During my RAF days in RAF Hospital Wegberg, Germany -1956-59, I bought a clarinet-after listening to Monty Sunshine & Chris Barber, we started a small skiffle/trad jazz group and played at station dances and such. Wonderful days, thanks to musician's like Monty & Chris. Great days. He is now playing with the angels.

@@mazda1942 Thanks for your suggestion. tbh, trad jazz is not my genre (more of a classical man!) so I had never heard of PF. However, I have had a listen to a few pieces and, yep, very good also. But, I'll stick with Monty, and these will be 'personal' reasons, as I prefer his tone and, for me, he seems to play with a little more 'ease' if that makes sense. But, I have enjoyed PF and will certainly listen to him again when I am in a 'trad mood', and wouldn't it be a weird world if we all liked the same thing!! best wishes, ns.

I was Monty's driver and soundman for the last 8 years of his playing days and on a couple of occasions, possibly if he'd had one lemonade too many, he'd start with The Old Rugged Cross and then after a couple of solo's from the band would come back to his mic and resume with Just A Closer Walk With Thee... Monty was a good boss and a lovely man, a pleasure to have known him..

Used to go to Chris Barber’s. club in Oxford Street. What a wonderful player was Monty. Those days could drive home in West London, not see many cars. Great memories, greater days. Must thank our many politicians who over the years have destroyed the culture of England, of which Chris Barber and Monty played a great part.

Saddened to read below that Monty has passed on. He often used to visit The Sakespeare Hotel at Woolwich , which was the home of The Hot Club of London. It was run by that great pioneer of British jazz, George Webb in the late fifties and sixties. Monty used to join our small group of fans in the intervals to tell us the latest dirty joke and to collect even more. A great guy and a great musician. I bet he's up there in heaven jamming away with the all time greats.

This was in 1994 (not 1990!), celebrating the 40th anniversary of Chris
Barber's professional band which was founded on May 31st 1954. The "1954
band" would play the first half followed by the current band in the
second half. Here we see and hear founding members Chris (tb), Pat
Halcox (tp), Monty Sunshine (cl) and Jim Bray (b). Lonnie Donegan (bj)
was sidelined by a cold for a day or two so Johnny McCallum stepped in.
Original drummer Ron Bowden could not do the whole tour, so here it's
COLIN Bowden who covered parts of it. This was filmed in Rastatt,
    Germany.

Monty was playing in the Wardroom (Officer's Mess) at HMS Condor, Arbroath in July,1970. The chairman of the JRs' club asked the band to play in the club on the Saturday as the camp was being closed. The band performed Saturday and Sunday - for free I think - what a fantastic couple of days those were. Seem to think that quite a lot of booze got drunk that weekend.
