Wow Ewan fantastic job splitting that wood! I don’t think you can comprehend how much joy and inspiration you are bringing to this channel. You now have friends and family around the world behind you on your journey of life. You put a tear in this old man’s eyes today for sure. Much love my friend. 🙏♥️♥️
I was really having a bad morning here in NJ. This video got me to a better place.. This channel is about so much more than cutting and chopping. It's an absolute revelation. Greatly appreciated..
"People always ask me why your always getting firewood" BUCKIN If I had a dollar for every time I heard that id be a rich man... I heat with wood, fellow tree man, run a tree service, and STILL always looking for firewood! The joy of firewood warms the soul and the people you meet on this journey are the nicest people. I can say firewood helped me in my life not only just heat a home but warm the soul.
This may sound crazy, but I wonder if a power washer would knock off that dirt and rocks. A portable system for out in the bush would be needed obviously. An extra step, but beats killing your chains. I’ve had tree service wood that I’ve swept and scraped and even still saw my chain sparking at times. I’ve grown so much from your channel, thanks Buckin!
That sounds crazy... but I'm sure there are many crazy ways that the Buckin Army has come to deal with such problems. Buckin say's it right, " let me bring the logs to the landing to avoid the dirt and rocks getting into the bark" (not a direct quote) but we get it 🌲✅
You are scaring me to death with that one hand holding of the chainsaw when there is a log on the other side. Anyway, definitely agree: dirt is the enemy of saws. I am trying to get into milling so I don't have to deal anymore with bucking a 100 foot log 100 times for firewood. Considering the cost for lumber, you can just mill the wood and buy the firewood.
Billy Ray, at 3 weeks shy of 60, I know that I am a few years your senior. BUT, if not for my low back pains, I would be so full of vim and vigor like you are. Much of my "ahhhhh" type peace has been replaced by an altered lifestyle of looking after the health and well being of my mom who passed away Oct 2022, and my dad who is living out the remainder of his life needing the care of family, friends and professional facilities. Learning from you, has given me some measure of the " AHHHHHHH of peace" at knowing that tree work, wrenching on trucks, saws, tractors can all return to me the rewards of simple active mind and body. Thank you, Brother.
this boy is great! oh dirt, I have other problems now - frost!)) the damp wood is frozen and all the moisture in it has become ice, and the bark is like an iceberg))) to save the chain I make holes with an ax for cutting and clean the icy bark, otherwise the chain sparks and smokes . winter is very romantic with axes in a snowy forest!x))))
Hey buckin, I do firewood for a living and we skid everything out with a cable skidder so I know what you’re talking about. I file many times a day so that’s why I run a shorter 24” inch bar on my saws. Cutting dirty wood all day is not fun. Especially when it’s frozen. Keep on doing what you do!
@@jirusjirus9322 Yes no fun at all. Gets better when we get a good snow base All the wood stays clean. Freezing rain is no fun either. Ice dulls the chain pretty quick. Gotta just look at my wallet and keep on cutting!!
Ewan young man, I am 67 years old and think I am pretty fit but seeing you using that axe is a real inspiration to me. Thank you young man and ‘keep on keeping on’. Kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland. Joe.
O heck yeah, Billy, on dirty logs. I cut a bunch of firewood in state lands that they deck by the landings. It's mostly junk but of course there's a lot of good wood in there. But it is dirty dirty dirty. You need a $20 permit to cut , and it's broken up into areas. I like to get some easy stuff then wait for a windstorm (we have them often at the coast), then you can cut any downed wood in the cut area. SO much better than the dirty gravel wood. I bring two saws and a top handle, and a chain or two extra for each.
Great tips Buckin. You help a lot of people with your tips including me. Thank you your a great person helping so many people that had no idea of what could happen, your right on so many levels such great words of wisdom. Thank you ❤❤
Dealing with some really dirty wood myself..will wait until I can see it all and do the same thing clean the bark off..looked like the operators rolled the logs in the dirt ..got one second growth three footer that i really hope can clean up enough to put on a truck instead of firewood ..see if it has too many knots ..have to get the buyer up to look..full house 32 ,yikes …myself skiptooth but we all have our preferences …firewood chain , run them to the line …thanks for the tips ..always learning ..never too old to learn ..thanks Buckin.
