I've replaced a lot of hard drives, RAM, network cards and batteries in laptops, but NEVER have they been so hard to access! What the heck HP?!? Thank you for this video...I had NO idea how to get the hard drive out once I opened the cover. Turns out it was super simple...it was just a first time I had encountered this type of set up.
I feel the same way. Never did I think they would give no access to the hardware.
This is absurd. Reminds me of the Chevy Monza from the 70's. You had to lift the engine to get the spark plugs out. They need to make the hard drive accessible through an easily removable panel in the bottom of the case. That's what good laptops have. And while they're at it, all the dimm sockets should be easily accessible too.
Thanks for posting this video - it was very helpful.
It's a cheap laptop, not a good one. They must give customers a reason to invest more ...

Thank you very much for posting these clear instructions. I was stuck at trying to remove the "mylar" screw covers. I was worried that I might damage the back of the base. Watching you remove them gave me the confidence and know how to pull them off.
Happy to read that video was useful.
Thank you .
Have a GOODTIME.
Those little screws under the DVD drive were too fine for any screwdriver I could buy, so I welcome your suggestions for getting screwdrivers finer than PH00. In the end, I broke a little bit off the tip of an X-Acto blade and used that as a screwdriver. Useful tips: when inserting the DVD drive back in, hold the laptop on an edge, not flat.
Thank you again for this video. I say again, because I've needed your video two times. First time was to replace the HD. Today? Replaced the cooling fan. It's even easier than the HD replacement, which is indeed pretty darn simple to do. I appreciate how you move right along and don't waste time! Kudos to you!
I would very much appreciate if you could send me the product number to replace the cooling fan, or where you ordered it. I want to make sure I get the right one to replace mine. Thanks
Thanks a lot for your simple steps to show how to removing a laptop hard drive. Before watching this video, I was really confusing to do that. Now, I know exactly how to do this😀😀😍🙏
My hard drive just died and this video was the first one I saw that had the same Laptop body as your one. Thankyou for the very clear video of how to remove the base. 🤗
The ssd hard drive in mine is like two printed circuit boards fastened to the plastic mount. It also has an empty ram slot that would take another 8GB stick.
Happy to know that the video was useful,
thank you, have a GOODTIME....
Excellent video, thank you. We had trouble with just two screws at 01:58. We thought we had removed all the screws until a friend alerted to those two screws. This was our bad.
Thank you so much!!! You have no idea how much you helped me with this old model!!! Your videos, even after so many years, are still relevant! ;-)

i think they need more screws.
😂😂😂
thanks, I was having a hard time getting the cover to click back on your video helped many thanks
I still can't get the back off! U make it look easy. Mine didn't pop off like that.
I know it's some right bullshit (not the video, but the laptop) so many screws.. Made it very overwhelming!
There were some extra screws on my disk drive
There's an extra screw under the rubber strip. Carefully peel it back from one end, to just over half way peeled off. Unscrew the the screw, the put the same end of the rubber strip back into the end of the groove first, and then press down on the rubber strip from that end toward the middle of it. It will fit that way. If you go the other direction, the end you peeled off won't fit right.
This was CRAZYYYY HELPFUL THANK YOU VERY MUCH… i subscribed and wrang the bell.
Thank you very much, have a GOODTIME....
Hp really need to make it easy to replace hdd and rams in their laptops
I think they do this on purpose ..... GRRRR
Well me with my big brain turned laptop into pc hmhhm
They have one main shell on the bottom of the Elite books for business use. No one in any IT position would ever buy these ones here for office use as they are constantly changing drives for images that is why HP has one main bottom shell on the Elite series so you can access the ram and drives in 1 minute.
They don't _need_ to, but they _ought_ to. It's unlikely that they _will,_ though, because the harder they make it for individuals to repair or upgrade their laptops, the more new laptops HP is likely to sell. There's a term, "planned obsolescence" -- technically illegal, but easy to skirt/hard to prove if the manufacturer goes about it in a sufficiently subtle way.
Thanks to your video, upgrading to SSD on this laptop was super easy, barely an inconvenience.
I did have one problem: one of those flat silver colored screws under the optical drive was in too tight and stripped immediately upon trying to turn it, so I had to carefully drill the center to loosen it a bit, then pried it out with a small flat screwdriver (note to anyone else attempting this, wear eye protection, as I got smacked in the eyeball with the screw). Had to reassemble with just the one screw in that spot instead of both, but everything is fine.
Thank you, my friend! Very helpful step by step video. The DVD screws were a pain though. Having an SSD in the laptop is worth it. Cheers!
Happy to know the video was helpful,
Thank you, have a GOODTIME.
Even with the volume turned up to 100% on my system, I could barely hear what you were saying. But the video was still very useful, since I had to upgrade a hard drive in this same laptop and I hadn't opened up one of these before (I work on Dells usually). Thanks!
Sorry for low audio, happy to read that video was useful, thank you for watching and commenting as it will help me to improve.

