"Sweet Thing" is a song written by David Bowie for the album Diamond Dogs in 1974. The song is split in two with "Candidate" in the middle.
A track now referred to as "Zion" has also appeared on bootlegs under the titles "Aladdin Vein", "Love Aladdin Vein", "A Lad in Vein",and "A Lad in Vain".Incorporating parts reminiscent of "Aladdin Sane" and what would become "Sweet Thing (Reprise)" on Diamond Dogs, this instrumental piece was generally thought to have been recorded during the Aladdin Sane sessions at Trident Studios early in 1973. However a recent estimate places it alongside recordings for Pin Ups later that year, as a preview of Bowie's next original work, leading author Nicholas Pegg to suggest that it "perhaps ought to be regarded more as a Diamond Dogs demo than an Aladdin Sane out-take".A 1973 article about Bowie recording PinUps in France accurately describes the song, which seems to confirm Pegg's theory:
David asks engineer Andy to run up a quick mix of the next project. Now this is really the one - the next album of Bowie's own original material. "There are no vocals on it yet - just my la-la-la-ing. Its going to be a musical in one act called 'Tragic Moments' probably running straight through two sides. We listen to perhaps seven minutes of music. I am confused. The contrast between 'Tragic Moments' and PINUPs could not be greater. The former is a highly arranged, subtly shifting music with just a touch of vaudeville: Mike Garson's piano flashes through like quicksilver. Perhaps the closest approximation to what has gone before would be the title track of Aladdin Sane. - Hudba

Exactly my feeling.
In 50 years no-one, even Bowie himself, has ever matched this. Timeless perfection - like so much of this man's work this is where theatre and music collide and when he did it, lt was always greater than both. There are few truly unique and valuable talents but David achieved that and stayed there to the end. So much to be thankful for but God what have we missed with him dying so very young. The man was a shape-shifting Titan and I miss him so much
Its his 'ultimate' work, hjs masterpiece,so to speak. And ive thought so for over a decade now, since getting into him and being blown away hearing this album and this song particularly, it represents all his intrests upto that point as you articulated.

When I hear blackstar for the first time, I immediately know it's his self tribute for this.
At the beginning of this song, he actually covers three full octaves in his singing ... He was a brilliant singer!
His guitar and sax work are also incredible on this album. I think his musicianship gets overlooked often.

This song although re written to touch upon Bowie's bisexuality (to dodge a lawsuit from the Orwell's widow) was originally supposed to be about Julia and Winston's secret love in 1984. I love how almost every lyric is related to the book.

Does that make you smile, isn't that me?"= Refers to their big age gap and in this line gives us Julia's perspective of Winston as he was the only man over 30 who shared her political views.

The claws of love have worked their way under the skins of both characters and they must now face the consequences Big Brother has instituted for their type of love.

Brilliant composition. Don't understand comment by Marsbella1 that Bowie couldn't sing... based on observation that he always sounded like Bowie. Bonkers.
His sense of melody and use of instrumentation was exceptional.
He is never given enough credit for his many balladic tours de force where his voice found unique range and tone that sent shivers down the spine. Nobody that I've listened to down the years comes close. Add to that stunning existential lyrics.
Cygnet Committee, Bewlay Brothers, Five Years, Rock n Roll Suicide, Aladdin Sane, Lady Grinning Soul, Big Brother, Sweet Thing.., Station to Station. Just some absolutely unique creations in my hopeless opinion. Genius. And incredibly underrated as a vocalist.

Sweet Thing isn’t ‘underrated’ - it’s one of his most lauded pieces of work, as is the album.

Diamond Dogs is such an underrated album, IMO! I have so many "favorite" Bowie albums- "Low" nearly brings me to tears with each listen and "Station To Station" is inseparable from certain periods of my life- yet "Diamond Dogs" still remains the closest to my heart, flaws and all. It always transports me somewhere else with every listen- I wish everyone could appreciate it the way I do!

