so all I was able to do is stick a 5mm bolt in there to hold them in place however upon removal, they are about 1/8” misaligned. My buddy working on the car with me says they can be payed back into place with a flat head. Just curious if you have any tips or tricks on how to do that without risking damage of the cam adjuster. Thanks!

    This summer i will be doing my cam adjusters. Since the camshafts will be off its quite obvious its no or never to also do headbolts. BUT, my m156 has 166,000miles. No record of anyone doing them. Vin is in the affected range.
    My main question is when you reinstall the camshafts does the cam holder tool put them back in the correct position as when you removed them?

      Hey brother be careful when you remove those head bolts. She got a few miles on her and then damn bolts get so corroded they snap. I seen it it’s a nightmare, god bless and good luck bro.

    You can easily drive with night vision watching a screen the only bad part is 0 depth perception. I drove with night vision while serving in Afghanistan one of the lead vehicle in one of our convoys drove into a deep hole lol I was a mechanic with the tow truck so I had to pull him out not bad just deep enough to get stuck and damage the rollers used to protect against IEDs.

    I'm not familiar with these engines but could you have just rotated the plate and mill a new hole in between two other mounting holes?

      Yes but the metal is soft and will wear out in another 50-70k miles. The metal in the welding rod is measurably harder and should therefore (in theory) be a big boost to the lifespan of the adjuster.

      @@FILTHY-YOGURT That is a good point, but I believe any increase of wear on the pin would be negligible. The spring applying pressure to the pin is fairly weak and it's a polished surface against a polished surface. The pin is also rounded and less likely to "erode" on the tail edge that drops in hole. These guys are smart and came up with a simple, efficient, and cost effective way to extend the lifespan of a poorly designed component. 👍Just my opinion as an experienced MB tech.

    I found a c63 Amg 2009 guy said they changed the head bolts an after that it started to misfire 1-3 cylinder it has 155k miles his asking 8k what could be the problem