Thank You helped me find the last 4 screws.
You are most welcome,

Where do I buy the hard drive you are replacing
What screw driver did you use for the one's below the CD drive?
Thanks a lot for your demonstration, Sir. You saved me a lot of time.
Such a complex operation just to remove the hard drive
SUPERB tutorial video and clear explanations.
It is a great pity that these machines are so shitty!
Thank you for watching the video, have a GOODTIME...
Great video. Very concise and gets straight to the point.
Thank you for watching and comment, have a GOODTIME.
wow, great video. Got ram upgraded and a new SSD. THANKS
Thank you for the tutorial my friend. It helped me a lot!
Happy to know that the video was helpful.
Thank you for watching, have a GOODTIME dear friend.
Please I need to know where to get the connector that attaches to the hard drive because I want to see if it’s faulty before buying a new drive, is that possible? I spilled water on mine and it was working for a few days then suddenly went to a black screen. Is the drive more likely to fail or the cable? Thx so much😊
Thank you so much for this video. The laptop is awesome, it's the shit slow 5400rpm mechanical HDD mine came with that kills its performance! Literally takes 5 to 10 mins just to boot Windows 10, don't even get me started on the updates, lol. Can't wait to put an SSD in mine.
Thank you for watching, have a GOODTIME.
Good to know. I have got my Pavilion 15 ab118ng a couple of days ago and the hard drive is so god damn slow. It's also 5400rpm. A reboot takes around 2-3 minutes and 4-5 minutes in total until you can use the notebook properly. Have to get a SSD asap.
If your laptop is new, bear in mind the warranty before doing this. I swapped the HDD to an SSD in mine not long ago (After the warranty expired), it is 100% worth it (Boots in seconds!!) Also, I recommend doing a fresh install of Windows 10 onto the SSD (Using Microsoft's website to get the ISO and burn to DVD or USB, don't use the restore method in control panel, it's not worth it). After install, the license will auto-activate as it is tied to your hardware.
Also, if you're not in a hurry to swap your drives (Again, bear in mind the warranty), then you can always first reinstall windows 10 with the method I mentioned above onto the 5400rpm HDD. This is because the default preinstalled version comes with crapware and unwanted junk. You'll be amazed at how many gigabytes you will save just by doing the fresh reinstall alone.
And of course, always backup your data before hand!
Best of luck!
@@LeePhillipsLive what did you do about the drivers?
@@NateTheKid Windows 10 will automatically install all drivers once freshly installed onto the ssd. :)

Thanks...great video...good details. Could use more volume so that you are sure not to miss the details. Good Job.
Thanks. Unfortunately for me the idiots had put 2 rivits in the slots where the DVD drive is making it nigh on impossible to access the innermost pieces
I forgot where a couple of the screws were. Thanks for the reminder.
Thank you for this it has been very helpful