I’m reading Orwell’s 1984 at the moment and I can’t get away from the idea that this album is the musical of that novel which I know has been documented before, but this song for me is written from the perspective of Julia yearning for contact with a man against her indoctrination as a party member. This and ‘we are the dead’ being Winston Smith’s narrative just before they’re arrested by the thought police. Those and ‘1984’ and ‘big brother ‘are the base of an amazing musical of 1984 that someone should make, such a shame the great man isn’t here to perform it, God how I’d love to see him play this album live.
Diamond Dogs was based on 1984 - but David Bowie had to diversify it a bit, as Mrs Orwell wouldn't give him the rights.

I was 13 when this came out and to me Bowie is a genius .
I'm 48 and a Bowie fan since I was 9 or 10. As a librarian I love cataloging everything, so not surprisingly, I maintain detailed lists and inventories of many things ... including Bowie's albums and songs. While I love many Bowie songs and hold many in very high regard, Sweet Thing is #1 for me. I've loved it since I first heard it in 1975 and I still hear and visualize it the same way I did as a 10 year old boy ... and that, my firends, is a sweet thing!

My brother and I both loved this album. Bowie on vocals, piano, sax, guitar, melotron.....he was so creative. There is a massive hole in the Rock N Roll world after his passing. Love this whole album.

I think Bowie still wanted to be a jazz musician and this was his attempt to bring fusion to the next level. His ear, even 40 years ago, was too sophisticated for his audience. That sax opener in Candidate reminds me of Zoot Sims or at least West Coast Cool jazz. It's why I dig Blackstar--some electro-ballad stuff mixed in with jazz.
He made Diamond Dogs, nobody understood it, so he moved on. Whereas for me, the 1st half of the album is probably my favorite Bowie work. Just a year or two ago, Pitchfork had some crap review and gave the album a middling score. Then they put up a new review last week and it's so sycophantic, but there's no specific reference to music--only name checking. They didn't understand the album before when they rejected it and they still don't understand it now that they've lionized it. Maybe they should try listening to some Mingus. Then they might have something intelligent to say about Bowie.

Helen Levasseur I know what an icon, of course he was a man but as a performer, musician, songwriter, it feels great to just experience the larger than life characters that Bowie presented to fans of music, especially with eccentricity blending with all the different styles of music if he was influenced by, they'll definitely be making movies about Bowie in the future

Aaron Lee: Hi. I'm not trying to be contrary, but when you say 'nobody understood it' what do you mean? It hit number one in the UK and number 5 in the US (his highest album position at the time) and going by wikipedia seemed to get positive reviews - certainly it doesn't mention that it was badly reviewed. I just wondered where you got the idea that no one understood it, whatever that means. I say 'whatever that means' as a) I love this album but am not sure that I 'understand it' (partly coz i'm not sure what that means) and b) it really gets on my nerves when I don't like an album and people suggest that I don't understand it. I'm not really sure what that means. I absolutely adore Beethoven and Mozart, for example, but I'm pretty sure I don't understand a great deal of what's going on musically, culturally etc.

Only my piddly opinion, but Bowie surely soared to his most phenomenal heights with Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane. Ever since I was a kid this guy has taken me to another world.
This song was inspired by the book "City of Night" by John Rechhy, and boy does it evoke it well in this sing. Hustlers, junkies, the underbelly...the loneliness, the cold, the dirt, the friendship, the heart. Amazing song, amazing book. One of Bowie's very best. Miss you Starman.