Wwll said buckin. I know my saws have eaten dirt and steel hidden in the wood. My tree service friend does what he can to keep the wood clean, but it's always the hidden nails or spike that gets me. Since you have taught us how to hand files, i have learned a lot and can be back up and cutting in a few minutes..
Hip hip hooray buckin the legend. Huge respect for Iwan too there's no better feeling than splitting wood 🪵. Small stones and dirt is a pain as I remove trees blockages from rivers as part of my job and end up sharpening the chain a few times
Kids gotta mean swing for sitting down, little dood is killin it. A while ago, I built myself a “carpenter’s” style tool box for my chainsaw stuff. It holds a couple bars, files, stump vice, chains, tools and parts that regularly fail. I can grab it and my saws and go. I have it compartmented so I can tell when something is missing or needs restocking. To me, there is nothing worse than setting the day aside to go do some cutting and a small thing stops the whole production, especially if you have been doing this long endurance to know better to have on hand. When I go harvest wood, I will drag the trees with my truck and a tow strap to an open spot where I can buck it and load it. So it’s always dirty. However, I live in New England so the majority of trees we have here do not have that super deep texture bark your firs have. So I think what dirt it holds is comparatively far less. The point is learning to file your chain, in a way that works for you. This past weekend I started teaching my son about saws, had him fill it up and file it. I was teaching him to do a maintenance file with every tank fill. Just to get his hands on it and be near it, next will be running it.
Good stuff, wishing you the best teaching your son and keeping his interests on the positive side. Can't imagine the distractions that are ever present these days for young men. 🌲
Hi buckin. I just wanted to say thank you for keeping it real i ❤ it. I was in a crap mood before watching this video and what a difference it made I'm unfortunately surrounded by a negative family. So i look forward to seeing your video's and thank you again much ❤from California
Ewan glad to see you with that axe. Buckin, I prefer the longer videos, then again I’m in my 50’s, I’m not in to the short videos, I enjoy listening, learning, and just hanging out here. Good day to y’all.
"....bring two of everything.." Amen to that. Boy did I feel that when you "ripped" your shoulder. I haven't owned a lot of chainsaws (landowner not logger), but I have learned every 'saw has it's own sweet spot when it comes to starting and pull chords. I dunno how many times I've nobbled an elbow or shoulder firing up machines. I always imagined that left me in the Beginner league, so while I am sorry for your shoulder, I am heartened to know such a simple thing as just starting the thing on a hostile day is a mercy for stars and wannabe's alike!
Bring two of everything ✅ Used to roadie for bands, played in bands and worked on giant rock concerts and there's always something breaking or failing at the last minute. Wow, Ewan, you sure know how to swing an axe 🪓😃 Very nice on the downswing 👌🏻 And that axe isn't too shabby either, hehe 😁 Thank you for sharing that with us! Would be real nice to see you again Love from Germany 🙂🌳🌲❤️
Thanks... I am finally able to file my own saws. I have owned a 60” circle sawmill 30 years. Filing mill teeth is an easy straight across file, not so much with chainsaws ! Gary in Michigan (Woody’s Sawmill).
I can relate ... landscaping ... i throw a spade shovel like you do an axe ... also axe thru roots 3 to 6 inches thick taking out bushes n trees by hand as well as digging holes for large root balls planting ... removing overgrown juniper
Some of the hardest work I've done is tree and roots removal by hand... sheesh... I'm still working on a root ball from a blow down that is huge, on a hill above a water cistern. Shaky to say the least. 🌲💚
This is inspiration for our kids to get out and find yourselves and start hitting the wood. Well done keep hitting the wood, it builds character, makes you tenacious and prepares one for the challenges of this life to come.

1. Much prayer for young man Ewan. 2. Man, I felt that in MY shoulder! Way to get back after it between the starter rope and the quick sharpening. 3. I love that you get every last mile out of that chain. Good stuff, Buckin'!
