The episode Booze Cruise basically summarizes Michael as a boss perfectly. He spends most of the episode trying to give some grandiose, inspirational speech or presentation, only to come across as an idiot. But then, in a quiet moment outside, when he’s not trying to impress anyone, he inspires Jim (“Never, ever, ever give up.”). Michael Scott in a nutshell. He's a great boss when he's not trying to be a great boss.

he was just very charismatic and able to connect with people on a personal level.

The reason Michael is alone for so long is because he puts other people over himself. It's obvious he grew up with little love and he doesn't want other people to feel that so he tries to care and love people as much as possible while sacrificing his own love life.

He's what everybody secretly wants to be: he never hides who he is or compromises his personal ideals. He is heavily flawed but he is easily the most caring individual on the show to everyone except Toby.

Damn dude, making me emotional over here. I started out absolutely hating Michael as a character, Steve always did a great job but in the beginning his character was just so unpleasant, I loved how the show continued to expand his character into something a lot more likable.
Yeah, I usually skip the first season when I rewatch the show; Michael is just way to obnoxious there and it seemed they hadn't really figured out where they were gonna take his character yet.
Film Radar He's obnoxious because he wants to fit in with everyone, he wants to be the funny guy that gets invited to parties and stuff. Everyone knows one person that tries really hard to be funny, but no one really laughs.
He's obnoxious, because that's how the character in the original Ricky Gervais show is.

I forget exactly which episode it's in, but when Michael is shown throwing full slices of bread on the ground for birds to eat, it perfectly encapsulates his most common problem: knowing what he's probably supposed to do, just not having any idea to what degree he should be doing it.

I started noticing this the more and more I watched it. I’ve seen the whole show over 10 times, and I realized it to a point that it frustrates me that no other characters realize it. They treat Michael like he shouldn’t even be the manager, when he’s clearly the best they’ve ever had, and continuously proves it. He just does things different from everyone else, and rather than seeing the good that comes from it, they talk down about it and act like it’s bad that he doesn’t do things their way. Every time I see that episode where they go to Chili’s with the client, I can’t help but smile when Jan does. It’s not because she’s happy he made the sale. It partly is, but mainly because she saw what he did, and realized and appreciated his strategy. Also, they have an argument over the restaurant choice earlier in the episode, and I think that’s why Michael chose Chili’s. It’s a more laid back, non business environment. A place where the client would feel better and more comfortable, making it easier for them to loosen up and make that personal connection. So he was thinking not only about the person, but the environment.
MCwhite Studios my favorite part is when Michael Scott makes his own business and brings clients from Dunder Mifflin, and they mention that he brought over half half the clients to dunder mifflin in the past. He was beating them in competition he just didn't have the resources, which shows just how valuable a salesman he was. He was distracting and lazy but he kept morale up, much more than other companies did despite the work just being utterly boring. There is only so much he can do. He isn't smart but he connects with people. He knows how to get his foot in the door by being honest and knowing what people want to hear. He even showed that with his employees when Jim and him struggled to give raises to some of the employees as co-managers, debating whether they should do it by department or by how well they were doing. He knew there was no easy way to approach the situation and though Jim was right that he needed to be more tough on the decision making, he still was the only one that knew that whatever they said would be met with drawback. They didn't even like the idea of ranking them or giving the raise to the sales department which seemed the most reasonable approach, which Jim didn't know how to wrap his mind around the situation.

I think it's pretty warranted tbh. He's just better as a salesperson than he is as a manager, because he isn't able to showcase his best, which is probably why he's always procrastinating and distracting others. He's not the type of guy to sit down and file paperwork, he's the type of guy to go out and connect with people.

Jesus christ i love this man when he finally gets real. He seems like he's hurt deep down but feels like he is in a position that he has to motivate and cheer others because they depend on him. Like he himself puts it in words: The people he works with are his family. It's like he's stuck on a character. He's not dumb, he's not sociopath. He is just the somebody we need to make it through our daily lives. He is somebody he himself needed when he was working in the sales. When he got replaced before the michael scott paper company he dropped the act for a while. But seeing pam come along even though there is no logical reason to do it, after pam breaks down trying to deal with his real self he finally realizes who he is and who he needs to be and puts the mask back on. Brings tears to my eyes really.

I don’t think it’s really a mask, I think he genuinely just enjoys doing what he does. Yes he’s hurt, and he wanted kids real bad (which he got) but I don’t think he puts a “mask” on, he really just is the best version of Michael Scott
Those moments when Jim is either being the co-manager or doing some management-related task and he realizes that there is this logic and reasoning behind the things Michael does are some of my favorites of the series. Michael may very well be an idiot in a lot of things, be he is far from being a terrible manager.
Michael reminds of me how I felt as a kid. Someone who constantly wants others to feel happy and entertained is someonw who wasn't properly socialized and worst of all probably didn't feel much joy growing up. What little Michael reveals about his childhood is hilarious but heartbreaking. He's the kid who never grew up but in the same way he's the only person who clearly understands and appreciates PEOPLE more than anyone. His moments of unintentional advice or just being human with Jim, Pam and Dwight over the series are beautiful.

