- In this episode Matt takes a look at a very rare Model 1910 Maxim Silencer, even more rare as it is mounted on a M1903 Springfield.
Developed by Hiram Percy Maxim, son of Hiram S. Maxim, in the early 1900s, the early Maxim suppressors were a commercial success but Maxim also sought military contracts.
The US Army tested the silencers extensively and by the time the US entered World War One in 1917, a substantial number were in inventory. Matt discusses the design, development and history of Maxim's silencer and with the help of new primary research answers the question - was the Maxim silencer used by the US Army during World War One?

Thanks for watching guys! - Matt
1:25 $5 in 1910 is equivalent to in 2018 to $132.86 just to let people have some reference.
Thanks!
That is some incredibly forward thinking, to hear a US military organization of that period talk about the use of silencers to reduce the soldier fatigue in battle.
It amazed me when I first read the original documents, they're so similar to what the USMC is talking about at the moment.
1/3 of the noise...
Bf1: lets make it completely soundless and why not put it on a m1911
They put on on the 1917 Enfield as well apparently!
hmmm...
Imitation is, it's said, one of the sincerest forms of flattery....right?
Haha exactly! A little hat tip.
another excellent video. it really deserves tens of thousands more views.
Thank you for the kind words, really appreciate it! -Matt
Has anyone ever tested these silencer with modern noise meters/microphones to determine how well they suppressed muzzle noise? The Maxim silencer volume appears to be much smaller than high powered (.308, 30-06) rifle silencers made in the 21st century
I got fucking domed with this thing on battlefield like 3 times yesterday
Maxim Silenced M1903 show in 1938 USMC return and a weapons list for the 2nd Raider Battalion in 1942.
That's very interesting Andy, wasn't aware of that. Thanks.
Very interesting. Well done!
Thanks Jeff, glad you enjoyed it.
Very cool vid
Thanks!
In the video game Battlefield 1(which is based on WWI), there is a silenced version of M1911, seems like this version of M1911 does have a Maxim silencer attached. Is this historically accruate? Is Maxim silencer able to be attached to M1911? Did silenced pistols served in WWI? Thank you.
I've seen no evidence to suggest that silenced pistols were used during WW1, WW2 yes definitely but not WW1. Maxim silencers of the period, however, could be fitted to pistols - typically .22 pistols. - Matt