Buckin. Great to see and hear you again. Ewan sure has a good swing for a young fella. Sitting like that he sure is going to gain some nice upper body strength. My words for any project that I do, is, make a plan and then work your plan. Keep the videos coming buckin. Love everyone.
"Make a plan, then work your plan" Short and sweet, i like it. It's a mini mantra with higher percentage of total completion of the task at hand. Learning from the comments maybe second hand learning but if it's inspired by Buckin then BAM ⚡ I'll take it ✅
Ewan’s got guts and the will to can through with what he likes doing. Got to admire the mindset of the young guy. As to spares - I always carry a spare length of pull cord, a spark plug, a brakeband and another chain. It’s a mind killer, to have walked a 1/2 mile to the first tree and have something simple break. Not much more weight but a whole lots easier, than another walk. Dirt and stones in the bark - if you can debark then yes, go ahead and do it. If you can’t, then 10mins. of removing a bit of soil, stone and metal where you’re going to cut. Will save 30mins+ of sharpening after the first two cuts.
Hi guys. A pleasure watching tools put to good use, rather than precious show pieces. Ewan, youre inspiring. Amazing here in Australia, being inspired by an English lad, via a Canadian influenza.
Hello Buckin', Thanks for showcasing thje trials and tribulations of dirty wood and almost worn out chains, Most of all the young fellow splitting wood with an ax!! I applauded him when he got it to actually split, he has more stick-to-it-ness than me, and a better aim to hit the same spot several times if needed. FanTasTic Vid.
I didn't watch this video before writing this but one thing I can say. Some PARENTS now a days are lazy which equals kids / our future generations and work force that are just as lazy. Instead of handing them a cellphone or video game hand them a work ethic. This 12 year old puts most 17 to 25 year old guys to shame in so many ways. Work like your putting your name on it for the world to see
Power saws have added much to the joy of cutting wood. I think it’s because the power saw makes cutting much easier and quicker. Imagine what it was like cutting wood before the power saw.
Godspeed, Ewan, you're a wonderful young man! Good thing you count every stroke on every tooth and make they all are exactly the same😅 499k on 1/2/24 keep'em coming BBRS! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Iv watched a LOT of chainsawing CZcams videos but when it comes to getting the BEST formula I gotta give it you brother specially the back saving information because if iv learned one thing it’s you gotta save your back, don’t let any negative comments get you worked up, their not worth it. From SkullBone Tennessee keep it going man your a good dude

Dirt and stones in the bark - if you can debark then yes, go ahead and do it. If you can’t, then 10mins. of removing a bit of soil, stone and metal where you’re going to cut. Will save 30mins+ of sharpening after the first two cuts.
Great job. All the best to this young man from Buffalo NY
Hi guys. A pleasure watching tools put to good use, rather than precious show pieces. Ewan, youre inspiring. Amazing here in Australia, being inspired by an English lad, via a Canadian influenza.
Love from the heart. From true Blue that already knew. Be well Billy
Happy holidays
Hello Buckin', Thanks for showcasing thje trials and tribulations of dirty wood and almost worn out chains, Most of all the young fellow splitting wood with an ax!! I applauded him when he got it to actually split, he has more stick-to-it-ness than me, and a better aim to hit the same spot several times if needed. FanTasTic Vid.
Way To Go Ewan ! Great Job Young Fella ! Hay Vartan ! Glad The Shoulder Is OK ! Prayers For All Here ! ATB T God Bless
Hey Buckin big fan brother. Big fan of this young man what a little man you have all my respect little brother keep swinging .
Work like your putting your name on it for the world to see
Impressive, Buckin'Billy. I expected a little dance though 👍
Heck ya!!
Over 100 cords every year we hand cut !
Power saws have added much to the joy of cutting wood. I think it’s because the power saw makes cutting much easier and quicker.
Imagine what it was like cutting wood before the power saw.
I always think that when I'm using my excavator. Power anything is so enjoyable!
Ewan- big work young man! You got laser beam accuracy and killer technique! Keep at it…
That little wood chopper is 100x sharper than his new axe and his family is amazing!