Nearly word for word my wife's assessment, years ago, of Carrell's portrayal of the character on the American version of the sitcom. Everytime she watched it she would point out moments of Michael's true talent as the salesman that loved his people and truly cared about his clients. Also how many people get promoted away from their true calling by soulless and mindless remote corporations. Very well presented.

Great video. I love how the Office contrasts people like Ryan who should be the best salesperson (on paper) with his MBA, but has never made a sale, with the actual top sales people like Mike, Jim, and Dwight who are good salespeople because they do it differently than they are supposed to. I especially love the scene where Jim and Dwight go on a sales appointment and at the beginning Dwight calls a big company who puts him on hold, while Jim calls Dunder Mifflin and Kelly picks up immediately.

This is why it irks the hell out of me when they say there's no such thing as emotional intelligence, or that it doesn't matter if you want to be successful in life. Success is not money, it's acomplishment. If what you do professionally makes you happy then you *are* professionally successful. Michael Scott is an example of a person with several obvious shortcomings but with a true sense of humanity and empathy. I noticed he always made a light hearted joke (that innevitably fell flat and made other people mock him) whenever something made him uncomfortable and went against his principles. He tried to steer things back to the right path with humor, even if it usually failed when it came to making his point - probably because in our society cinicism is valued instead of being reviled. Michael doesn't know how to be a cinic. Even when he's being awkward and humiliating himself he always does it with the best intentions and hoping it will make other people happy. We could use more of that in the world.
This is why The Office is my favorite and one of the best sitcom shows in history
I come back to this video every few months. It is a genuine masterpiece, and I believe I've only just begun to truly understand it. The connection to people and it's importance over just selling a need and our constant loss of this personal connection that Michael sells, even more so after Covid-19. Michael Scott is a goon, but with so many small beautiful moments of wisdom throughout the series, and this is the greatest summary of his wisdom that I know. I believe I will always come back to this video to reminisce as long as I remember the Office.

That's true for a lot of sitcoms though if you describe their basic premises without a hint of comedy.
Community is about very flawed people who experienced medium to large setbacks in life trying to better themselves in a subpar community college full of societies outcasts. Parks & Rec is about the struggle to make your community a better place against all odds.
How I Met Your Mother is about a hopelessly romantic guy desperately trying but continuously failing to find love in a big city.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is about five codependent alcoholics constantly failing at life, with no one to hold onto except each other as they push everyone away because they're insufferable, which likely results out of mental issues, substance abuse and trauma and dealing with all of that in the worst possible way. (Seriously though, It's Always Sunny would be the most tragic and depressing show on TV if they didn't play it for laughs)
This made me cry. Because; I m from Sri Lanka and in this third world money and sales flows with slightly harshly. I recently got to know about this Sit-Com The Office US through CZcams and will give my utmost gratitude for uploading videos of the show and the review videos like this. Michael Scott is literally my father but he stuck in the wrong job for 34 years. He will be retiring in next April/March. He was in the logistic/invester side and he does not possessed any degrees but a human degree of wanting to help other and the country. But all of the people who worked with him much "Higher Qualification" but doesn't care about a single client. Through out my life I saw my father's life was in misery. His only happiness was having my mother by his side and looking me growing up. Just like Michael He cared about the people that numbers. When a foreign investor/ local investor comes to his table with a business idea or a problem, he always try to do his best and his hope was that person should not have the same problem again while OTHERS . Which ultimately has to go over "Company" ethics and consider the humane part of the business. He did well but never recognized.

Wall Street focuses a lot more on stocks and greed, but there are elements of that there. The old veteran stockbroker being laid off as Bud Fox following Gekko's mantra of "Greed is Good" gets a promotion, a secretary, and his own office.
This is why Michael is, by far, the best character on the show. And why you can’t help but like him and sympathize with him, even when he’s acting in a way he shouldn’t.
Michael's genuine moments are my favorite parts of the show. Nothing beats seasons 2 and 3 for overall quality, but my favorite arc was the Michael Scott Paper Company from season 5. I loved the relationship he formed with Pam.

Unfortunately, in todays world, in the eyes of corporate and management, results matter. You can maintain as many clients as possible, but retainment doesn’t create growth, aggressive tactics and hard work does. In todays world, people don’t care about people anymore - we care about how good we look, how cool our phones are, what’s on those phones, who we’ll screw next - everything else is arbitrary. Aggressive salesmen get rich because people no longer care about the salesmen or the integrity associated with him... rather, they care about the end result. Retainment creates marginalized stability, but aggression creates less stability but a higher possibility for client saturation, which in turn can offset any stability that is lost from not giving a fuck.
Michael’s sales tactics worked when our grandparents were young. In todays world, the garbage that’s sold sells itself. We can all claim we’d buy from the nicer guy, but the truth is that if we really want something and it’s cheap enough, we’ll get it at the douchebag’s business instead of with the guy with the nice warm smile at 1/3rd higher the price and 1/2 the product.
Steve Neill I agree that when it comes to business/sales in today’s world, Michael’s approach is often torn apart by a ruthless ‘numbers game’ approach, particularly in saturated industries.
However, I think that developing relationships/friendships in this way, leads to long-term ‘life success,’ which is what people really want at their core. To feel cared for and valued.
In essence, apply these values/principles/ideas to life/relationships and you can create deep bonds with those in your life...and find a greater sense of fulfillment.
At the end of the day, it isn’t how much money we make that matters, it’s how connected & useful we feel to those in our life.
This is the ‘old school’ lesson that will stand the test of time and prove to be extremely valuable, particularly in these times where our culture/society has become more & more disconnected.