Thank you for this awesome video, it is extremely helpful for anyone that want to get access to any inside components not only the hard drive. I have only a minor question, and please excuse my ignorance but can you tell me what is the screwdriver type and size that you used to unscrew those two little screws placed under the optical drive(that you removed to get access to them- starting at min 1:30)?
Brilliant what can I say Brilliant never found all them screws so well hidden.
More like chinese puzzle box
Hi, how about I have an hp pavilion notebook - 15-ab188ca with 8gb drr3l ram.
As to know what to buy to raise it to 16gb but I do not know if it has a single dimm or two and what speed it can hold.
Thank you!
very good the video
Do you remember which screwdriver head was used to remove the 2 screws beneath the optical drive. I am stuck at this part.
Same here
@@ben2cameron after few hours of trying I was able to unscrew.
@@RamnathMallya with which screw !!
The vidie was excellent. As one person said, you moved right along, so so many videos wate time chatting or getting off on a tangent. HOWEVER, I agree with one other comment, for 80% of the video or more, it was impossible (at least for me) to hear anything you were saying! Please try to work on the audibility of your videos! THANKS!!
I actually counted all the screws after taking them out. It is absolutely 100% ridiculous that this thing is held together by 23 screws......
I have a question, we have the same model of laptop.. My problem is, I can't install operating system in my HP Laptop it does not boot to the USB Drive and will restart if I install OS. Do you think it has faulty SATA Cable?
I removed the cover but i did not know how to replace the hdd
Thank you for this video - It really helped me a lot.
I need help. I have 2 computers of the same computer. One has a cracked screen with windows 10. The other one has windows 8. I would like to know if they are swappable?
Thanks for the video, very useful.
Thanks. This video made my day
Great video, thanks very much for the simple teardown - just did mine in under 10mins! 👍
nice video...how many slots are there for RAM module
That’s replacing the HD, is there a spot in the HP Pavilion for a second HD?
Is this a SATA thing or what? I don't know much about harddrive styles. What interface style, and what size, should I look for when upgrading to SSD? Is this a 2.5" drive that this laptop comes with? Can this laptop be upgraded to SSD?
Any suggestions on how to open the CD part? This computer no longer turns on.
Sir, what is the model number of the hdd , ToshibaHDD
Good evening, nice video. I have the same model but my motherboard is dead. do we find replacement motherboards? Please, it's urgent, thank you for answering me
If the motherboard is dead then the laptop is dead. Rip the harddrive our as per this video and purchase a new computer.
I have a HP Pavilion 14 which has no hard drive fitted only SSD M2 card , do you know if the SATA connector from the Pavillion 15 fits as I cant find 930596-001 which is the correct part number for 14. Are these connectors (SATA -> ZIFF) quite standard across HP models ?
15 minutes getting into this to remove the harddrive, 1 screw in my IBM and 2 in my Toshiba laptops taking less than a minute to remove and replace.
Looking at where the hd is it'd have been easier to place a flap underneath it, or on the top near the trackpad.
Those ribbon connectors are fragile, I remember having to junk a perfectly good laptop once when one of the pieces of plastic on the motherboard cracked.
Years of use and heat makes those plastic connectors brittle.
And why put a 5300rpm hard drive in an i5 machine with 8gb ram, it's slower than my old IBM t42 centrino 1.5 GHz machine with a 7200 rpm hard drive, it massively hinders a windows 10 machine and makes it sluggish.
It's like putting a 2 speed auto gearbox in a Ferrari, half the power is wasted
Thanks for this clip.

is there any way i can upgrade this laptop with an ssd but keep the hdd inside?
Hello man can you please tell me,model name of Hard disk??
This is why I don't buy HP anymore. Although it's much easier than my 2013 HP Pavilion where I had to remove all the screws from the bottom then go in through the top to get to the HDD it's still harder than it needs to be. This is why I buy Acer aspire laptops now. They still have an access panel on the bottom. Only 3 screws then you have access to HDD SSD and ram and you can have an m.2 ssd and an hdd at the same time. The acers do have reliability issues sometimes though so I guess you can't really win no matter what brand you use
Thank you-
Most welcome,
Thank you, have a GOODTIME...
BTW. ; on my model the DVD drive does not pull out. But there is one tiny screw underneath the tray door. Had to break it out to access that. Luckily I only broke one catch so I managed to press it back on. Phew!!
I cant get the screws at 1:29 out :/
same issue here. have been trying for a few hours now.
Lmao same. Its ridiculous how hard they made this. 😂
Rain Revere ik, they dont want anyone to open it lol
@@ollemauleonwolter848 Exactly, I've seen bank vaults that are easier to get into (I haven't but you get my point) 😂.
Rain Revere yeah 😂
Very helpful video, I was looking for the hidden screws for some time until I came across this video and agree with others, there was a time when an access panel was apparent to get to HDD and or Ram. Obviously trying to make more difficult for the end user.
Bit of advice though, it would be best if you learned to remove the panel before videoing yourself, it doesn't look good when you are looking for hidden screws under the rubber feet, apart from that, a good and helpful video.
Thank you.
I think he's just teaching good practice. A lot of manufacturers hide the screws under the feet.
Thank you sir ...this video usefull to me thank you sooo much update this video
great tips, thank you so much
Does this labtop support eGPU ? hp pavilion 15 notebook pc
thank you for the video. i'm assuming that you need to buy a windows operating system to install on to the new harddisk correct?
You can download windows OS and install it , enter the product key which will be at bottom or under the battery of laptop OR you can clone your old HDD if its working.
Thank you.

really. I will try that. thank you for the tip
Window OS might be embedded into BIOS so you should be fine.
Thank you, that's very useful

Is there a m.2 slot ..?
I'm doing this in a couple weeks wish me luck
What ssd can i put into this
All I wanted to do is Add memory and when I was done my PC didn't boot and I had 3 screws left over🤣.
My brother pulled so hard to open it everything inside flew out.😃😄. Most laptops have a little door in the back to add memory or a little door in the back to add a hard drive this one covered everything so they know when you try to upgrade it you have to buy a new laptop
Thank you!

what hard drive is it?

Ill just wait for a new one.
is this compatible with HP 255 G8 laptop
Hi, sorry for late reply.
Hp 255 G8 is different model, disassembling process is different and it most probably comes with SSD.
