If you are ever in Napa California. Go to Napa state hospital. Many years ago. A patient painted Star Wars images on the walls where the patient’s eat. They are quiet well done.

Great work! But I have to nitpick... Chewbacca was not in the Falcon during the Battle of Endor. It was Lando and Nien Nunb piloting when the Death Star was being attacked. Sorry to criticize, still an amazing job and so much time devoted

This was my first mural so I'm still trying to grasp the ins and outs of working with waal paints and at such a big scale. My techniques are a bit trial and error (mostly error). But making a tutorial is a great idea for sure, for when I get more experience.
I'm itching to paint a Darth Vader! But sadly no such comission has dropped in yet...

hi, how many hours did this take to completion ? I`m guessing you use scumble glaze with acrylics and badger haired brush to get the softening? Stunning work. bravo
Hi Qman,
Thank for dropping by! This was my first mural, so there was a lot of experimentation going on. It took me around 60 hours I think. The softening is quite simple in terms of materials, but has some important application techniques. I used plain water to thin the paint and add a glaze, then go over it with a soft brush (can be badger hair, but any large soft brush will do). Fast light brush strokes is one important element of it. The other is to top at the right time. If you overdo it the brush starts to remove the paint in the middle of the painted areas and leave a nasty outlined blotch instead of a puffy cloud, for example.

I see you use strips of what appear to be thin sticky masking tape. Do you use a scalpel to cut it to form the perfect circle?
Amazed this is your first mural. You are clearly trained. Your technique is first-class! it is all about the greys isnt it. Your midtones are spot on. Do you use a maquette and grid up or always projector? A modern day camera obscura (hey, if it worked for Vermeer!) Really top work. Have inspired me to have a go at my sons room.
I am planning on making a star wars space roof, and i was wondering how y'all made the stars so uniformed yet scattered...

We initially splattered the stars on the wall using a large brush. Just pulling on the bristles and shooting the paint on the wall. The trick is to not have the paint too watered down so as to keep the droplets more consistent. Also keep the shooting angle as perpendicular as possible to the wall to avoid streaks. After that we went in and painted over every star with fluorescent paint to make them glow in the dark.

what kind of paint do you use for murals? do you have to use multi colors of hiouse paint?

I use water soluble interior house paints. I usually go for the purest primary colors I can find (Cyan Magenta Yellow Black) and maybe one or two pre mixed from the catalog when I feel the work has a large area of a certain color (for example a sky or a lake). I mix all the other colors from the primary set as I go along.

I wanted to commission someone to do a mural for me of Star wars but they say they can't do it because of copyright infringement. And I'm very confused because it's for my child's bedroom not in front of business and not making money out of it I don't know

I'm no law expert but I'm pretty sure there would be no legal issue with painting the SW wall in your kid's room. If that was a problem I think there would be no SW fan art anywhere on or offline.
I would paint you that wall myself, but I'm in Portugal :D

Pintei ao longo de 4 semanas. Foi a primeira vez que pintei um mural e andei um bocado aos papéis a ver o que funcionava :)
Contudo funciona tudo. Lembro-me bem quando jogávamos ADD. Bastava um pedaço de papel e não era só a qualidade do desenho que me surpreendia como os pormenores que surgiam da tua imaginação... Continua sempre por esse caminho!!!