I think it depends on the individual you're selling to. I'm a big believer in Michael's approach. In life too. I have reps in a niche market and relationship building is our key to success. We make money on repeat business. Taking care of our customers is the only way our business would work. There are industries where sales requires the numbers game. I remember selling to Dell back in 2000 after the dot com bust and they wanted all value adds removed from quotes. Only product and pricing. They were bleeding, as were many companies. My goto in sales is that "sales is intel". Without intel sales becomes a struggle. The Internet provides us with a lot if intel on our prospects.

When watching the office with my family we used to always have conversations about why Michael Scott was still doing well. I couldn't help but grin when I heard you point out a few of his qualities that we also ended up discussing, while also shedding far more light on what his personal business approach actually meant.

Abdul Wali To be honest, I started to find the first 6-7 episodes of season 4 a bit dull. Around the same time, work came in the way and I had much less time to watch TV. So I just kind of drifted away from The Office.

This was a very heartwarming take on the overarching themes of The Office and the characteristics that make Michael so likeable despite his many blunders and faux pas'. It's easy to miss the forest for the trees, so thank you for the retrospective.
I've never watched this show, but having been self-employed for over a decade, I have learned that you cannot do business without a certain amount of trust. To a degree, you can't separate your work from yourself - there is always a human component. Loved the vid!

It's not just TV fluff. I worked as a canvasser for World Vision for a little while. I sucked at it, but the most successful person in our company was the one guy who spent the most time chatting and getting to know potential sponsors. Our trainers said that if we could knock on 100 doors in a day we'd get a sale, but this guy only hit about 35 homes. He ended up being the most consistent employee not just in the branch or the city, but in all of Canada by building a relationship with potential donors.

Wow. You actually made me cry. Wonderful. I love the nuance you brilliantly revealed in michaels character. Hes not just a dunderhead, blundering fool but a genuine, ultimately decent person who cares about people. You really brought that out in an amazing way that we can all learn from.

Don't take this the wrong way. But this is actually how sales is usually done with big businesses. People build relationships, you can't just force a sell when you are selling products worth millions or even billions. So what Michael is doing isn't necessarily unique, but it might be unique for the market he's working in (selling paper).
The main reason why Michael cares so much about these relationships isn't because he's a great sales man, but because Michael likes to be liked/loved by others while the others often don't show him the love he wants.
And this is why I hate cynics. Oof, hate to see what you’d say about LSOO’s other essays. e_e
@@atmassylphen6785 but it’s not cynical though. This is how big businesses do their sales. I should know, I work for one. We’re discouraged to be robots who just zero in on securing a sale but rather we are encouraged to build a relationship with our clients.
This is sooo true. That part about faceless transaction and having small time to talk to customers really hits me home. I used to work in the corporate industry and when this world dehumanize human's capacity to relate and touch lives, it suffocated me. Like Michael, I really felt the same way as him. I realized that I am no shark as well and that's why I pursued a course which can help me focus on the human aspect of my being rather than crunching numbers and beating corporate competitors. I love Michael Scott 😘

I have watched The Office for 10 times, at least, and although I can feel all these traits of Michael and his amazing evolution as I watch the show, this video is just a wonderful overview of this aspect of Michael and it totally made me emotional here. Thank you very much for the content, man.

He started to hate toby because he was divorced..in some episode came up his parents were divorced..so he relate to to it..but eventually he himself give divorce to jan and become more mature to understand it..

I still liked Toby initially though. Despite how badly Michael treated him he kept taking his job seriously as HR and in that episode where he was supposed to give Michael some psych evaluation or something he was trying his best to help him overcome his issues (and they even bonded a bit before Michael realized what was happening lol).
I didn't like Toby after Michael left, he changed too much and his character didn't make sense to me anymore. Their dynamic is what made Toby's existence funny, perhaps lol. When Michael left everyone was nice to him. They tried to bring back the boss-hates-toby dynamic with Andy but it just didn't work for me. But he also grew incredibly creepy. That thing with Nelly was very disgusting of him. I couldn't see previous Toby doing something like that so aggressively. Although he did have that knee moment with Pam, but he didn't pursue it afterwards or kiss her or smell her hair and give her a massage or anything like the things he did with/to Nelly.

ENFP was my guess for Michael after watching the series over 20 times. nearly every day for a year
I have watched several videos that analyze film and characters. Many were insightful and many were off by a long shot. This short analysis of Michael Scott is probably the most compelling I've ever watched. Shakespeare wrote that brevity is the soul of wit. I'm sure you could have spent over an hour analyzing, as others have, but you made the perfect point in such a short time. You sir, get it. Bravo and subscribed.
