With the lava lake level rising and the first vent being submerged under the rising lava, is that causing a pressure buildup behind that vent? If so, where is that magma being directed to? What will happen if/when the second vent is covered/submerged by the rising lava lake? Does the lava keep filling the caldera or does it stop and then go horizontal to the side and create new fissures outside the base? Interesting to see how this plays out.

Good question! With only a small number of lava lakes, in the last 50 years, there is very little documented science to make predictions upon. We have seen this one at Kilauea rise and fall in the past. Other lava lakes, at other active volcanoes have actually disappeared over time. The last time Kilauea developed a lava lake, the level went up and down over time as gas pockets escaped from deeper within the magma column. Any breakdown of the caldera or vent due to seismic activity has the potential to divert the venting in a totally different direction.

While there have been spectacular eruptions (the spectacular Kilauea eruption of 1959 was used as footage for many dramatic movies), the threat to human life is minimal with most flows providing plenty of warning, even if property has been destroyed from time to time. =^[.]^=

What's wild to me, is all those old road beds visible right near the caldera. Anyone have sauce for earlier aerial footage?

Are volcanoes connected? Because there’s increasing activity in Martinique and St. Vincent and the Grenadines right now.

No. Volcanoes are not connected. At any given time there are about 20 erupting volcanoes on Earth. Kilauea is no more connected to volcanoes in the Caribbean than to those in Indonesia.

Is this close to Mauna Loa Volcano?

Does this mean that visitors can’t see any molten lava? Just got tickets for the big island (over Maui) specifically for the volcano; leaving in 2 weeks.

This is a classic example of how a news agency takes something small & blasts it out in such a way as to make it seem threatening, as there is a easily accessed live stream that clearly shows the lava lake in question is remaining relatively stable.

I think it was originally a water lake and quickly vapourised and must have changed the property of the larva interacting with the superheated steam - maybe creating a porous cooled crust of petrified gas bubble holes or type of volcanic glass, making it a bouyant lava raft, perhaps. I'm just guessing/speculating but it obviously reacted with the water lake it replaced. I'm assuming the island is shifting on the larva lake, like a raft - if I'm correct. It could simply be a thin crust, cooled by the water it superheated and risen by the larva flowing underneath it.
