The voice is slightly on the ware due to natural age, but still the greatest singer in the profession today. She's the only person out there who actually sings and still believes in the art of singing. You can hear she wakes up every morning and relearns every bit of technique that's ever been taught to her. Great artist!!!!

Indeed, she does sound like Callas-- singing music Callas shouldn't have sung (and, as far as I know, didn't). The aria, in her hands, becomes heavy, draggy and solid, the rich voice suitable for Puccini, perhaps (she does a great job of "O mio babbino caro"), but not Handel.
She is very heavy.
i agree. here, she is sounded slightly flat and stodgy. i usually adore her but not so much here.
It's all artful mezza voce, big diva presentation and dirgeful tempo. It reminds me of what a pig's ear singers used to make of Ombra ma fu.

Questo pezzo non mi convince cantato da lei, ma forse è l'audio un po' disturbato.
Saw Beverly Sills sing this and it was magic. Unfortunately, Gheorghiu takes it in a lower key and the voice doesn't sparkle as it should. Callas, if she stayed in the lighter, higher repertory would have done this and other works justice instead of pushing her voice into the heavy rep. finishing her career too soon. In Italy she was known as a leggiero voice; certainly not a spinto or dramatic.
She seems a bit under the pitch......especially the very beginning......

Gran cantante, artista, mucho talento. Solo me hubiese gustado que sea màs natural, mas humilde... Hay mucho ego y esto la harà sufrir cuando pasen màs años y la voz vaya mermando, porque esta es la ley de la naturaleza........
I wonder why is she now "covering" so much. It sounds consistently flat and unable to sing over the already quiet orchestra. Where's the great Montserrat Caballé to show her how to sing quiet, over the orchestra and in tune? Not even Ileana Cotrubas, her purported teacher even covered so much. Sorry to those who love her, I've never been a fan of hers as with the late Renata Tebaldi (because she forced her open register sometime and chock), but when Ms. Tebaldi sang a pianissimo, she relied on pure beautiful resonance which made her quiet renditions sweet and beautiful.
I am a big fan of early Angela´s renditions but I certainly would rate this among her mediocre ones (CZcams has other versions of hers that are better). On the other hand, the aria, though originally composed for a soprano voice (Almirena), sounds better when sung by top mezzo-sopranos, like Joyce Di Donato or Cecilia Bartoli.
DiDonato and Bartoli don't have the rich color of Gheorghiu. I agree that earlier recordings of AG are lovelier. For this aria, go listen to the early Caballé. Much better vowels, style and pitch.

La gente le aplaude, pero ella sabe muy bien que lo que ha hecho es un fraude.