So dark, mysterious I visualise I'm living in some post nuclear apolyotic society. No future just doom and gloom. David Bowie could paint many different contrasts through his music. Only he could do that. Rock n roll art. R. I. P. David.
His quitar work is distinctive and sharp, even agressive. Sometimes like saxofone.I love it!
Don’t think I ever got over hearing this haunting masterpiece of David’s for the first time ....I’m 62 now and it’s still with me ....musical nirvana.
It's hard to believe that David thought he wasn't a very good singer because every time I hear his voice i always get chills...his voice is sexy with a crazy range that most musicians today could never match
Well if you ask most people if they think his voice is great, they would probably say no, but to me, his personality and expression in his voice is unrivalled. Not necessarily his tone or pitch although he's not bad in those categories.
He is a good singer though, most people who say that he isn't are either hyper-focussing on his early years when his technique was wonky (but his pitch was still decent enough) or don't understand what he's doing, or just have very rigid ideas of what's good singing. By the end of the 70's he had fantastic control (not to be confused by his tendency to deliberately push his voice off key for effect like on Joe the Lion), a really clean transition, absolutely beautiful timbre, and good support. He also had quite the range even by 1974, he had only just started to use better technique here and scales 3 octaves in the first minute then hits an even higher head voice note at the end. He's not Freddie Mercury but he's probably still in the upper tiers for rock vocalists, he just has a pretty unique style with a tendency to 'break the rules' which I think throws some people off. But those chills... that's really all you need to know that he's good.
This one awed me in 1974, and I find it still has that power. He hits his lowest lows (It's safe in the city...), his highest highs (will you see...), and the range and vision he packs between them is just mind-scrambling. Sure do miss you, bud...

I wish I could elaborate why this song affects me as much as it does but the Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (reprise) suite always floors me even after years of repeated listens. It's just a perfectly composed piece- simple, beautiful, yet at the same time intensely emotional and heart-wrenching without relying on trite (or even literal) lyrical devices. In a way it thrives in how "simple" of a song it is, no matter how much I love his more experimental work. Truly a masterful musician.
this album takes me back to when me and my best friends were 17 such a great time.
By listening this song I can feel inside my chest, my heart rate is changing slow to fast then goes back to slow.

This sequence of tracks is so thick with accomplished genius, it is almost a painful joy to listen to. If I start being specific, I'll run out of room before I even get going.
I can see why David had to dial it down a bit after this.

I remember the day he died. I felt so sad and broken. It felt like losing my childhood best friend . I started listening to Bowie around the age of 10. I did have an elder brother who gave me a copy casette with Ziggy and Hunky Dory. I felt asleep listening to hes songs for so many nights. I still love his music.
Artists of this calibre are exceedingly rare. Greatly missed.

At the time of their release 'DIAMOND DOGS' and 'HOUSES OF THE HOLY' were the two most under-appreciated albums from 1973-1974 and are today recognized as the GREATNESS they are.

Diamond Dogs is one of the best albums I've ever heard.
Not many artists can combine soul and rock with such conviction as Bowie. Sweet Thing is such a great song from Bowie.

Can we just take a moment to reflect that this polytonal, convoluted, operatic, psycho dramatic,epic was regarded as mainstream popular music bought by TEENAGERS in the seventies, WHERE the hell has artistic creativity gone?
Goodness, Bowie lucked out, didn't he? Ferociously intelligent, beautiful, talented, and hard-working. He may have only had 69 years, but he LIVED practically every moment of them, and left us his wonderful art to cherish and enjoy.

Jumping around all the albums - 'Dogs, Ziggy, Station to Station, Hunky D, incredible Aladdin Sane, Scary Monsters, and all the rest, nothing quite beats 'Sweet Thing'. Must have listened to it 100s of times, maybe 1000s, and never get tired of it. For me it's the ultimate Bowie song...epic...visits every musical genre, and moves me every time I hear it, after 30 plus years. What more can we want from music?!

Oh how we miss David. It really was a sweet thing. My son has been living out in Adelaide for the past five years. I get across as often as is possible and always armed with classic albums for his turntable. February this year was Who’s Next and Diamond Dogs. He was well impressed. Whilst over there visited Rerun records in the mall on Rundle. Picked up Machine Head and Volume 4. Two more classics in my humble opinion but then I have been a musician all of my life. Love you son.

Jane, yes no one will ever come close. I still see vividly in my mind when I saw him live in 1978 when I was just 16. compelling and so very memorable. Every day I miss him and think how lucky I am to have had him in my life for such a long time, playing his music every day and hearing something different in it each time. What a treasure he was.
Before my time but this the first album I ever got back when I was a kid, birthday present from my parents. Always loved it, and Bowie.

You hit this perfectly. This is the type of song that really lends itself to headphones. There is so much going on in this song and to think that bowie was playing piano, sax, guitar and singing.
