Star Wars Death Star Wall Panels for Bedroom, Office or Apartment DIY with LED Light Panels - Part 1

  • The Finished wall (part 2) is here: • Part 2 - Star Wars Dea...
    My friend and I recently built Death Star wall panels for my bedroom. Complete with remote LED color changing light panels. Consider this a sorta DIY how to build these panels that can be hung rather than installed on any wall.
    I found a bunch of Death Star Plans for walls similar to this online, but they all seemed to have one thing in common: For Display Purposes Only. I needed a wall that could withstand some extreme forces pushing on it if need be. After all, the initial intention is to become a headboard. This is a perfect modular wall that can be split into four different panels for different purposes. Great if you rent a home or apartment that you can not permanently install in. It's temporary wall art.
    This movie themed and scifi inspired Star Wars do it yourself DIY build is a fan based effort and is not intended to infringe on any copyright material and is not used for any commercial gain.

    Thanks so much for this video!!! I've been wanting to make similar panels for over a year, but have been a bit intimidated. Now that I've seen your approach, I believe I can do it. Could you share the general specs and source for the lighting?

    • @JamminJedi
      @JamminJedi  Před 4 lety +2

      The LEDs are standard 12v 5050s (10mm) ran in parallel from 2x6-way splitters in each panel (top and bottom half each got their own splitter) Turns out series doesn't generate enough juice out of the little stock controller unit (not the remote) to keep the last bulb on the line as bright as the first. Cutting them up into strips and going into splitters from the power source seemed to help this. I bought the lights off amazon - search: Daybetter 600leds 32.8ft 10m Waterproof Flexible Color Changing RGB SMD 5050. They come in 2 strips per power supply and control unit but I had to use just under 3 strips per wall section so I had to get 3 boxes. I'm running just over 2.5 strips per stock unit and have NO issues. Other little connectors and wires are standard 4 pin 5050 LED connecting kits. Hot glue holds them to the other side of the plexi-glass and they reflect VERY evenly off the white back of the box. (Lord knows I didn't want to see any actual source of lighting coming through there as it would ruin the effect) Hope that helps!

    • @JamminJedi
      @JamminJedi  Před 4 lety

      Semi-Gloss mix of pure white and satin black. I know it looks like I'm starting with a base grey but that's only because I had to restart the recording and I already mixed a little in. It turns out Sherwin Williams or any other paint store doesn't know what medium/50% grey is... everything anyone offered had a slight tint to it so I went my own route and mixed to the eye. Then added just a little dose of metallic accent. I may have gone full flat if the original purpose wasn't a headboard that would see some wear from rubbing against.

      @@JamminJedi jmmm... Alright, si first the 50/50 mix of white and black, and after that has dried a thin layer with the metallic rustoleum applied with a sponge, am i right?, By the way the black and white is satin or matte?

    • @JamminJedi
      @JamminJedi  Před 3 lety

      @@DanielCastillo911 I used a satin black in my 50/50 mix. I also mixed in a bunch of sterling silver metallic accent directly into the main mix before painting so it would have a metallic pearl to it. The sponge you see towards the end is a weathering technique where I am applying an additional silver accent to just the edges of some of the boards to give their corners a more defined shine. Keep in mind, I just made it up as I went along. Just start mixing the paint and apply a little every now and then to see how it dries. If you don't like it, keep mixing until you do.
      Good luck! I would love to see your finished build!

    • @JamminJedi
      @JamminJedi  Před 4 lety

      Hard to say on time because we didn't keep track. Maybe 100+ hours times 2 people. I kept much better track of the cost which was about $1,300 total.

    • @JamminJedi
      @JamminJedi  Před 5 lety +4

      Thank you! Optix clear acrylic sheet .08 thickness 32x44 inches cut down to size in the store (Lowes) and covered in privacy window film (frost) because it was cheaper than the actual frost glass. Stuck to wood with e6000 glue.

      Part of the fun was making my templates from scratch. When you watch the movie, you'll notice that many of the death star sets differ from one another making it impossible to decipher the perfect blueprint. I just came up with a size that would fit the office it ended up in. There is a part 2 of this if that helps: czcams.com/video/EDtQVr-Q2D8/video.html
