so wonderful interview. i was dancing before my birth too :) and I had 2 beautiful births and all it started with one sentence on birth classes. "You should welcome every contraction because it brings you closer to your baby". That helped me the most, just welcome every contraction and relax :)

This made me SO happy. I am pregnant, but for years before now have been fascinated by birth! in the process of unlearning "birth is horrific... so painful... etc." I feel so empowered. This aligns so much more with who I am as a person.

This is really cool to watch and learn about! My first birth was horrible. I was in a really bad marriage (the kind where you’re always on eggshells) . When I went into labor my body would NOT open. My midwife was terrible and un-empathetic. I knew nothing of about or birth and was terrified. She tried to force open my hip bones and force open my cervix with her hand in me during contractions while I was kicking and backing across the floor trying to get away cause it was so painful. (It’s not normal. The midwife was my then husband’s mother who hated me so it was not normal situation. Very messed up family) I was in labor all of a Thursdays night no sleep. They stopped on Friday but I was wide awake. It started again full force on Friday night all night and into Saturday with still no sleep or rest. She had me pushing hard long before my body was ever ready. Finally I was so exhausted and tired I asked to go to the hospital. She drove there so slow and talked on the phone like I wasn’t in serious labor pain at this point. I finally felt like pushing in the car but held back. When we did arrive at the hospital I was still in full blown labor and of course they slowly work through getting your info before allowing you in. I wanted to cuss people out so bad! I was so tired I gave in and got an epidural. The medical staff was beyond rude. FINALLY at 11:05 pm Saturday night my son was born! They tried to pull up my shirt and put the baby on my breast with all my ex’s family in the room. I had no privacy and was so uncomfortable with the whole situation I never did bond with my first son. The nurses wouldn’t leave us alone all night so that was night 3 of no sleep. When I finally got home Sunday, it was to his (my ex’s) entire family (parents and 7 siblings) in my living room uninvited and expecting to pass around my new baby and visit! I felt like having such a mental breakdown! I was too naive and a victim back then to know nothing I was in or went through was normal at all!
In the end, that marriage ended. I truly was clueless to the kind of perverted messed up family I had married into.
It’s been 8 years since January 15th I left with my son. My day of freedom as I call it. 😅
Since then I gained much more confidence, a backbone, and God blessed me with a truly amazing godly husband. We had our first daughter almost 2 years ago and the experience was so different! I still experienced some fear from the first traumatic birth of my son, but because I was safe, I was able to relax and have a wonderful unmedicated water birth! The experience was AMAZING and so was bonding with my baby! I’m now 26 weeks with our second and looking forward to it being even better with all I’ve learned! It really can be a beautiful experience even if you started with a seriously traumatic one!

I love episodes about birth and pregnancy! I'm no where near ready to bring a child into the world, but I've always wanted to be a mother and I'm so excited for the day it happens. I used to be so scared of the idea of giving birth, so much so that I convinced myself I didn't ever want kids. But after learning so much through listening to things like this, I feel like when the time comes I will be so prepared and know exactly what I need and what to do! Even though it'll likely be years until any of this actually applies to me, I think putting in the work now to rewire my brain from all the fear based narratives will have a huge impact on my future experience. Manifesting a beautiful and powerful experience for myself

Good luck with your summer baby! That’s such a good point about the expense involved (with home birth). I wish that was part of the conversation more. Giving birth where you feel safest is fantastic and obviously the ideal, but also not always possible in terms of (equitable) access to resources.
We have private cover including maternal health/maternity services but when we investigated it actually covered very little. We were going to be thousands out of pocket going that route. so decided to go public, and luckily our public hospital has a new L&D centre run primarily by midwives.

@@hazelscobbie8290 Thanks yes I know it’s not essential, but it does look interesting. Unfortunately I can’t justify $680 for interesting at the moment! I think Ellen has been quite open in the past that if she had complications she would go to a hospital without question. And so true! Everyone seems to have (often unwanted) advice. I’ve already been on the receiving end of some crazy statements from people I thought knew better

@Oceana there are a select few hospitals in Aus that offer home births with their own midwives which is still covered under Medicare. Not sure where you are but it could be an option in your area for your next baby. I'm referencing a public hospital in Newcastle NSW but I'm sure there's others

Yes! I was just talking with my husband about how I know if I learn to really relax and completely let go and enjoy sex that I know it will help me so much in labor. If you can't be calm and enjoy sex with your partner then you won't be able to in birth either! It also helps train my brain to let my husband take care of me in labor and trust him fully in all intimate moments

I think no force pushing is so interesting. When I gave birth to my son I went into it knowing that I wanted to bear down but in the moment I got impatient and forgot all about it and just listened to my midwife who was telling me to push. I did tear. So this time I’m going to talk with my midwife about it so we’re on the same page and I can have the experience I want
