Kilauea Eruption Update: Lava Lake Dome Fountain Emerges (Jan. 5, 2021)

  • While no major changes in the summit eruption have been observed, scientists have been documenting the evolution of the active west vent, which continues to feed lava flows into the lake below.
This video contains information on the new dome fountain at the surface of the lava lake, as well how the lake is becoming "perched" in the caldera.
A synthesized voice was utilized in the narration for this story. Video and photos are from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

@@BruceLortzHI The more I listen it, the more I think it isn't entirely artificial. I've listened to a few videos, sometimes I think I hear a subtle huff of air or inhale. Or a slight hiss on s sounds. I wonder if it's spoken by an actual person, but 'auto tuned' into the voice we hear? Or if a actual person speaks and a computer copies what they say mimicking the tones and inflictions? Maybe tech really has advanced that much, our future robot overloads will have soothing and pleasing voices at least.

What's the point of trying to imitate a human voice if you artificially set limits to what your program can imitate? Why wouldn't it inhale? It's like if you had built a self driving car and then wondered why it avoids a pothole; I mean, sure it's not the first thing you need to learn when driving, but it certainly is a part of it.

Thank you so much for posting this! It just appeared in my recommended for you area and I really don't kno why cause I haven't looked at any volcano vids since white island i believe, but anyway, i digress...I had o idea that this was even going on, and oh my word, it looks quite intense man! Well, Happy New Year Hawaii, but so much for 2021 being a lil less freaky deaky than 2020...i mean "come on" as Prez B'd say, right?! Lions and tigers and bears- and viruses and volcanoes- oh my!!! But in all seriousness, now that I kno, I will, without fail, be including this intention, along with so many others, in my daily prayers. I see that the narration was done by a synth voice- but to the real folks behind the channel- be careful out there if you are in fact inhabitants of the island-i guess we should all be careful no matter where or when, but you kno wat i mean ;p and thnks again 4 keepin us informed ...

This is amazing! I watched the 2018 eruption footage as well. In 2010, I was on the Big Island visiting Volcanoe's National Park and did see the crater as it typically is without lava but with smoke and steam vents instead. I was lucky to have been able to see the lava flow into the ocean from a safe distance and walked on brand new 2 month old lava nearby where a new black sand beach had been created from the nearby ocean lava flow. It is amazing to see Mother Earth (and Pele) at work creating new land and growing the island!
